The Green Dietitian

The Green Dietitian Jessica Kotlowitz and Nadia Mulder are Registered Dietitians with a special interest in vegan diets Nutr, Stell.) Jessica qualified with a Bsc.

JESSICA KOTLOWITZ

Jessica Kotlowitz is a Registered Clinical Dietitian (Msc. who is passionate about helping others to achieve optimal health with the use of plant-based diets. in Dietetics from Stellenbosch University in 2012 after which she completed her Community Service year at Baragwaneth hospital in Johannesburg where she focused on all aspects of clinical nutrition, including Paediatric an

d neonatal nutrition, renal nutrition, surgical nutrition and oncology nutrition. After leaving Baragwaneth and moving back to Cape Town, Jessica came across the scientific evidence on the health benefits of a plant-based diet and decided to give it a try as a means to solving some of her own health problems. Her health problems almost immediately improved and she fell in love with the abundance and creativity of plant-based eating. She soon also became interested in the ethical and environmental aspects of living a vegan lifestyle and has been vegan ever since. She began sharing her passion for a plant-based lifestyle using social media in 2014 and began receiving requests from vegans and vegetarians for private consults which led her to opening her private practice. She realised that vegans and vegetarians had very little access to information and support from qualified healthcare professionals and were often subject to dangerous nutrition misinformation and shaming from their medical team. She made it her mission to provide professional nutrition support to fellow plant-based eaters and to guide them in meeting their nutrient needs so as to thrive on a plant-based diet in the long term. Along with a busy practice, Jessica has made her name as a media Dietitian with many appearances on radio, TV, social media, magazines, news articles, and more in order to promote responsible plant-based nutrition information and demystify misinformation. Jessica completed her Masters degree in nutrition through Stellenbosch University in 2017 where she focused on critical care nutrition, sports nutrition and paediatric nutrition. Her Masters research focused on pre- and post-operative nutrition practices in colorectal surgery patients at Tygerberg hospital and has since been presented at international conferences. She also has experience working as a locum at public hospitals in Cape Town, working as a research assistan and co-authoring research papers, lecturing nutrition and working as a health consultant for Discovery. Jessica recently became a mom and enjoyed a healthy vegan pregnancy and is loving creating beautiful plant-based meals for her vegan baby. Becoming a mom has reignited her passion for paediatric nutrition and she loves to help other plant-based eaters to meet their nutrient needs during pregnancy, breastfeeding, infancy, toddlerhood and beyond. NADIA MULDER

Nadia Mulder qualified as a Registered Dietitian (Bsc. Diet) from the University of Stellenbosch in 2020. Nadia is passionate about all things plant-based nutrition, intuitive eating and sports nutrition. Nadia graduated Cum Laude from Stellenbosch University in 2020 and then went on to do her community service at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria in 2021 where she gained experience in a wide range of clinical nutrition fields: from neonatal, paediatric, obstetric, orthopaedic, oncology, ICU, trauma, Covid, internal medicine, surgery to cardio thoracic. During this year, she also developed the first ever fully vegan clinical menu at a public hospital in South Africa along with a training guide on vegan nutrition for fellow dietitians at the hospital. Nadia grew up in a health-conscious family and had always had an interest in nutrition which led to her pursuing a Dietetics degree. Before she began her Dietetics studies, she undertook a gap year in the U.S. where she studied a nutrition and counselling course part-time. During this year she was confronted with a range of fad diets and nutrition misinformation and started to really wonder what the “true science” says about nutrition. She first came across the idea of a vegan diet during this year (at the age of 19) and it made sense to her from a scientific, ethical and environmental standpoint so decided to give it a try. Her energy, training and sleep improved dramatically, and she fell in love with the abundance and variety that came with a plant-based diet. She has been vegan ever since and is excited to help fellow plant-based eaters to really thrive on a vegan diet using her practical, intuitive eating-based approach to nutrition. She completed the Ellyn Satter ‘Treating The Diet Casualty’ course in 2022 which equipped her to use the eating competence model in areas of clinical care. She takes on a handful of clients at a time to help them heal their relationship with food and their bodies. Nadia also found a love for trail running and road cycling after going vegan in 2016 and has recently taken up rock climbing since moving back to Cape Town. Nadia has a special interest in sports nutrition and specifically in helping plant-based athletes to optimize performance on a plant-based diet.

Neuro-what? Let us explain...💡

🌈Neurodivergence is basically just a difference in the way your brain and nervous system processes the world around you. Autism, ADHD and Asperger's are examples of neurodivergence.

We want to create more awareness around neurodivergence and how it can impact one's relationship with food. Despite affecting a vast amount of people, it's still a topic of conversation often neglected or avoided.

