Social norms and peer reinforcement play a critical role in sustaining violence.

Research figures show that 2 in 3 of SA’s femicide cases will likely happen in Eastern Cape, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal.

Gender-based violence is often driven by power, control, and entitlement.

7 women are murdered in South Africa each day. In 2020/21, 60.1% were killed by a current or former partner. Fi****ms remain a key factor in many of these cases (SAMRC 4th Femicide Survey, 2024).

In the 2021 SAMRC & Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance evidence review, researchers noted that alcohol misuse considerably contributes to increased violence against women.

Bullying does not happen in isolation.

Research by the Gender and Health Research Unit has found a 40% high prevalence of bullying, indicating a substantial burden of violence in schools.

The findings also show that bullying is shaped by multiple factors, including individual behaviour, peer relationships, and the wider school environment.

A country is as free as the homes we make and the systems that protect the people within them.

SAMRC research shows that in South Africa, violence often happens between people who know each other, in families, relationships, and shared living spaces.

World Malaria Day draws attention to malaria as a continued public health concern in South Africa.

Malaria remains endemic in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo, with a national goal to achieve elimination by 2030.

This reflects a broader global challenge, the WHO African Region accounts for 94% of malaria cases, with a 23.8% increase between 2015 and 2025 (World Malaria Report, 2025).

Responding to this, the SAMRC’s Malaria Research Group advances research, surveillance, and strategies that support malaria control and elimination efforts.

Chronic kidney disease is quietly affecting millions across Africa.

New research shows that it is far more common among adults in Africa than global estimates, with 1 in 7 adults potentially living with the condition, most without knowing, until it is advanced.

This landmark study, that will be published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases by the CKD-Africa Collaboration, reinforces a critical priority: strengthening early detection through routine screening at the primary healthcare level.

Among the contributing authors are SAMRC researchers Dr Cindy George and Dr Dipuo Motshwari from the Non-Communicable Diseases Research Unit, who were part of a large-scale analysis of data across 19 African countries, generating the most robust estimates yet of CKD prevalence on the continent.

The SAMRC is injecting $400, 000.00 into South African health and medical research funding to address strategies for supporting health systems to improve equitable health outcomes globally.

“This investment reflects a deliberate shift toward implementation science that ensures proven interventions translate into real-world impact, particularly in health systems that serve the most vulnerable populations,” said Prof Ntobeko Ntusi, President and CEO of the SAMRC.

SAMRC contributes to WHO guidelines on the treatment of opioid dependence and the community management of opioid overdose. The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced updated recommendations for its forthcoming guidelines on the treatment of opioid dependence and the community management of opioid overdose, responding to the substantial global burden of opioid-related morbidity and mortality. The South African Medical Research Council, through its Mental health, Alcohol, Substance use and To***co Research Unit (MASTRU), played a key role in the development of these guidelines as the guidelines methodologist responsible for ensuring the scientific rigour of the methods used to formulate these new guidelines.
