This February, we highlight Physiotherapy as a core therapeutic discipline within the sub-acute rehabilitation programme at Oasis Care Centre.

The physiotherapy team at Oasis delivers structured, evidence-based sub-acute rehabilitation. Each programme is guided by clinical reasoning and functional goals, ensuring patients are safe for discharge, equipped with appropriate assistive devices, and confident in managing daily life as independently as possible.

Physiotherapy at Oasis is about turning recovery into function, confidence, and readiness for life beyond the Care Centre.

This February, we highlight Physiotherapy as a core therapeutic discipline within the sub-acute rehabilitation programme at Oasis Care Centre.

Bidding Sr Robertson a fond farewell after 11 years of blessing the Oasis Physical Rehab patients and team with her vast experience, guidance, and knowledge.

Throughout her 44 years of nursing, Sr Mary Robertson always conducted herself with the conviction of “The patient first”. During her employment, she was also passionate about upholding the company’s reputation by sharing the same value system.

Go well, Sr Robertson – you will be missed and spoken about for many years to come.

The Primary Health Care Team stepping out to be at the Oasis Apartment Residents’ side …and always keeping a friendly eye out for them

As we approach the end of the year, we can’t but agree with Dr Seuss when he said: "How did it get so late so soon? It's night before it's afternoon. December is here before it's June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?"

When looking back as the Oasis Care Centre and Primary Health team we think of all the residents and patients that have come across our path throughout the year. It is undeniable that that none of these individuals leaves us unaffected. We always aim to remain professional, but we are human after all. We walk the road with those who despair, who are at their most vulnerable and who stand at the door to eternity. Sharing these experiences are often imprinted in us and leaves us in contemplation for a long time to come. What an honour to be trusted to provide guidance and ensure dignity and peace in such life altering times.

The same is true when we see residents and patients overcome major challenges. It is said that shared joy is double joy and we are privileged enough to experience just that. When a patient who has suffered a stroke take their first steps again it reverberates throughout the Care Centre.

The Oasis Care Centre and Primary Health Care team would like to give thanks to all of you for allowing us into your homes and lives. Thank you for the support and kindness showed – being part of the Oasis Community is an honour and blessing which we are tremendously grateful for.

Monthly Focus at Oasis Care Centre | Occupational Therapy

This December, we are shining a light on one of the Care Centre’s vital therapeutic disciplines — Occupational Therapy.

Meet Kyla & Renandi, supporting recovery through Occupational Therapy

Renandi Uys
Renandi completed her Occupational Therapy degree at Stellenbosch University and her community service year in KZN. She is passionate about helping others and enjoys reading, sewing, and spending time with her loved ones.

Renandi enjoys being part of a strong multidisciplinary team (MDT) at Oasis. Collaborating closely with different professions not only supports better outcomes for our patients but also makes each day more rewarding as we learn from each other and work together.

Kyla Dirks
Kyla graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2023 and completed her community service year in the Eastern Cape. She is passionate about neurological rehabilitation and is dedicated to helping others through meaningful, patient-centred therapy.

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her loved ones, being outdoors, and staying active. What Kyla values most about working at Oasis is supporting patients and their families during a pivotal stage of recovery. Many patients arrive after long hospital stays, and Oasis becomes their final step before returning home. It’s meaningful to help ensure they are safe for discharge, equipped with the right assistive devices, and confident in their ability to manage daily life as independently as possible.

Monthly Focus at Oasis Care Centre | Speech Therapy

This month, we are shining a light on one of the Care Centre’s vital therapeutic disciplines — Speech Therapy.

Meet Naqeeba Pharos, our lovely Speech Therapist who supports short term patients and long term residents with a range of needs related to speech, swallowing, and communication. This includes individuals recovering from a stroke, as well as those diagnosed with Dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and other health challenges that may affect their speech and swallowing abilities.

As Naqeeba explains, “We exercise our arm and leg muscles regularly, but did you know that our facial muscles are just as important? These muscles help us communicate clearly with friends and family. Through facial strengthening exercises and oral motor exercises — targeting the tongue, cheek, and lips — we can support clearer, more confident communication.”

We are proud to offer patients and residents access to specialised care that enhances their quality of life, confidence, and connection.

The 1st of October was “International Older Persons’ Day”.

With an ageing population, it becomes imperative to adjust to the increasing number of elderly individuals who possess a wide range of functional capacities. The ability to carry out essential functions and partake in daily activities is influenced not only by an individual’s inherent capacity but also by the social and physical environment in which they reside.

The Oasis Retirement Resort and the Oasis Care Centre have mastered the ability to provide a supportive platform not only to allow but to encourage older individuals to maintain their activity levels and independence as they progress in age.

This supportive environment aligns with the concept of the “Generation of Healthy Ageing,” which is part of the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030). The key focus of this initiative is to foster age-friendly environments, combat ageism, deliver integrated care, and provide access to long-term care, all of which enable older persons to maintain their functional abilities, well-being, and make a positive contribution to their communities.

Dr Jane Goodall, the famed primatologist, anthropologist, and conservationist, passed away on International Older Persons' Day at the age of 91 from natural causes. Her message throughout all the decades has been the same. Every day that you are on this earth, you make an impact, and it is your choice what that impact will be. Not all of us can be an international legend like Jane Goodall, but be sure to be a legend to your family, friends, and even the strangers you come across in your daily life. Choose positivity, choose movement, choose life. You are writing your own eulogy; let it be one to remember for all the good reasons.
