Decoding "Occupation" in Occupational Therapy ๐Ÿ”

In the realm of Occupational Therapy, the term "occupation" transcends the conventional idea of a job. It encompasses the diverse activities and roles that shape one's daily life, contributing to overall health and well-being. Here's a glimpse into the profound definition of "occupation" in OT:

๐ŸŒˆ Beyond Employment: Occupation refers to the meaningful activities individuals engage in daily.

๐Ÿค Personalized and Purposeful: Occupational therapists recognize that everyone's daily occupations are unique. Whether it's a child learning to tie their shoes or an adult reentering the workforce after an injury, interventions are tailored to each person's specific needs and goals.

๐Ÿ’ก Enhancing Quality of Life: Engaging in purposeful occupations contributes to a person's sense of identity, accomplishment, and connection.

๐Ÿ  Incorporating the Environment: Occupational therapists consider the influence of environments on one's ability to engage in occupations.

๐Ÿš€ Empowering Through Occupation: Occupational Therapy is about empowering individuals to lead fulfilling lives by facilitating their engagement in meaningful occupations. I

The heart of OT lies in the belief that meaningful occupations contribute not only to physical well-being but also to emotional, social, and cognitive health. Join us on the journey of embracing the fullness of life through purposeful engagement! ๐Ÿ‘‰ www.buildingblockscentre.co.za

Activity of the day ๐ŸŒฑ ๐Ÿ™Œ

Flying fish diving game is a fun game to enhance and encourage fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and problem-solving skills. The challenge of this game is to take turns successfully launching a fish from the diving springboard and landing it in the corresponding coloured hole.

Don't flip it too far, as these fish can go flying. Be the first person to get all your fish in a hole, and you'll win the game. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Activity of the day ๐ŸŒฑ

The therapeutic benefits of sensory bins are endless, but here are a few to get started. ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ‘ƒSensory Exploration: Sensory bins stimulate a variety of senses at the same time, such as touch, sight, sound, and smell. Dry textures, such as dry rice, feathers, bird seed, and pom-poms, or wet textures, such as water, cooked pasta, shaving foam, pudding, jelly, etc., can be used.

โœ๏ธFine Motor Skills and hand Strength: Children can work on their fine motor skills through scooping, grasping, stirring, and pouring with various tools. These tools may include plastic spades, spoons, tweezers, tongs, funnels, measuring cups, etc. These encourage tool use and help develop grasp patterns your child needs for activities such as handwriting and using feeding utensils. This can also increase hand strength, coordination, bilateral coordination, and in-hand manipulation.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Social & Play Skills: Sensory bins offer an excellent opportunity for cooperative play and the development of social skills. Children can learn how to share and take turns, the value of teamwork and cooperation, and how to communicate with others. Calming Activity Sensory bins can provide a quiet activity to help children calm down and play independently. For children who become overstimulated or overly excited by sensory input, a repetitive, fine motor activity can sometimes help them regulate and calm themselves. Having a child pick up small objects one at a time and place them in a small opening or container is a great way to do this.

Tips to reduce sensory meltdowns during the holidays โœจ ๐ŸŒฑ

1. Use a sensory Calm Down Bag: Include items that help soothe your child when they are overwhelmed. Some examples of items you can bring along just in case may include noise-cancelling headphones, a weighted vest or lap pad, a squishy/fidget toy, a chewy tube, a device with calming music loaded on it, or even a pouch that has been infused with essential oils.

2. Leave room for quiet: Give your child the option of going to a quieter space during any gatherings where they can be calm and peaceful, away from the bustle of the event. Talk to your child beforehand and let them know that if they start to feel anxious or get overwhelmed by noise, sight, smell, etc., they can go to this space to regulate or relax. Keep an eye out for signs of sensory overload, and also take them to this space if they seem to be escalating. It will take them out of the stressful situation and hopefully provide a safe and calming environment while still allowing your family to participate in the holiday festivities.

3. Plan ahead and Stick to Routine: Take time before going out to talk about some of the sensory challenges (loud noise, bright lights, having to sit still, etc.) that may be present, and brainstorm coping strategies together. Sticking to a routine can help reduce sensory overload by providing a familiar and predictable environment. When a child knows what to expect, they are less likely to be caught off guard by unexpected sensory input.

4. Pre-activity preparation: Find out as much as you can about any activity you choose to participate in to prepare your child ahead of time. For example, read about the activity, find photos and watch any video clips available online. Drive by new places a few days before where possible so that it is not a brand new place to visit.

Enjoy the holiday season to its fullest! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Activity of the day ๐ŸŽˆ ๐ŸŒฑ

Balloon is the name and keeping it in the air is the game ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ™Œ

Reaching up to hit the balloon works on arm strength and upper extremity range of motion as well as on the movements for trunk and shoulder stability. When playing the game while standing, you can work on standing balance, weight shifting, and lower extremity strength.

Here are a few other balloon games to try yourself at home during the holidays ๐Ÿ‘‡

Play Keep It Up: It is a fun game that is great at working on hand-eye coordination too. Throw a balloon into the air and run around try to keep it from touching the ground.

Blow the balloon: Create a simple obstacle course (e.g., under a chair or around a pillow) and get your child to crawl on their hands and knees and blow the balloon through the obstacle course.

Run with a string. This game combines the keep it up and ceiling balloon games. Attach a balloon to a long piece of string and have your child run, holding the string while keeping the balloon off the ground.

Sticky Balloons: Using static electricity, challenge kids to rub a balloon on their clothes and see if it will stick to it. Time how long the balloon sticks or how many balloons a child can get to stick simultaneously.

These are great games to involve the whole family while working on core muscular and developmental focal points. ๐Ÿ™Œ Let the fun begin!