🥪Everyone has a unique relationship with food, and your neurotype may play a role. This is a nuanced topic, yet lots of research is rolling out on how aspects of your relationship with food can be affected by neurocoginitive traits.

Several factors play a role:
🧠Impulsivity and/or inattention
🧠Internalised emotional distress
🧠Neurocognitive differences like sensory processing and thresholds
🧠Interpersonal conflict
🧠Societal pressure to follow social norms
🧠Differences in dopamine regulation

We are committed to relaying evidence-based and helpful nutrition information on this platform.

To help us continue the work we do (which is unpaid and in our spare time), please remember that we are humans before we are clinicians, and that requires some healthy boundaries to allow us to take care of you and ourselves 😊

It's Dezemba. A beautiful, yet chaotic time hopefully with friends and family. Summer has arrived in South Africa, and during this season we will all navigate some sort of conversation around food and/or weight and health.

Now, we’re not saying weight and food or diet are banned topics, but rather want to remind you that the way in which we engage with it can be poignant.

We wish everyone a gentle festive season💚

I’ve been having so many paediatric consults lately with babies starting solids and it’s really one of my favourite aspects of my job. So today I thought I would share a little bit about myself and my approach to feeding my babies. There’s no one right way to feed little ones but this is what works for us. I would love to hear what your questions are for us down below.
⬇️
P.s If you need more support on your baby feeding journey, I run a WhatsApp paediatric nutrition support group and also offer one-on-one consults. Comment “group” if you want me to DM you the details on how to join the group.

As Dietitians, it’s important for us to stay abreast of the latest food trends and products and be able to advise our clients on these. Today we tried the new oat milk protein drink and yoghurt alternative (not sponsored, affiliated or gifted in any way).
We are obsessed with the Buttanutt yoghurt and are making this our official petition to encourage them to calcium-fortify their products. Would you be more likely to buy their products if they were calcium fortified?

🌱 Choosing the right probiotic matters! 🌱

In our last post, we explored when and how probiotics may be helpful for certain conditions. Today, we dive into how to choose the right probiotic supplement. 🦠

Not all probiotics are created equal! Their benefits depend on:
✅specific strain(s)
✅dose
✅condition used for
🔎Knowing which strain(s) and dose to take is crucial, as effects can vary widely—even among similar products!

Remember: Probiotic supplementation recomendations will differ based on age, health conditions, and specific strains and dosages are essential to be effective.

As always, consult your healthcare provider for advice tailored to you.

Hi from me and my new little bestie 👋
Maternity leave went by in a flash, and I managed to scrape together a few half-decent pics to show you what me and my little one have been up to the last few months. Basically, lots of baby-wearing, walking, contact napping, skin to skin and breastfeeding. And of course, all of the unpictured tears, leaks, stains, burps, endless patting, rocking, and nappy changing.
All this to say, I'm back to seeing patients a couple of times a week so if you're looking for an appointment, head to the link in my bio for bookings.

Thanks to all of you who have stuck around and supported The Green Dietitian through all its transitions, including two Green babies 👶.

P.s. I hope to start posting regularly again soon, but life with 2 little kids and a practice is pretty full, so no promises for now!

P.p.s is still here too, and we are so grateful for all of her hard work keeping the practice afloat and posting semi-regularly on IG. You can also support her by booking a consult with her via the link in our bio.

Thyroid-related health issues can be attributed to various factors such as genetics, nutrition and environmental influences. 🤔

Deficiency in essential minerals can lead to decreased thyroid function due to the impact on the functioning of certain enzymes in thyroid cells.

Here's how you can support your thyroid with nutrition:

🦄CONSIDER INOSITOL
A clinical study in 2017 found that patients who received tablets containing 600 mg myo-inositol plus 83 μg selenium orally for 6 months had significantly improved thyroid function due to supporting endogenous thyroid hormone production.

🌾SELENIUM
A deficiency in selenium can lead to thyroid diseases. Selenium content in plant food is dependent on the soil content on which it was grown. This varies between countries. To ensure adequate selenium intake, you can eat a daily 25-30g of Brazil nuts or have five servings of a combination of nuts, grains, seeds, and legumes in your daily diet. If you struggle to meet requirements through diet alone, a supplement might be helpful!

🧂IODINE
Both an excess and a deficiency of iodine can lead to thyroid problems in development, growth, and metabolism. To meet your daily iodine needs, you can use half a teaspoon of iodized salt every day. Other sources of iodine include supplements or a moderate amount of seaweed.

🫐ANTIOXIDANTS
Eating a diverse diet with ample plant foods help you provide your body with plenty of antioxidants to help modulate inflammation. This is especially important for thyroiditis with an autoimmune component.

As always, consult with a registered dietitian to ensure you're receiving the right amount of these nutrients, as the recommended daily amounts can vary based on individual needs, s*x and age.
