💫 A promise to myself and my clients: I will never grow tired of relentlessly pursuing knowledge to improve my practice as a mental health professional.

I promised myself that I wanted to obtain a Master’s degree by the age of 30. Although the pathway to get to this point may not have been the one I had originally envisioned, it has lead me to use the skills I have learned to their entirety.

My Master’s research was my way of giving back and to help make the work that school counsellors do be highlighted. Hopefully, this can spark further research to emphasise the vital role played by counsellors in schools and to improve the access to mental health care in our schools in South Africa.

Here’s to never knowing enough and always being hungry for more 🪴

I am not the work that I do, but a lot of who I am is in the work I do 🤲

Working in the mental health field requires giving of yourself, often in spite of what you are also living through. It is never simply a “job” - It is a calling requiring heart, deep introspection and an honesty with yourself before you are able to help lead others to the depths of themselves they are yet to discover.

It is a privilege I bear with great responsibility and commitment: to create safe spaces for others.

🧠🌏 World Mental Health Day 2024 🌍🧠

“Creating Safe Spaces”

This year’s theme is focused on prioritising mental health in various areas of our lives where stress may be a common factor. This is associated mostly with work environments but can extend further into schools environments, clubs, sports teams, social clubs or anywhere where we spend a significant amount of our time in our day-to-day lives.

The relationships we build in the various areas of our lives are vital in creating an environment that is open to there being meaningful conversations about mental health, helping create a sense of purpose and belonging and extending understanding and kindnesses to those who struggle with their mental health.

How will you take action to promote mental health in your work, family, social club or friendship circles?

What a privilege it was to attend my third conference in Cape Town at the this past Sunday.

A particular highlight was to finally hear ’s story in person. I first attended one of her online talks during COVID and even then, her wicked sense of humour and peaceful spirit permeated the screen.

We had a host of professionals who showcased why their hearts are in the space of paedatric care - we have a wealth of knowledgable and experienced professionals in South Africa and it is our ability to adapt and not being afraid of putting in the hard work that truly sets us apart.

I was proud to be part of this representative community of child and adolescent therapists, teachers and parents.

Always a pleasure being back on the couch bright and early in the morning 🛋️ ☀️

Thank you so much for hosting me so graciously this morning, . Your energy is something I think we all would love to know the secret to tapping into this time of the year! 😂

We discussed practical ways you are able to carve out time to relax in this busy period leading up to the end of the year.

How do you find rest at this time of the year? 🤔

🗣️ Real talk incoming 👉

Your therapist is human, too.

This week, I had a colleague reflect that they could tell that I was taking strain. As a therapist, hearing that you, the one who is meant to be helping others, is the one that is not coping.

Earlier in my career, this kind of statement would have bowled me over but this week was different. When my colleague mentioned this to me, I was struck with the realisation of how important it is to be authentic within the role I play at my school organisation. The importance of also allowing others to help and support me, is a direct modelling of what students would do when seeking out help from me or their teachers. It was such an important reminder of how it feels being on the other side of the counsellor’s chair.

Yes, this week was hard, but I am still smiling knowing I have the privilege of creating safe spaces for growing minds 🧠🫶

🧠 World Mental Health Day 2023 🧠

This year’s theme for commemorating World Mental Health Day is: “Our Minds, Our Rights” ✊ (WHO, 2023)

🌱 Mental health care is a basic human right which should be easily accessible to everyone and of a high standard. These rights should also extend beyond the consultation room to other environments where individuals interact on a daily basis.

🌱 Although these sentiments are valid in theory, putting this into practice in the context of South Africa as well as globally is something that I have been reflecting on deeply over the past few weeks.

🌱 For many, the reality is that mental health care is often a luxury not only in a financial sense but also in daily practice. When a nation is fraught with inequality or you are in a country currently at war, mental health care is simply not going to be a top priority.

🌱 So yes, mental health care is a human right but it is a privilege to be able to have access to and engage in the process of psychological treatment.

👉 May we use this day as reminder to extend understanding to everyone on their journey of emotional exploration, healing and expression.
