The story of the mobility canes distribution journey by Blind Adventurer, Christopher Venter, in South Africa in 2025

27/10/2024

📣Cool Project Alert

In early 2025, Christopher Venter - Blind Adventurer, Writer, Speaker, Content Creator with his mate, Mike, playing sighted guide, will embark on a journey to visit underprivileged schools for the blind in rural South Africa. For the journey, they will also be joined by the handsome guide dog, Sam.

Over the course of a month, they will visit eight special needs schools, two orphanages, and several mainstream schools. Partnering with the U.S. based organization You Cane Give Initiative, the intrepid explorers will donate mobility canes to the students most in need.Their expedition will take them through the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu Natal, the southern Free State, and the Karoo regions of the country. Lions Clubs International of South Africa has pledged to support the pair by hosting them and helping to engage local media as they travel through each region. This journey will serve as an opportunity for education and inspiration, embodying the mantra that, in an accessible world, a blind person can achieve anything a sighted person is able to.YouCaneGive has already generously provided hundreds of mobility canes to students in various parts of Africa, and this project aims to extend their reach to those most in need. Many of the schools they will visit are located down long dirt roads in extremely rural areas, often making them forgotten by society. Providing a collapsible mobility cane to these young learners will give them the invaluable gifts of mobility and independence. The enthusiastic explorers will depart from Cape Town in early February 2025 and return after a journey of around 4000km, most of which will be along dirt tracks. This project will provide access to life-changing tools that would otherwise be out of reach for most of these students. Who knows what paths they will forge with a proper mobility cane in hand?Your help is needed to make this project a success. If you know anyone travelling between South Africa and the US over the next couple months, perhaps you could ask them to help carry a few of the sponsored canes in their spare kgs of luggage? If you can host the team as they pass by offering them an overnight spot to crash or grabbing them lunch or some refreshments, please shout. If you know of any corporates that would like to get involved and sponsor some fuel for a promo visit enroute, please shout. If you have a few bucks spare and would like to make a financial contribution of any amount, check out our back a buddy page link for details on how to make that happen.
This is a feel good project that will educate, inspire and uplift. with help from the community, we can change the lives of hundreds of needy students. please help us make this dream a success.

Today, October 15th, we observe International White Cane Day—a day to honor the resilience and independence of blind individuals. The white cane is not just a mobility tool; it symbolizes freedom and empowerment, enabling those who are visually impaired to navigate their world with confidence and access essential services like schools, workplaces, and shops.

In South Africa, however, many people lack access to a white cane and resort to using makeshift alternatives, such as old car antennas or broom handles. I remember using a length of electrical conduit during my first year of blindness—a challenging experience that underscored the importance of having the right tools for independence.

Through our partnership with You Cane Give Initiative, we have been fortunate to equip hundreds of children with collapsible mobility canes, but we know there are many more who need our help. Our current focus is on reaching rural and under-resourced schools for the blind in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, and the Karoo—areas where the need is greatest.

While the canes themselves have been generously sponsored, we urgently need assistance with the distribution costs for our month-long journey, which will cover nearly 5,000 km. These funds will help cover fuel, camping, refreshments, and the shipping costs of bringing the canes from the US to South Africa.

We understand that times are tough, but even the smallest contribution can make a world of difference in a child's life. Your support can help us ensure that these children, who already face significant challenges, are equipped to navigate their surroundings with greater ease and confidence.

Please consider visiting our BackaBuddy campaign page to contribute. Together, we can bring hope and independence to those who need it most.

Thank you for your kindness and support,
Chris and Mike
