This post is dedicated to Toyota Manufacturing and Management –

It is not often that one can say thank you and give credit to someone or a company due to standards and quality being so poor in many sectors. But as someone who specializes in creating safe environments for employees and knows what it is about really want to say thank you to Toyota SA for providing a vehicle that could stand the test of time.

On 5 January 2024, at approximately 3:22pm my wife, youngest daughter (6), and grandchild (4) was involved in a near fatal vehicle accident. The 2020 Toyota Fortuner collided head on with a detached double axel trailer. The Fortuner was travelling approximately 100km/h and the oncoming trailer approximately the same speed. My wife had to be rescued with the “jaws of life” and thereafter airlifted to hospital. My 6yr old was hospitalized overnight and my grandchild escaped without a scratch. Yes, was it a head on with a truck, or a head on with another Fortuner, or whatever scenario you want to create things might have been different, or not. The fact is that my family is alive, not only because of angels watching over them, but also because of the vehicle they were driving.

If it had to be any other vehicle I would be standing next to their graves. Therefore, relating to this specific accident, I want to say thank you from our hearts to Toyota SA for providing us with another chance as a family to be together. May you continue to develop safe and secure vehicles to your clients.

Regards

Keith Grassie and Family.

Home Safety Part 1:

We often find ourselves so tied up in red tape in the work environment regarding health and safety that we often forget about our health and safety responsibilities at home. Below are a couple of reminders for you to think about when going back home after work:
1. Swimming pools – are they covered or fenced in?
2. Electrical Fencing – does your kids have direct access to the wiring?
3. Electrical points – are they covered to prevent toddlers / babies from pushing their fingers into the holes?
4. Fire – where do you store your hazardous/flammable chemicals?
5. Fire Emergency – what is your protocol? Does your family understand what to do in the event of a fire? Are your emergency contact numbers displayed in the house?
6. Fire Control – Do you have a fire extinguisher at hand in the event of a fire and does your family understand how and when to use it? P.S. NEVER USE WATER ON AN ELECTRICAL FIRE!
7. Gas Heaters – Is your family informed of the risks using gas? Remember to always keep a window open for ventilation.
8. Glass – Windows below approximately 900mm (refer to SANS 10400) must be safety glass. Ensure that coffee tables are also made from safety glass to ensure that safety of children should it break.
We hope to discuss the above in a bit more detail and to share not only knowledge but experience too with all homeowners. May you benefit from the above and enjoy a safe home environment.

Feel free to contact KGC Health and Safety for any advice or pointers for your home environment. We look forward to being of assistance.

Evacuation Plans:

The Employer has been instructed to provide their employees with a safe working environment. (Section 8 of the OHS Act). Every employer should therefore be familiar with the fire risks in their building, what to do in the event of a fire, and how to evacuate the building safely so that no employee may come to harm during such an emergency. It is never a case of “it won’t happen to us”. It is more of a case of “when it happens” and “are we prepared”. What is your fire risk in your workplace? Who are your role players during such a situation? Has an assessment been conducted to assess your fire risk and to provide practical solutions to mitigate that risk?

Feel free to contact KGC Health and Safety for assistance in conducting a fire risk assessment as well as the development of an Emergency Evacuation Plan for your company. We look forward to being of assistance.

Working at heights:

This is always a hot topic for discussion because of so many different opinions and views. The one thing that can be agreed on is that it is always a high-risk activity and if not respected the results never favor the receiver, and even less so the Employer. Since the start of the year 2023 KGC Health and Safety has been involved with numerous investigations involving Lost Time Injuries because of falls from height. We are also aware of at least one fatality. No one can guarantee that an accident will never happen, but what we as KGC Health and Safety can do is to assist you as the Client to ensure that the correct procedures and training is in place. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure.

Feel free to contact KGC Health and Safety for guidance and professional advice on how to be prepared for situations like the above. We look forward to being of assistance.

Topic : Health and Safety Officers/Managers/Agents

Dear Clients. Many of you are led to believe that the appointment of any Health and Safety Professional in the construction industry does not necessarily require such a person to be registered. Please note that this is both untrue and illegal. We encourage you to make the right decision and to appoint a health and safety professional who is registered with the SACPCMP and in good standing. The repercussions of non-compliance may result in work stoppages or worse, enforced by the Department of Employment and Labour when notified of such cases.

Feel free to contact KGC Health and Safety for guidance and professional advice in line with our country’s Legislation. We look forward to being of assistance.

We reflect back to April 2022 when KGC Health and Safety hosted a bowls fund raiser. The idea was to create marketing opportunities for our participating clients and a fun day for supporting friends and interested persons and to raise funds which would then be donated to a children’s charity organisation of choice. We thank everyone involved including Bellville Bowls Club for their efforts and support in making this event happen. We look forward to hosting many more events in the near future.
Huis van Heerde was the chosen organization in Morreesburg who benefitted from the fundraiser. It was a privilege to be part of this occasion to make a difference in a few youngster’s lives. We encourage all our clients, followers, and any one with the potential to donate, to do so. Every little contribution will make a difference.
