The hip joint is crucial for maintaining balance, stability, and proper alignment of the spine. You probably know this in regard to walking, running and other activities. Did you know that hip mobility is also important for sitting posture?

Tight hips can have a significant impact on sitting posture. When the hip muscles are tight, it can affect the way you sit and contribute to various postural issues.

Tight hip flexors can pull the pelvis forward, leading to an anterior pelvic tilt. This can cause the lower back to arch excessively, leading to increased pressure on the lumbar spine.

The natural curvature (lordosis) of the lumbar spine can decrease when the hips are tight. It may be challenging to maintain the normal curve in the lower back while sitting, potentially leading to a flattened or rounded lumbar spine.

Tight hip muscles can also affect the overall alignment of the spine, causing the upper body to lean forward. This hunched posture can result in increased strain on the muscles of the upper back and neck, potentially leading to stiffness and discomfort.

The poor posture and spinal alignment can increase pressure on the intervertebral discs in the spine, leading to disc related back pain and disorders.

Limited range of motion due to tight hips may make it difficult to find a comfortable sitting position. This limitation can lead to compensatory movements, poor posture and increased stress on other parts of the body.

It is school athletics and "new year exercise resolution" time of the year. Let's discuss the role your FEET play in being pain-free active.

STIFF FEET may contribute to KNEE PAIN by altering the biomechanics of the lower extremities.

The feet play a crucial role in absorbing shock and providing stability during activities like walking, running, and standing. YES EVEN IN SCHOOL KIDS When the feet are stiff, it can lead to changes in the way forces are distributed through the lower limbs, affecting the knees and other joints.

Here are some potential ways in which stiff feet may contribute to knee pain:

ALTERED BIOMECHANICS: Stiff feet can affect the normal biomechanics of walking and running. The feet are the first point of contact with the ground, and if they lack flexibility, the forces from each step may not be adequately absorbed. This can lead to increased stress on the knees.

POOR SHOCK ABSORPTION: The feet act as natural shock absorbers; stiffness can reduce their ability to absorb impact forces. As a result, the shock may be transferred up the kinetic chain, potentially causing increased stress on the knees.

ALTERED GAIT PATTERNS: Individuals with stiff feet may adopt compensatory movements or postures to alleviate discomfort, placing additional strain on the knee joints.

INCREASED JOINT LOADING: The lack of flexibility in the feet may lead to increased loading on the knee joints. This added stress can contribute to the development or exacerbation of knee pain, especially in weight-bearing activities.

MUSCLE IMBALANCES: Stiff feet can contribute to muscle imbalances in the lower limbs. This may affect the alignment and function of the knee joint, potentially leading to pain and discomfort.

Knee pain can have various causes, and stiff feet are just one potential factor.
