Autism: Now What? Conference 2024
This past weekend, I attended the Autism: Now What? Conference 2024, hosted by The Star Academy at Two Oceans Aquarium. The event featured insightful presentations by Dr. Nicola Antonucci, who shared valuable information on causes and medical treatments for autism, and Ilana, Martin and Eli Gerschlowitz, who spoke about their personal journey with autism and the transformative role of ABA (Applied Behavioural Analysis) therapy.
A few key takeaways and facts about autism:
🌍 Autism now affects 1 in 36 children
🧠 Autism is a spectrum – each individual experiences it differently, with varying strengths and areas of need.
🚩 Red flags for early diagnosis include limited eye contact, delayed speech, repetitive behaviors, resistance to change, lack of interest in peer interaction, repetitive movements, and unusual sensory sensitivities. Identifying these early on allows for more effective support and intervention.
🧬 Medical treatments are emerging as complementary tools in addressing some of the symptoms associated with autism and for related conditions
💡 Early intervention is crucial – Research shows that early intervention can significantly improve a child’s developmental outcomes, especially in areas like communication, social interaction, and school readiness. ABA is an evidence-based intervention that helps improve communication, social skills, and behavior and other treatments like speech therapy, occupational therapy, and sensory integration therapy can address specific challenges.
The journey with autism is unique for each family, but with early support and comprehensive care, individuals with autism can thrive. Let’s continue to advocate for inclusion, acceptance, and accessible support for all! 💙
