Earth Week 2025 kicked off with the movie ‘The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind', followed by Cocktail Hour in the Clubhouse, which was well attended!

On Thursday, April 24th, Residents were entertained by Storyteller Philippa Kabali-Kagwa. Philippa was born in Uganda and believes that stories come into our lives to heal us, reconnect us with our humanity, create community, remind us who we are, and invite us to dream of who we can be. She works with folk tales, personal stories, and poetry. It was an interesting and very enjoyable morning indeed!

The Restaurant pulled out all the stops for an Earth-shattering Lunch menu with Oasis’ favourites—oxtail with red wine and Butterbeans on Thursday and a wonderful Lamb Spitting Braai on Friday! Needless to say, the restaurant was fully booked on both days!

Our Power Our Planet celebration on Friday kicked off with replanting our Lemon Tree in a more ‘earth-friendly’ spot! This was celebrated with a Sparkling mint Spritz and a very special song and dance by our very own Eldred Polikoff, Mistry, and Lucky! What a joyful morning as the rest of the staff joined them in song!

Our fifth Oasis Earth Week ended on a high with fabulous singing by the Thinta La Rocce Acapella Group, the Maryland Student Choir and our Oasis Residents Choir.

The Oasis Choir began as a small group of six residents, inspired by Dorothy Wilson and initially led by Maria Martinengo, and has grown into a close-knit community of over 30 members who gather weekly to share their love of music.

What started with challenges—imperfect voices, unfamiliar technology, and ambitious song choices—soon became a joyful, laughter-filled journey of connection and creativity. With a mix of pop classics and heartfelt rehearsals, the choir has brought unity, pride, and emotional expression to its members. Maria's passion, patience, and musical background helped shape the group into a source of great fulfilment, culminating in memorable performances and a sense of family among the singers.

Now under the guidance of Savvas Avakoumides and Cari Mellow, the choir continues to thrive, proving that it’s never too late to make music, memories, and meaningful friends.
