Monthly Focus at Oasis Care Centre | Speech Therapy

This month, we are shining a light on one of the Care Centre’s vital therapeutic disciplines — Speech Therapy.

Meet Naqeeba Pharos, our lovely Speech Therapist who supports short term patients and long term residents with a range of needs related to speech, swallowing, and communication. This includes individuals recovering from a stroke, as well as those diagnosed with Dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and other health challenges that may affect their speech and swallowing abilities.

As Naqeeba explains, “We exercise our arm and leg muscles regularly, but did you know that our facial muscles are just as important? These muscles help us communicate clearly with friends and family. Through facial strengthening exercises and oral motor exercises — targeting the tongue, cheek, and lips — we can support clearer, more confident communication.”

We are proud to offer patients and residents access to specialised care that enhances their quality of life, confidence, and connection.

The 1st of October was “International Older Persons’ Day”.

With an ageing population, it becomes imperative to adjust to the increasing number of elderly individuals who possess a wide range of functional capacities. The ability to carry out essential functions and partake in daily activities is influenced not only by an individual’s inherent capacity but also by the social and physical environment in which they reside.

The Oasis Retirement Resort and the Oasis Care Centre have mastered the ability to provide a supportive platform not only to allow but to encourage older individuals to maintain their activity levels and independence as they progress in age.

This supportive environment aligns with the concept of the “Generation of Healthy Ageing,” which is part of the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030). The key focus of this initiative is to foster age-friendly environments, combat ageism, deliver integrated care, and provide access to long-term care, all of which enable older persons to maintain their functional abilities, well-being, and make a positive contribution to their communities.

Dr Jane Goodall, the famed primatologist, anthropologist, and conservationist, passed away on International Older Persons' Day at the age of 91 from natural causes. Her message throughout all the decades has been the same. Every day that you are on this earth, you make an impact, and it is your choice what that impact will be. Not all of us can be an international legend like Jane Goodall, but be sure to be a legend to your family, friends, and even the strangers you come across in your daily life. Choose positivity, choose movement, choose life. You are writing your own eulogy; let it be one to remember for all the good reasons.

Oasis Care Centre, Century City - where we live, love and laugh!

Michael Rakaba, a police officer from the Northern Cape, was admitted to Oasis Care Centre after a motor vehicle accident left him partially paralysed. Michael quickly won everyone’s hearts and became a cherished part of the Oasis Rehab family.

We had the privilege of inviting his elderly mother to visit him, and after a long bus journey, the two were reunited in an emotional and joyful moment.

Michael has made remarkable progress in his recovery, and there is every reason to hope for continued improvement. His physiotherapist, Zara, shared this heartfelt message about her much-loved patient:

“Michael, I wish you the best for your future endeavours. I know that because you are so motivated and take charge of your life, things will go your way. I really admire your patience and calmness, and I will always remember you that way.” — Zara

At Oasis Care Centre, we have the mutual honour and privilege of partnering with the Occupational Therapy Department at Stellenbosch University who entrusts us with the learning and development of their future Occupational Therapists.

As much as the students have the opportunity to grow their clinical and professional skills during their placements at Oasis Care Centre, our residents’ lives are equally enriched by their enthusiastic contributions to the therapeutic programmes. They touch all of our lives, and we are so thankful for them!

A little patience, a lot of love, and a heart full of gratitude go a long way!
