On this Heritage Day in South Africa, allow me to introduce bebé Brianna💜.
Born on 11 August. Heyvi and Angel's first baby.
I will always remember the day I met them. I had a birth that morning and as I walked the new parents and their newborn out to the car, I saw Jeremy sitting with a couple in the consultation room.
They didn't have an appointment, but found Midwife by Nature online and decided to come to the birthing home, hoping to start their journey with us.
Heyvi is from Venezuela and Angel from Colombia.
Midwives have to provide culturally competent care. We learn about, and respect diverse cultural practices, beliefs, and needs.
Pregnancy truly befitted Heyvi. I swear every time I saw her she looked more beautiful. And if I asked her how she was doing, she would smile and always have a positive answer, never complained. At first there was a bit of a language barrier, but if she couldn't express herself in English, she would speak to Angel, and he would translate. But even the communication got better as the months passed☺️.
Heyvi started feeling some irregular contractions on the evening of the 9th and it intensified the next day. She would send me an update , I would give advice, and she always answered with "Ok Crystal"...By 11pm on the 10th, contractions were very frequent, so I advised them to come. When they arrived at 23:30 she was in active labour, 5cm dilated.
Heyvi was, of course, still smiling and they contacted her family via video call. They were chatting for a while before she got into the birth pool. She and Angel were joking around, eating snacks and we talked about their culture - the herbs she needs to shower with at 2 weeks post partum and staying in bed for 40 days after the birth. Midwives working in multicultural environments must be adept at understanding and respecting different cultural practices and beliefs around childbirth, ensuring that care is both respectful and effective.
"Childbirth is a culturally embedded experience, shaped by societal views on female strength, power, and the expectations surrounding it, rather than a purely physical event".
At 2am she was in transition. Contractions were intense but they were still laughing and joking. She got out of the pool a bit and laid on the bed. While on the bed, her waters released at 2:30 and shortly after, she had the urge to push.
She birthed her baby in the side-laying position. Brianna Angel was born at 3:15 ☺️
No matter where you are in the world, the arrival of new life is a beautiful process that involves patience, strength, and guidance from an experienced birth attendant.
"We have a secret in our culture, and it's not that birth is painful. It's that women are strong." ~ Laura Stavoe Harm
