Meet baby Ameliah π. Born on 11 June.
We met Britney and Dhivian very early in their pregnancy. They were looking at their options for birth, as Dhivian could not be present for their first birth because of COVID regulations. Many first time moms had to labor and birth without a birth partner during COVID and therefore had very bad and sometimes even traumatic memories.
After meeting and viewing the birthing home, they were convinced that it was the perfect setting to welcome their new baby. Birth partners provide comfort, encouragement, and a sense of security, which can positively impact the birthing experience and potentially reduce the need for interventions. It significantly reduce anxiety and fear during labor.
On the morning of 11 June, around 00:30, Britney sent me a message. Her water broke. At that time I had another mom in labor. After confirming that it was clear fluid, that she did not have any contractions, and baby's movements were good, I advised her get some sleep and come for a checkup in a few hours.
They came at 6am, all was well, no contractions and we discussed referral to hospital after 24 hours for prolonged ruptured membranes, if she did not go into labour by then.
They came for 2 more checkups throughout the day. When I saw them at 6pm she had a few mild contractions so I gave her some Clary sage essential oil, labor massage oil and advised her to move around so labor could progress. They went back home and an hour later the contractions started picking up and were more frequent. They arrived back at the birthing home at 10pm, 5cm dilated π. Just before Britney them arrived, another client contacted me. She had regular contractions so she was also on her way π. I prepared the second birth room and contacted Doula Lindie to come and assist me.
After Britney arrived, the contractions were very intense and very regular, so I filled up the birth pool. Lindie arrived so we alternated between the two rooms. At 23:00 Britney got into the pool.
Half an hour later we noticed she had an urge to push. She looked at me with those beautiful green-blue eyes and I just reminded her that she could do it and she should trust her body. And at 23:43 baby Ameliah was born, with daddy and grandma in the room. This time Britney was not alone. Her loved ones were present...She had so much support. And she was incredibly strong.
"A woman in birth is at once her most powerful and her most vulnerable. Birth takes a woman's deepest fears and shows her that she is stronger than them"
