It was a truly special morning spent sharing motherhood journeys, offering advice for expectant mothers and supporting one another. 🌿

A space to talk honestly about parenthood, ask questions, and connect with others walking the same journey.

Just a little reminder that tomorrow morning we gather again at Kenilworth Centre— a safe space to breathe, share, learn, and feel held in the beautiful chaos of parenthood.

Gender-based violence breaks families, silences voices, and steals childhoods.

As a paediatrician, I stand firmly with survivors and advocate for a future where every child grows up in a home filled with safety, dignity and respect.

Let’s teach our little ones what healthy love looks like.

Understanding Heart Problems in Babies ❤️

Some babies are born with heart conditions that affect how their hearts function. These can include:

🔹 Heart murmurs – extra sounds made by blood flow in the heart.
🔹 Holes in the heart – small openings between chambers that may or may not need treatment.
🔹 Valve issues – where the heart’s valves do not close properly.

While this may sound overwhelming, many heart conditions in babies are detected early and can be managed with careful monitoring, medication, or surgery if needed.

Advances in paediatric care mean that most children with heart problems go on to live healthy, active lives.

If you notice your baby struggling with feeding, breathing quickly, sweating a lot, or not gaining weight as expected, it is important to seek medical advice.

Every child’s heart is unique, and with the right care, they can thrive. 💙

Keeping Children Safe in Sport 🏃‍♂️

Sport is a wonderful way for children to stay active, build confidence, and make friends. However, injuries can still occur — and many are preventable with the right precautions.

Here are a few safety tips every parent can keep in mind:

✔️ Make sure your child warms up and stretches before play
✔️ Encourage them to wear the right protective gear (helmets, pads, mouthguards)
✔️ Ensure they stay hydrated, especially in hot weather
✔️ Remind them to listen to their bodies — pain should not be ignored
✔️ Teach the importance of fair play and rest between games

If your child experiences persistent pain, swelling, or difficulty moving after an injury, seek medical care rather than waiting it out. ⚡

Healthy habits today keep children active, confident, and safe tomorrow. 💙

Crawling is such an exciting stage in your little one’s development — and every baby gets there in their own time. Some start as early as 6 months, others closer to 10 months, and some even skip crawling altogether and move straight to walking!

💭 We would love to hear from you: At what age did your little one start crawling? Share your experience in the comments below. 👇

Caring for Your Baby’s Umbilical Cord 🍼

In the first few weeks, your baby’s umbilical cord stump needs gentle care as it naturally dries and falls off. Here are some tips to keep it clean and healthy:

✨ Keep the area dry – fold nappies down to avoid covering the stump.
✨ Clean gently with plain water if needed; pat dry.
✨ Avoid covering it with creams, powders, or alcohol unless advised.
✨ Let the stump fall off on its own (usually within 1–2 weeks).

Contact Dr Anisa Vahed if you notice redness, swelling, pus, bleeding that does not stop, or a foul smell. 🚨

Every baby’s healing is different. If you are ever uncertain, it is always safe to ask.

National Children’s Day 🌍💙

Today, we celebrate the joy, potential, and rights of every child. Children deserve to grow up safe, healthy, and loved, with opportunities to learn, play, and thrive.

As a paediatrician, Dr Vahed is reminded daily of the resilience and wonder that children bring into our lives.

National Children’s Day is also a time to reflect on the role we all play in protecting and nurturing the next generation.

Let us continue to work together to create a world where every child feels valued and cared for. 💙👶
