Tummy aches, hard or infrequent stools, “withholding” (crossed legs, tiptoes), or skid marks in the pants can all point to constipation. The good news: small daily habits help a lot.

Try this: offer water regularly; add fibre (fruit, veg, whole grains, beans); build movement into the day; sit on the loo for 5–10 minutes after meals; use a footstool so knees are above hips; encourage calm breathing or “blowing bubbles” to relax; praise effort—not results.

Avoid: shaming, frequent stool-holding, and stopping medicines too soon. Laxatives can be very helpful, but it’s best to use them under medical guidance.

See Dr Vahed urgently if there’s severe or persistent pain, blood in the stool, vomiting, weight loss, fever, constipation in a baby under 6 months, ongoing soiling with distress, or if you’re worried. Contact us here:

Babies are born with more bones than adults. At birth, most little ones have around two hundred and seventy bones. Many of these are soft pieces of cartilage that gradually fuse as they grow, leaving the two hundred and six bones of adulthood.

This flexible design helps during birth, protects growing brains, and allows tiny bodies to adapt as they learn to roll, crawl and walk. You might notice the “soft spots” on your baby’s head (fontanelles). They usually close in the first two years.

Here are 5 quick clues for parents deciphering between a cold and allergies:

Itch factor: Itchy eyes/nose + sneezing fits → more likely allergy.
Fever: Rare with allergy; common with a cold (especially day 1–3).
Timing: Allergies often linger or flare after triggers (pollen, pets, dust); colds usually clear in 7–10 days.
Eyes & nose: Allergies = watery/itchy eyes, clear drip; colds can turn thicker over a few days.
Pattern: Same symptoms every spring or around pets? Think allergy.
Care at home: fluids, rest, saline sprays, and gentle skin care around the nose. Speak to your paediatrician before starting medicines.

See a doctor urgently if: breathing is hard/fast or wheezy, there’s a high fever that lasts >3 days, ear or facial pain, your child seems very unwell, or any fever in a baby under 3 months (≥38°C).

Today, the 14th of September, is national ADHD day in South Africa. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental difference—not a character flaw.

Signs can include inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity, yet many children also show strengths like creativity, curiosity and powerful focus on what they love. If schoolwork, organisation or friendships are a struggle, an assessment can clarify the picture and open the door to practical support: routines, movement breaks, sleep hygiene and teacher collaboration.

International Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Day (FASD)

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (including FAS) are lifelong conditions caused by alcohol exposure during pregnancy, affecting growth, brain development, learning and behaviour. The most important fact is simple: there is no safe amount, no safe time, and no safe type of alcohol in pregnancy. Partners, families and friends can help by supporting alcohol-free choices and creating alcohol-free spaces.

If you’re worried about a baby or child—signs may include feeding difficulties, poor sleep, delays, or attention and learning challenges—early assessment and support make a real difference.

Teething can turn the smiliest baby into a little chew machine 🧸✨

Common signs: dribbling, rosy cheeks, gum-rubbing, mild fussiness.

Not teething: high fever, diarrhoea or a widespread rash—those need a check.

Soothe safely:
• Offer a clean, chilled (not frozen) teether
• Gentle gum massage with a clean finger
• Extra cuddles and fluids
• Wipe dribble to protect the skin
• Speak to your paediatrician before using any pain medicine

Avoid: benzocaine/lidocaine gels, amber necklaces, sugary rusks.

Book or seek urgent care if: temperature ≥38 °C (especially under 3 months), poor feeding, signs of dehydration (fewer wet nappies), persistent ear-pulling with fever, or if you’re worried.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️

Childhood cancers are rare, but early recognition matters. Please speak to a paediatrician if you notice persistent symptoms such as: unexplained fever or weight loss; unusual bruising or bleeding; constant tiredness or pallor; headaches with early-morning vomiting; ongoing bone or joint pain; a lump or swelling that doesn’t go away; changes in vision or balance. Trust your instincts—if something feels “not right”, get it checked. Timely assessment can lead to faster diagnosis and support for your child and family.

You're not the only one asking this — and yes, it's common! Many toddlers still experience night wakings, even after age 1.

It could be due to:
👶Growth spurts
👶Teething
👶Separation anxiety
👶Changes in routine

Good sleep is possible with gentle guidance and support.

If night waking is affecting your child’s mood (or yours), it might be time to chat.

Schedule a visit with Dr Vahed to get personalised, reassuring advice.

Because rested kids = rested parents. 💚
