iThemba School Capricorn

www.ithembaschool.co.za It provides pre-primary children aged 3-6 with a safe and creative learning environment, where they can develop themselves.

The iThemba School Capricorn bridges the educational gap for 75 children in the impoverished area of Capricorn, 20 km outside of Cape Town. Emphasis is put on numeracy, literacy and healthy nutrition. The classes are thought in English to equip the young learners, who mainly speak the African language of their parents, for the ongoing South African school system.

Happy Tuesday, everyone! 👋

We hope you’ve had a wonderful start to March.

The past couple of weeks at iThemba have been full of creativity and exploration as our learners focused on the theme “My Senses.”

Through activities like building faces with sensory features, playing with Play-Doh and textured materials, and sorting different textures, our little learners developed their fine motor skills, creativity, and sensory awareness. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm, curiosity, and growing confidence. 😇

We were also privileged to welcome Kolping volunteers Lisa, Paula, and Annemarie, who worked closely with our learners and brought great care and energy to the classroom.

Another highlight was our first parent engagement session of the year, which was very well attended. It was encouraging to see such strong support from our families as we continue to strengthen the partnership between parents, learners, and educators. 🫶

Happy Friday, everyone! 👋

Our learners continue to make wonderful progress in the classroom, and it has been a joy to witness their enthusiasm for school. 😇

Storytelling remains a favorite activity, sparking the imagination of our children and teachers alike. A variety of activities have brought color and energy to our days, fostering a vibrant and supportive learning environment.

Valentine’s Day added an extra sparkle to the week. Our learners dressed up for a day of celebration and fundraising, and their excitement was contagious. Their enthusiastic participation brought joy to the entire school community. 🥰

We were also happy to welcome Susanne, Hanna, and Paulina to our school community this week.

Our teachers continue to build strong, trusting relationships with our learners and parents, providing special support to our youngest children as they adjust to school life. Their patience, care, and dedication make all the difference. 🫶

We look forward to hosting our first parent-teacher meeting tomorrow, which is an important step in fostering positive partnerships and setting the foundation for the year ahead.

Happy Wednesday, everyone! 👋

The final weeks of the school year at iThemba were filled with joy, energy, and celebration. Our little learners enjoyed a season of fun and games as we wrapped up another successful year of growth and learning.

A big highlight was our annual school concert, where the children proudly took the stage with confidence and creativity. Final assessments went smoothly, reflecting the steady progress made throughout the year. To top it all off, we celebrated not one, but two Christmas parties – each one bringing laughter, excitement, and unforgettable memories.

We were especially honoured to welcome our very own Santa, Alexander Karst, Managing Director of Lufthansa InTouch, who brought smiles and joy to the children alongside his cheerful helpers. Learners also received beautifully packed gift boxes from the International School of Cape Town, making the season even more magical.

As we look back on 2025, we are proud of all our learners –especially those moving on to Grade R next year. They’ve grown in confidence, care, and curiosity, and we’re excited to see what the future holds for them.

Happy Friday, everyone! 👋

The past two weeks at iThemba Pre-School have been joyful and purposeful, filled with learning, preparation, and community connection.

Our classrooms were filled with color and curiosity as our little learners explored the world of fruits and vegetables through songs, stories, sensory play, and creative artwork. This theme taught valuable lessons about healthy eating and nature’s bounty.

Moreover, we were honored to host the City’s Waste Management Awareness Campaign onsite. Our learners enjoyed mascot Bingo and participated in engaging, interactive sessions about recycling and environmental care. These are important values that we care deeply about.

As some of our learners prepare to transition to primary school, our educators are supporting them with great care, nurturing the confidence and readiness they need for the journey ahead. We are proud of their resilience and grateful for the ongoing commitment of parents and caregivers.

Excitement is building as final rehearsals continue for our upcoming concert, "The Magic Train Ride," which will take place on this upcoming weekend, November 22. 🚂✨The spirit of celebration is in full swing! 🤩

With just a few weeks left in the school year, our staff is working hard. We are finalizing concert preparations, supporting transitions, and planning our year-end festivities. Their dedication is the heart of iThemba. 🫶

Happy Tuesday, everyone! 👋

We hope you have had a great start to the new month.

The past two weeks at iThemba Pre-School have been filled with curiosity, creativity, and joyful learning. Our little learners explored the fascinating world of wild animals through engaging discussions and hands-on activities that sparked both imagination and discovery. 🐘🦒🦁

Preparations for our upcoming concert, "iThemba's Magic Train Ride," are well underway, with final rehearsals scheduled for November 17. The excitement is growing, and we can’t wait to see our learners shine on stage! 😇

One fun highlight was Sunglasses Day last Friday. Our learners arrived wearing their favorite sunglasses, adding sparkle and laughter to the playground – a lighthearted way to celebrate creativity and community spirit. 😎

We were also honored to welcome Michaela, Andreas, and their son, Christian, to our school community. Their visit brought joy, heartfelt interaction, and generous gifts of clothing and toys. We are grateful for their kindness and the wonderful example of Ubuntu they shared with us all. 🫶

Our recent bazaar was another opportunity to celebrate teamwork. Thanks to our staff's incredible efforts, the bazaar was a great success, raising more than expected and reinforcing our commitment to the iThemba mission. Well done, team! 🙌

Our learners returned with great enthusiasm after the holiday break, and the first week of the final term was filled with energy, laughter, and joyful learning. As we enter this important stretch before the December break, our children will be taking part in final assessments to help prepare them for Grade R in 2026. 📚

Excitement is also building for our upcoming school concert on 22 November - rehearsals are in full swing, and it’s been wonderful to see the creativity and dedication of our learners shine through. 😇

Happy Tuesday, everyone! 👋

The past two weeks have been filled with joyful activities and meaningful learning at our school. Painting, pasting, playing, and practicing have shaped each day, and our learners continue to grow in confidence and capability. 😇 Several of them are already showing readiness to transition to primary school within the next three months, which is a true testament to their development and the nurturing environment created by our staff.

