Abalimi Bezekhaya

Abalimi Bezekhaya teaches home and community gardens to grow vegetables organically in the townships

Abalimi Bezekhaya (meaning farmers of the home in isiXhosa) is a non-profit urban-farming organization, established in 1982, that supports individuals and groups from disadvantaged communities in Cape Town through providing facilitation and training on organic food production for nutrition, health, food security and income generation. Abalimi provides the following support services, which are our five main pillars of development:

1) Training and mentoring, as well as professional extension services (e.g. organisation building, research, soil testing, monitoring and evaluation, management and accounting services).

2) Supply of agricultural inputs for production (e.g. manure, seeds and seedlings) via our garden centres.

3) Soil and infrastructure capital input, which the farmers cannot build up on their own. This includes the major part of their manure to improve soil infrastructure within the harsh dune sand environment and extreme weather conditions and irrigation infrastructure.

4) Support in market access to allow farmers to sell their produce for income generation.

5) Enable farmers to develop their organisations and negotiate all manner of social dynamics.

🌱 Open Day in Nyanga! 🌱
Last week Friday , we opened up our Garden Center to the community – a day full of sun, smiles and happy people!

Visitors had the chance to meet our team and explore all the resources we offer to support local gardeners. From seeds and tools to ideas and support – everything was on display and ready to discover. 🌾💡

When we collect our own seeds, we know exactly what we’re planting: pure, natural, and untreated. No chemicals, no surprises. Plus, we save money and become less dependent on seed companies. 💸🌾

What a day! 🌱☀
Together with a wonderful team, we got our hands dirty and our hearts full as we started building a wheelchair-accessible and medicinal plant garden at Thambalethu Daycare Center. We raised the beds, planted the first seedlings, and took the first steps toward a space that’s green, inclusive, and full of life.'

🌱 Farm Visit at Feed the Khaltsha 🌿
Last Friday, we had the opportunity to visit the beautiful community garden Feed the Khaltsha – as part of a PGS verification (Participatory Guarantee System). 💚

The goal of the visit was to check whether the garden is truly following organic farming practices and complying with the rules set by our community. Together with fellow farmers and community members, we asked questions, shared knowledge, and took a closer look at how things are growing. 🔍

✨ The garden looks fantastic – well cared for, diverse, and full of life. It’s always a pleasure to walk through such a successful and inspiring space.

Training is one of our core pillars 🌱
In this post, we’re sharing an overview of the main courses we offer at our garden centres.

💡 Our Basic Urban Farming course takes place every two weeks at both of our centres — it's the heart of what we do.

For our other two courses, we listen closely to the needs of our community. Based on those needs, we develop tailored workshops with relevant topics and flexible dates.

Each workshop includes:
📄 Handouts
🥗 A shared lunch
👩🏾‍🌾 And ongoing support — we’re here to answer questions and do follow-up visits whenever needed.

💚 Thanks to your generous support, we can keep our workshops affordable:
Each training costs 1000 Rand per participant, but we only charge 70 Rand — the rest is covered by donations.

This week, we hosted a very special training at our center in Nyanga – this time with some amazing young participants! 🌱✨

The group was made up of children who joined the workshop with so much curiosity, joy, and enthusiasm. Unlike our usual Basic Course sessions, this one was more hands-on, with lots of practical activities and group work to keep the kids engaged and involved. 👐👧🏽👦🏾

Our 12 young participants did an incredible job – we’re so proud of each and every one of them! 💪

We're already looking forward to next week's kids' training at our other center in Khayelitsha! 🚀🌍

We’ve been busy in the gardens and workshops, but we wanted to take a moment to reconnect with you. 🤗

Here’s a quick reminder of what Abalimi Bezekhaya is all about. Our name means “farmers of the home” in isiXhosa. Since 1982, we’ve been working with communities across the Cape Flats to grow healthy food and brighter futures. 🌱

Over the last and next few weeks, we’ll be using this space to reintroduce ourselves — sharing our values, pillars, and a few glimpses behind the scenes. We hope you’ll enjoy getting to know us (again). 💚

Youth empowerment is close to our hearts 💚
In honour of Youth Day, we’re celebrating the young people who have joined our training programmes over the past year — and the bright future they’re helping grow.

🌿 Since last year, we trained 145 youth across our garden centres and outreach projects.
📊 Of these, 53% were young men and 47% young females, and all brought energy, curiosity, and commitment to learning.

Our youth training follows the same community-led approach as all our programmes:
👩🏾‍🌾 Practical skills in urban farming
🌱 A strong focus on self-reliance and sustainability
🤝 Continuous support and mentoring

We believe that training young people in regenerative agriculture is one of the most powerful ways to invest in the future — for them, their families, and their communities.
