1.Sunlight can worsen acne by increasing oil production and causing a buildup of skin cells, which can clog pores, UVB has also been shown it to increase inflammation.

Acne treatments, especially isotretinoin and tetracyclines, can make skin more sensitive to the sun, requiring extra protection.

3. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): Sun exposure can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, especially in individuals with skin of color. Sunscreen helps prevent the darkening of acne marks and maintains an even skin tone

"Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a common type of skin cancer that forms in the squamous cells of the skin, often due to prolonged exposure to UV radiation. Risk factors include excessive sun exposure, having fair skin, being over 50, and weakened immunity. Wearing sunscreen is crucial as it helps protect the skin from harmful UV rays, reducing the risk of SCC and other skin damages."

Biotin: Myths vs. Reality

Biotin or vitamin B7, often hailed as a miracle supplement for hair and nails, carries some important disclaimers that are often overlooked.
1. Biotin Supplementation Hype:
* Many turn to biotin for its purported benefits on hair and nails, expecting miraculous results. However, it's effect is limited.
2. Rare Biotin Deficiency:
* Contrary to common belief, biotin deficiency is rare in healthy individuals, making supplementation unnecessary for most. Very rarely seen in pregnancy, smokers and people on anticonvulsants
3. Lack of Robust Evidence:
* Despite its widespread use, there's a scarcity of large-scale studies supporting biotin's efficacy for hair and nail health.
4. Potential Interference with Blood Tests:
* One crucial concern is biotin's interference with blood tests, including thyroid and cardiac markers, leading to inaccurate results.
5. Risk of Misdiagnosis:
* This interference could potentially result in misdiagnosis of serious health conditions, highlighting the importance of caution when using biotin supplements.

To repair your skin barrier.

* Use a Gentle Cleanser: Start with a mild, gentle cleanser preferably in the evening.

* Look for Key Ingredients: Opt for products containing ceramides, fatty acids(linoleic acid), cholesterol, and squalane, which mimic the natural lipids in the skin and help reinforce its barrier. (fill the gaps between the skin cells)

* Include Humectants: Ingredients like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and urea draw moisture into the skin, which is essential for hydration and barrier repair.

* Use Occlusives for Severe Dryness: For very dry skin, occlusives like petrolatum or lanolin can be crucial as they prevent water loss and protect damaged skin. Remember if you an impaired barrier but is acne prone, avoid petroleum and zinc oxide as it can cause more breakouts.

* Apply on Damp Skin: Moisturizers are most effective when applied to damp skin as this helps lock in moisture.

* Apply Twice Daily: Moisturizing in the morning helps protect the skin throughout the day, while evening application aids in repair during sleep.

* Be Gentle: Avoid rubbing or pulling the skin; instead, gently pat the moisturizer in.

Address Underlying Issues

* Identify Triggers: Consider what might be harming your skin barrier, such as over-exfoliating, harsh skincare ingredients, or environmental factors.
* Adjust Your Routine: Simplify your skincare routine, cutting out unnecessary or irritating products.

Monitor Skin's Response
* Be Patient: Repairing the skin barrier can take time, and improvements may be gradual.
* Adjust As Needed: If you notice continued dryness, irritation, or other symptoms, you might need to switch to more intensive formulations or consult a dermatologist.

I often recommend azelaic acid for treating acne, perioral dermatitis, hyperpigmentation and rosacea. It's known for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which can help to reduce redness, inflammation, and breakouts. Additionally, it can also help with hyperpigmentation and improving overall skin texture.

The two-finger rule for applying tinted sunscreen is a good guideline to ensure you're applying enough to get adequate sun protection. For hyperpigmentation, look for sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (the tint in tinted sunscreen), which provide broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays and mostly importantantly visible light (the light the eye can see)
