Imani Treatment

Imani Treatment Imani offers a full continuum of care necessary to complete the recovery process. Treatment can take 4 weeks to 6 months depending on what is required.

The Imani eating disorder treatment programme is tailored to the individual needs of each client, and takes into consideration the way the disorder manifests itself in a person's lifestyle. The counselling team guides the individual in learning assertiveness skills, positive body image, self-esteem, feeling management and relapse prevention. We aim to restore the individual to a place of self-acceptance and self-worth, where he or she can pursue a rich and rewarding life, free of fear and despair.

🐴 Giving Back as Part of Recovery🐴

At Imani Treatment Centre for Eating Disorders, we encourage clients in the later phases of treatment to engage in volunteer work as a way of reconnecting with the world beyond the therapy space.

Volunteering builds confidence, nurtures empathy, and helps clients rediscover a sense of purpose.

One of our clients has recently begun volunteering at SARDA (South African Riding for the Disabled Association) — a Cape Town-based organisation offering free equine therapy to children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities.

“Being at SARDA reminds me how much meaning can be found in showing up for others. Seeing the children’s faces light up with a smile when they ride the horses gives me a sense of belonging and it fills me with hope and encouragement for my own journey too.” says Renske, one of our Imani Clients

Volunteering is not just about helping others — it can be an empowering step in recovery.

At Imani Treatment Centre, we remind our clients that each step forward, no matter how small, is part of the ongoing cycle toward light, freedom, and hope. Recovery takes time, but just as night gives way to morning, healing creates space for new beginnings.

🌊🐋Whale Watching in Hermanus🌊🐋

At Imani Treatment Centre, we believe that healing is not confined to therapy rooms — it also happens through lived experience, moments of connection, and rediscovering joy.

This week, some of our clients experienced the wonder of whale watching in Hermanus. Watching these gentle giants breach and glide through the ocean reminds us of resilience, patience, and the power of surfacing after deep waters.

Recovery, like the ocean, can feel vast and overwhelming at times. But just as whales rise for air, each of us has the strength to rise — again and again. 🌊🐋

🌱 Growing Stronger, Together🌱

Like these intertwined trees, recovery is not a journey we take alone. At Imani, we believe that healing is rooted in connection, support, and strength that grows together.

Even the strongest trees begin as small seeds. With time, care, and the right environment, growth becomes unstoppable. Recovery is no different — it takes patience, compassion, and safe ground to take root.

And just as every branch matters and every root plays a role, at Imani we honor the unique story each person brings. Together, we form something stronger, more resilient, and more beautiful than we could ever be alone.

🌿Peer Reflections Group 🌿
At Imani Treatment Centre, we believe healing is not a journey walked alone — and our Peer Reflections Group is one of the ways we ensure no one has to. 💚
This dedicated space provides a safe and supportive environment where we reflect not only on ourselves, but also on each other in meaningful and recovery-focused ways.
✨ How it works: Self-Reflection — each member takes time to share personal observations from the past week, noticing behaviours, patterns, challenges, and moments of growth.
✨Peer Feedback — we offer each other reflections and recognitions. Reflections gently bring awareness to behaviours that may not be serving recovery, while recognitions celebrate progress, insight, and positive change.

This group is not about judgement or criticism. Instead, it’s about honesty with kindness, openness with compassion, and feedback given in a way that strengthens recovery.By sharing our experiences and insights, we help one another gain new perspectives, deepen self-awareness, and celebrate the courage it takes to keep moving forward.

Together, we grow stronger. Together, we recover. 🌿

🌾 Riding to Recovery 🌾

Recently, some of our clients embarked on an exhilarating quad biking adventure across the Atlantis Sand Dunes — one of Cape Town’s most breathtaking natural landscapes.

Beyond the thrill of racing over white sands and vast skies, these experiences offer something deeper. They remind us of freedom, presence, and trust — all vital aspects of the recovery journey.

Challenging both body and mind in unfamiliar terrain helps to:
✨ Build confidence
✨ Release tension
✨ Reawaken a sense of joyful risk in a safe, supported way

At Imani, we believe that healing is not just about looking inward. It’s also about venturing outward, discovering life beyond the clinic, and embracing new possibilities. Recovery is not the end of the road — it’s the beginning of a life worth living. 🌱

Recovery One Stitch at a Time 🧶

A single stitch can tell a story. What begins as a quiet, solitary act can grow into something extraordinary.

At Imani, one of our clients found comfort and strength through crocheting. What started as a way to steady hands and quiet anxious thoughts became a meaningful tool for self-regulation. The rhythmic repetition of crochet not only helped ease social anxiety but also created a bridge into the communal living space — from silence to shared laughter, from isolation to connection.

Therapeutically, mindful, repetitive activities like crocheting regulate the nervous system: slowing breathing, reducing anxiety, and creating a safe rhythm for emotional processing. Over time, this simple practice grew into confidence — from whispers to words, from hesitation to expressing needs, until she became an integral part of the community.

The blanket she created told its own story too, stitched with symbols of the African landscape: the courage of the lion, the strength of the rhino, the grace of the giraffe. Each animal reflected qualities being discovered and embraced through recovery.
Sometimes healing begins in the smallest of ways — one stitch at a time.

“One Day at a Time — Nearly Ten Years Later”

In 2016, a young woman arrived at Imani feeling broken and alone. Five months later, she left still scared — but with hope.

Almost a decade on, she reflects:
“You can’t erase an eating disorder — but you can recover from it. Imani gave me the tools, community, and perspective that still guide me today. Recovery didn’t just free me—it made space for life.”
Now at 28, she continues choosing recovery, one day at a time — living a life she once thought was impossible.

Room to Rage, Space to Heal

At Imani Treatment Centre, we know eating disorders aren’t just about food — they often stem from deeper emotional pain. One of the hardest emotions for many in recovery? Anger.

That’s why we recently took a group of clients to a Rage Room — not just to have fun (though it definitely was), but to explore safe, embodied ways to express anger.

Behind the smashing glass and the wrecked-up car 🚗💥 was something far more meaningful:
🛠️ Letting go of suppression
⚡ Releasing emotions long held in silence
💬 Learning that feeling anger doesn’t make you “bad” — it makes you human

At Imani, we make space for all emotions — even the ones society teaches us to hide.Sometimes healing starts with a bat, a wrecked car 🚘, and the sound of something finally breaking.

Beginning with Serenity
At Imani Treatment Centre, each day begins not with urgency, but with intention.
Before the rhythm of therapy sessions and group work, we begin in stillness. A moment to breathe.
To centre.
To reconnect — not just with ourselves, but with something deeper and greater.

Whether it’s through the words of the Serenity Prayer, a guiding moment of quiet, or reading a passage from Just for Today, we invite calm into the day ahead.

This simple ritual is more than routine. It’s a way of saying: Today, I choose presence.
In recovery, the path can feel uneven, sometimes steep — but beginning each morning grounded in serenity allows us to walk it with steadier steps.

In those first quiet moments, our community gathers not as clients and clinicians, but as humans — each carrying stories, struggles, and hopes. And from this gentle beginning, the day unfolds.

🪨 Balance in Recovery 🪨

One of our clients created this stone stack during a quiet moment in nature — a powerful, visual symbol of balance. But true balance in recovery goes far beyond what we can see.

For many in treatment, life before recovery felt like teetering at the edge: all-or-nothing thinking, chaotic eating patterns, emotional extremes.

Finding balance means learning to live in the in-between. It means permission to rest without guilt, to eat without fear, to feel emotions without being overwhelmed by them.
Balance is not perfection. It’s a return to centre, again and again. That’s the work — and the gift — of recovery.
