Abalimi Bezekhaya Abalimi Bezekhaya teaches home and community gardens to grow vegetables organically in the townships

Abalimi Bezekhaya (meaning farmers of the home in isiXhosa) is a non-profit urban-farming organization, established in 1982, that supports individuals and groups from disadvantaged communities in Cape Town through providing facilitation and training on organic food production for nutrition, health, food security and income generation. Abalimi provides the following support services, which are our five main pillars of development:

1) Training and mentoring, as well as professional extension services (e.g. organisation building, research, soil testing, monitoring and evaluation, management and accounting services).

2) Supply of agricultural inputs for production (e.g. manure, seeds and seedlings) via our garden centres.

3) Soil and infrastructure capital input, which the farmers cannot build up on their own. This includes the major part of their manure to improve soil infrastructure within the harsh dune sand environment and extreme weather conditions and irrigation infrastructure.

4) Support in market access to allow farmers to sell their produce for income generation.

5) Enable farmers to develop their organisations and negotiate all manner of social dynamics.

Every week, we bring you a fresh selection of organic seedlings โ€” carefully grown, naturally nurtured, and full of life. ๐ŸŒฑ

Our seedlings come straight from trusted organic growers who believe that healthy soil is the foundation of healthy food. No chemicals, no shortcuts โ€” just pure, sustainable growth from seed to sprout.

Starting your garden with organic seedlings means giving your plants the best possible beginning: stronger roots, better resistance, and vegetables that are as nutrient-rich as they are delicious. ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿฅ•๐ŸŒฝ

๐ŸŒฟ This week, Abalimi Bezekhaya hosted a three-day Basic Urban Agriculture Training โ€” and what an inspiring few days it was! ๐Ÿ™Œ

More than 20 enthusiastic participants came together to learn the fundamentals of organic farming and urban gardening โ€” from planting seeds and preparing soil to understanding how to grow healthy, sustainable food even in challenging urban conditions. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’ง

The training combined theory and hands-on practice: after learning about different cultivation methods and soil management in the classroom, participants got the chance to apply their new knowledge directly in the garden. ๐ŸŒพ

Weโ€™re proud to see so many community members taking steps toward greener cities, stronger local food systems, and a more sustainable future! ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒ

Today, on we celebrate the hands that feed the world ๐ŸŒ

At Abalimi Bezekhaya, we believe food security starts in every garden, every seed, and every shared harvest.
Together, we can grow food. Grow people. Grow the future. ๐ŸŒพ
Every seed we plant brings us closer to a world where everyone has enough. ๐ŸŒฟ

Sometimes, the most powerful reminder is simply this:
๐ŸŒฟ Nature doesnโ€™t rush, yet everything gets done.
๐ŸŒž Take a breath. ๐Ÿƒ Feel the wind. ๐ŸŒ… Watch the light change.
That, too, is enough. โœจ

Happy Women's Day ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒธ
At Abalimi, women are not just part of the work โ€“ they are the heart of it.

Most of the people who keep this organisation going day by day are strong, dedicated women. Their commitment, care, and leadership are what make Abalimi run smoothly and meaningfully.

A very special shout-out to these four amazing individuals โ€“ without your strength, passion, and perseverance, we truly donโ€™t know how we would keep things going.

Today, we celebrate you โ€“ and all the women across South Africa who grow, lead, nurture, and fight for a better future. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’ช

๐ŸŒฑโœจ Seed Saving โ€“ Growing More Than Just Plants โœจ๐ŸŒฑ

Saving seeds is more than just a gardening trick โ€“ itโ€™s a way to grow freedom, resilience, and connection. ๐Ÿ’š

When we collect our own seeds, we know exactly what weโ€™re planting: pure, natural, and untreated. No chemicals, no surprises. Plus, we save money and become less dependent on seed companies. ๐Ÿ’ธ๐ŸŒพ

Over time, these seeds learn from our soil, our climate, and our care โ€“ becoming stronger with each season. ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ

And maybe the best part? Sharing seeds brings people together. It connects us to old traditions, to nature, and to each other. Letโ€™s keep these storiesโ€”and seedsโ€”growing. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’ซ

What a day! ๐ŸŒฑโ˜€
Together with a wonderful team, we got our hands dirty and our hearts full as we started building a wheelchair-accessible and medicinal plant garden at Thambalethu Daycare Center. We raised the beds, planted the first seedlings, and took the first steps toward a space thatโ€™s green, inclusive, and full of life.'

'Weโ€™re beyond grateful to the Hollywoodbets Team โ€“ your generous support made this dream a reality. Thank you for believing in this project and in the power of community.'

'And a big thank-you to BETSoftware for supporting us at Abalimi with technical and electrical equipment โ€“ your contribution keeps everything running, quite literally!'

'We can't wait to see this garden grow into a safe, healing, and joyful space for everyone at Thambalethu. This is just the beginning!' ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’š ย

๐ŸŒฑ Farm Visit at Feed the Khaltsha ๐ŸŒฟ
Last Friday, we had the opportunity to visit the beautiful community garden Feed the Khaltsha โ€“ as part of a PGS verification (Participatory Guarantee System). ๐Ÿ’š

The goal of the visit was to check whether the garden is truly following organic farming practices and complying with the rules set by our community. Together with fellow farmers and community members, we asked questions, shared knowledge, and took a closer look at how things are growing. ๐Ÿ”

โœจ The garden looks fantastic โ€“ well cared for, diverse, and full of life. Itโ€™s always a pleasure to walk through such a successful and inspiring space.
A big thank you and shout-out to the Feed the Khaltsha team for the amazing work youโ€™re doingย everyย day!ย ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’ช

Training is one of our core pillars ๐ŸŒฑ
In this post, weโ€™re sharing an overview of the main courses we offer at our garden centres.

๐Ÿ’ก Our Basic Urban Farming course takes place every two weeks at both of our centres โ€” it's the heart of what we do.

For our other two courses, we listen closely to the needs of our community. Based on those needs, we develop tailored workshops with relevant topics and flexible dates.

Each workshop includes:
๐Ÿ“„ Handouts
๐Ÿฅ— A shared lunch
๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐ŸŒพ And ongoing support โ€” weโ€™re here to answer questions and do follow-up visits whenever needed.

If you're interested in our workshop materials or want to exchange knowledge, feel free to reach out! We'd love to connect.

๐Ÿ’š Thanks to your generous support, we can keep our workshops affordable:
Each training costs 1000 Rand per participant, but we only charge 70 Rand โ€” the rest is covered by donations.
Your help keeps us growing.
