It's learning disability awareness week (17th - 23rd June).

Not every child has the same learning style and ability as their peers. In the words of Albert Einstein "“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

It's time for us to stop trying to squeeze square pegs into round holes and give children with alternative learning abilities the tools to be the geniuses they're created to be.

"The top five most common learning disabilities are dyslexia, ADHD, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, and dyspraxia. Each of these conditions can present with a range of symptoms and can be diagnosed through a combination of medical and educational assessments." ref. Idrfa.org

KEEPING THE BALANCE IN STRESSFUL TIMES

It’s exam time again. Because we can get as stressed or more so than our children during this time, it’s easy to add unnecessary pressure.

The importance of doing well and studying hard is being emphasized at school, along with the pressure of how well they have or have not done to date during the academic year, and the expectations of parents.

In as much as it is important for children to knuckle down and do what is required to achieve good or better results, it’s also important to have times of restoration and balance whilst they’re under pressure.

Sticking to a structured routine, getting enough sleep, eating nutritionally and regularly, a bit of exercise, preferably outdoors or a bit of down time, as well as quality parent or family time, all play an important role in keeping a child in a mindset that helps to relieve some of the pressure and maintain a healthy balance between responsibility and well-being.
