Step 4 is personal, but it is not meant to be private. It is preparation for Step 5, where you share what you have written with another person and with God. That is why the inventory has to be thorough. A half-done Step 4 leads to a half-done Step 5, and the whole point is to clear the wreckage so you can build something solid.

At The Bridge, we take the work seriously because the stakes are real.

If you have done Step 4 before, you know what it asks of you. If you are doing it for the first time, you are about to find out. Either way, the process is the same: honest, thorough, and written down. The Big Book calls it a business inventory. You are looking at the assets and the liabilities, not to judge yourself, but to understand yourself.

That understanding is the beginning of real change.

No one who has done an honest Step 4 regrets it. That is worth saying clearly. The process is uncomfortable. The discomfort is temporary. The relief that follows is real and it lasts. If you are dreading your inventory, that dread is normal. Let it sit next to you while you write anyway.

The Bridge Sober Living supports people through every step, including the ones that feel impossible.

April was Step 4 month at The Bridge. For everyone who sat down with their inventory this month, whether you finished it or just got started, that took courage. The work is not always linear and it is not always comfortable. But every honest word you wrote is a step away from the life that brought you here and toward the one you are building.

Step 5 is coming. You will not walk that one alone either.

Fear is the other side of the Step 4 coin. The resentment list gets most of the attention, but the fear inventory is where many people find the deepest material. What are you afraid of losing? What are you afraid people will find out? What have you been protecting yourself from? Those questions have answers, and writing them down takes away a lot of their power.

Step 4 is not easy. It is worth it.

The Big Book does not ask you to be perfect before you start Step 4. It asks you to be willing. Willing to look. Willing to write. Willing to sit with what comes up. Willingness is the only requirement, and it is enough to begin.
The Bridge Sober Living exists for people who are willing. If that is you, or someone you know, we are here.

Step 4 is often called the housecleaning step. You go into the rooms of your past with a light and you look at what is actually there, not what you feared was there, and not a version you have softened to make it easier to live with. Honest. Clear. Thorough.

That kind of honesty is hard to do alone. It is a lot easier in a community built around recovery.

A lot of people in recovery spend years carrying things they were never meant to carry alone. Unspoken harm. Old wounds that never healed. Patterns that kept repeating. Step 4 gives those things a name and a place on paper, which is the first step to putting them down.

At The Bridge, we walk with people through every stage of this process because we know from experience that it works.

There is a difference between guilt and shame. Guilt says, "I did something wrong." Shame says, "I am something wrong." Step 4 is designed to surface both, and to help you separate them. The inventory is not there to confirm your worst beliefs about yourself. It is there to clear them out.

If you are ready to do the work, The Bridge is ready to hold the space.

Resentment is the number one offender according to the Big Book. Step 4 asks you to list every person, institution, or situation you resent, and then look at your part. That part is the hard part. It is also the part that changes everything.
Recovery at The Bridge is built on honest work, real community, and practical support for every stage of the journey.

Most people avoid Step 4 for one reason: they are afraid of what they will find. That fear is understandable. Looking honestly at yourself, your resentments, your fears, and the harm you have caused takes courage. But the inventory is not a sentence. It is a map. It shows you where you have been so you can choose where you go next.

At The Bridge, no one walks through the steps alone.

Step 4 is where the real work begins. This month at The Bridge Sober Living, we are walking alongside every person in our community through one of the most important steps in the program. "Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves." That word fearless is the point. It does not mean you will not feel afraid. It means you do the work anyway.

If you or someone you love is ready to take that step in a safe, supported environment, reach out to us today.
