Wellness Week 2025

The first day of Wellness Week started off with a visit from Hearing Aid Labs, who provided Ear Health Services to our Residents – Including Free Hearing Screenings, Diagnostic Testing, Hearing Aid Evaluations, and Hearing Aid Cleaning and Checking. What a wonderful service offering to our Residents!

Day 2 proved to be very popular, with a scrumptious wellness buffet on offer for lunch, followed by fun newspaper races in the dining room!

Day 3 brought Alison Thomson, Physiotherapist, to Oasis to talk about and demonstrate the Launch of their ‘FALLS RISK SCREENING TOOL’. They discussed falls and fall prevention, and also demonstrated the tests that research has shown to assess one’s risk of falling. Such an informative morning and so relevant to our Residents.

A group of Residents braved the cold in the afternoon and played a game of Croquet on the lawn – a Sport that we hope to revive soon at Oasis!

Day 4 – Our Residents were invited to a fun day of Ten-pin bowling in the Conference room! Soon, two teams were formed, and a friendly competition ensued, resulting in tons of fun for all.

Day 5 –Our Quizz-master Lynn’s morning Quizz was an absolute blast! Great energy and some surprising trivia questions, too! We got the sense that for most participants, it was a refreshing start to the day, and it definitely got the Competitive juices flowing! As one participant said, “I may not have won the quiz, but I definitely had fun”!

Wellness Week ended with the movie “Judy,” a moving drama based on the life of American entertainer Judy Garland.

In June last year, Wiehann (Facilities Lead) and Sandi (Facilities Coordinator) visited at their Epping depot for an insightful behind-the-scenes tour. The visit provided a clear view of how Wasteplan’s daily operations function and how Oasis plays a role in the broader waste management ecosystem.

During the walkabout, the Wasteplan team showed the Oasis team around the facility, explaining each stage of their process. A highlight was their in-house Engineering Department, which manufactures containers and handles all wheelie bin repairs—keeping operations smooth and efficient.

With around 800 staff across two shifts, Wasteplan operates like a well-oiled machine. Seeing their machinery in action, compressing dry waste into bales for export, was particularly impressive and showcased the scale of their recycling efforts.

Oasis + Wasteplan: Small steps in recycling, giant leaps for the planet!

Wednesday morning, July 16th 2025, turned out to be a very enjoyable time for the Bible Study Group. The theme for the morning was “Bride and Bridegroom”, and we brought our wedding photos to browse through. The challenge was to recognise each other as the passage of time had made its mark. The programme began with Mendelsohn’s Wedding March, followed by a message on the Bride of Christ by Thy Cameron. Thanks to Marina Tromp, we had a wedding dress on display, and thanks to Sharneen C., we had fruit cake to remind us of the wedding cakes of long ago. Other lovely goodies to eat were contributed, and there was lots of chatter. As someone remarked at the end of the meeting, “What a lovely morning.”

Biokineticist Grant de Wet is our Gym Instructor at Oasis. After he’s given us, his clients, our gym and/or aqua aerobics workouts, at the end of the day, he goes on to train at least six times a week at his local gym, False Bay Fitness.

Oh, the energy of youth!

Recently, Grant entered a Hyrox competition that consisted of a series of eight standardised workouts, each followed by a 1-kilometre run. Some of the competitors came short in this competition of strength and endurance, but not Grant!

We, the Oasis Residents, are fortunate to have these exercise facilities at the Wellness Centre, along with Grant, who is an excellent manager/trainer and athlete.

SOLD | PALM SPRINGS 402

A son was on the lookout for an apartment for his mother within the Oasis Retirement Resort. He was sure that this was the ideal place for her to move to for her lifestyle needs. Acting quickly, as soon as the sales mandate was signed, we reached out to him and he came to view the apartment with his mother. A sale was concluded almost immediately.

We look forward to welcoming our excited new resident to the Oasis family early in 2026.