Highlights included Book Day and Heritage Day, which celebrated the richness of our diversity and the spirit of the Rainbow Nation with color, culture, and connection.

We were also delighted to welcome three special guests from Germany: Lufthansa crew members Raymond, Amelie, and Shanna. Their visit was a joyful occasion for our children, who loved interacting with them and appreciated their generous clothing donation. 🙏

The past two weeks at our iThemba Pre-School have been filled with creativity, preparation, and play. Our little learners have enjoyed painting, pasting, and storytelling - activities that nurture emotional expression and spark imagination.

Excitement is building as our concert rehearsals continue. Our teachers have taken on the roles of directors, guiding learners who are enthusiastically embracing their parts as actors, singers, and dancers. This process builds confidence and performance skills while highlighting the diverse talents blossoming within each child. 😇

Play remains at the heart of our approach. Through guided activities and free exploration, learners continue to develop important social skills in a nurturing and engaging environment.

In addition, we would like to spotlight our staff Yve for his dedication in our school community. Since 2021, he has been a pillar of safety and care at iThemba, arriving early each day to ensure a safe and welcoming space for all. Originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Yve is a valued team member, passionate volunteer, and lifelong learner. His kindness, commitment, and bright smile are deeply appreciated by all of us. 🫶

Happy Tuesday, everyone! 👋

Over the past couple of weeks, our little learners have had the opportunity to engage in creative and exploratory activities, such as pasting, painting, storytelling, and playing. These activities support cognitive growth and imaginative expression. 😇

There's also a lot of excitement as our learners rehearse for the upcoming annual concert! Their enthusiasm for singing, acting, and dancing is contagious, and we can't wait to see them shine on stage. 🥰

We were happy to welcome Varkey and our board chairperson, Ian, to the school, as they brought renewed energy and engagement. The visit from Ada Nwajere, a former volunteer, was a special treat, with her presence serving as a reminder of the lasting bonds created through service and shared purpose.

Last Saturday, our dedicated staff met with parents to discuss our learners’ progress. The meeting was informative and meaningful. Sharing a meal together fostered rich conversation and strengthened the bond between the school and the homes of our learners.

Happy Friday, everyone 👋

After a three-week break, our iThemba Pre-School reopened this week with increased attendance and renewed energy. 😇 Although our school stayed open during the break, fewer students attended as many children stayed home with older siblings. We are grateful to our dedicated staff who stayed on duty throughout the winter holiday, caring for and engaging with a small group of learners.
Now that the new term is underway, our classrooms are once again filled with cheerful voices and lively activity. 😊

We also had the pleasure of welcoming two wonderful visitors this week. The One&Only Hotel Group brought smiles to our learners through playful activities and delicious meals. In celebration of Mandela Day, learners from the International School of Cape Town joined us, creating special moments of unity and connection.
These acts of kindness brightened our week and reminded us of the power of strong community partnerships. 🫶

Happy Thursday everyone 👋

Despite the cold, wet winter weather, the past two weeks have been filled with joy, energy, and connection. Our little learners participated in a variety of engaging classroom activities with their peers and teachers. Although attendance was affected by the weather, we are grateful to the many parents who continued to send their children, knowing they would be welcomed into a safe and caring environment. 😇

Our little learners also received their performance reports, which gave parents valuable insight into their progress in physical, cognitive, and social development. We are proud of their growth and thankful to our teaching team for their commitment to holistic learning.

To end the term on a fun and cozy note, we hosted a Sleepwear Day fundraiser last Friday. Our learners and educators arrived in their favorite winter pajamas, celebrating warmth, fun, and togetherness with big smiles all around! 🥰

Furthermore, we would like to thank our dedicated staff for guiding us through another successful term. 🙏 We will be on duty throughout the winter holiday, continuing to support, educate, and care for our children.

Happy Monday everyone 👋

We hope you all had a lovely weekend.

With the cold, wet weather settling in, it’s safe to say that winter has officially arrived. However, our learners continue to warm our hearts with their energy and eagerness to learn. 😇

Last week was full of activity, from midyear assessments and skills development to joyful classroom play. As Mark Twain said, "Never let formal education get in the way of your learning." - a reminder that our little learners grow in every moment, both in and beyond the classroom.

As we near the end of the term, our teachers are working hard to compile progress reports that offer valuable insight into each child's development. We will share these with parents to support continued growth and learning.

We also took time to celebrate some special people in our school family: Ian, Sharon, and Sue Ellen, who all had birthdays last week. 🥳 We send our warmest wishes and blessings for the year ahead! 🎊
