Abalimi Bezekhaya Abalimi Bezekhaya teaches home and community gardens to grow vegetables organically in the townships

Abalimi Bezekhaya (meaning farmers of the home in isiXhosa) is a non-profit urban-farming organization, established in 1982, that supports individuals and groups from disadvantaged communities in Cape Town through providing facilitation and training on organic food production for nutrition, health, food security and income generation. Abalimi provides the following support services, which are our

five main pillars of development:

1) Training and mentoring, as well as professional extension services (e.g. organisation building, research, soil testing, monitoring and evaluation, management and accounting services).

2) Supply of agricultural inputs for production (e.g. manure, seeds and seedlings) via our garden centres.

3) Soil and infrastructure capital input, which the farmers cannot build up on their own. This includes the major part of their manure to improve soil infrastructure within the harsh dune sand environment and extreme weather conditions and irrigation infrastructure.

4) Support in market access to allow farmers to sell their produce for income generation.

5) Enable farmers to develop their organisations and negotiate all manner of social dynamics.

This Earth Day, we’re reminded that caring for the planet starts close to home. 🌱🌍

In the Cape Flats, where soil is sandy and resources are limited, small-scale farmers are transforming the land — growing fresh food, supporting their families, and building more resilient communities.

At Abalimi Bezekhaya, this is what connection to nature looks like: hands in the soil, shared knowledge, and the power to grow your own food.🪴💫

In a world that often feels disconnected from nature, these gardens show us what’s possible when people work with the Earth, not against it.

💚 Every training, every seed, every harvest makes a difference.

This Earth Day, take a moment to reconnect — and support solutions that restore both people and the planet. ✨🍀

How are you connecting with nature today?

Hello, my former colleagues

I hope you’re all doing well. I’m reaching out to express my gratitude to the Abalimi Bezekhaya management for grooming me during my internship and preparing me for the agricultural industry. Thank you for the opportunity to learn and grow.

I remember the tasks you delegated to me, such as managing the herb garden, handling sales when Amanda was away, and planting vegetables. I didn’t appreciate the value of those tasks at the time, but I’ve come to realize that each one played a significant role in my development. Even something as simple as leading meetings has helped me improve my public speaking skills.

There’s a lot more I could say, but I’ll keep it brief. I wish Abalimi Bezekhaya could secure funding to continue taking on interns and providing them with valuable training. You’ve created an environment where interns can truly grow and prepare for the industry.

I’m Maliviwe Wogqoyi, a proud product of Abalimi Bezekhaya, and I’m doing well in the agricultural industry.

Thank you again!

Some of you might remember Ma Bokolo who managed to our Nyanga Garden Centre for many years.

She retired three years ago and moved back to the Eastern Cape but has not stopped growing vegetables.

Abalimi supports farmers in the Eastern Cape and here you can see her latest harvest. She really knows how to make magic. Keep up the great work Ma Bokolo!!✨🍀

Every week, we bring you a fresh selection of organic seedlings — carefully grown, naturally nurtured, and full of life. 🌱

Our seedlings come straight from trusted organic growers who believe that healthy soil is the foundation of healthy food. No chemicals, no shortcuts — just pure, sustainable growth from seed to sprout.

Starting your garden with organic seedlings means giving your plants the best possible beginning: stronger roots, better resistance, and vegetables that are as nutrient-rich as they are delicious. 🍅🥕🌽

🌿 This week, Abalimi Bezekhaya hosted a three-day Basic Urban Agriculture Training — and what an inspiring few days it was! 🙌

More than 20 enthusiastic participants came together to learn the fundamentals of organic farming and urban gardening — from planting seeds and preparing soil to understanding how to grow healthy, sustainable food even in challenging urban conditions. 🌱💧

The training combined theory and hands-on practice: after learning about different cultivation methods and soil management in the classroom, participants got the chance to apply their new knowledge directly in the garden. 🌾

We’re proud to see so many community members taking steps toward greener cities, stronger local food systems, and a more sustainable future! 💚🌍
