Why do we fear birth?
โ€œWe are the only species of mammal that doubts our ability to give birth. Itโ€™s profitable to scare women about birth. But letโ€™s stop it. I tell women: Your body is not a lemon.โ€

Meet baby Micah๐Ÿ’œ. Born on 12 September. Anastacia and Shannon's first baby.
I met Anastacia a few years ago when she was one of her friend, Tammy's, birth companions.
>>>FF to 2025, she contacted me when she found out she was pregnant and I met her and husband Shannon for their initial appointment at 12 weeks gestation.
I always enjoyed our visits. They were very passionate about having a normal birth and trusted the natural birth process.
And after doing the My Birthing Kit - Tools for Mindful Birthing Hypnobirthing course with Kim, they were even more sure about their decision to do an out of hospital birth.
Stacey would always say that she would stay at home as long as possible and come to the birthing home in active labour, when it was time to give birth.
On the morning of 12 September, I had just had a birth, when Shannon contacted me, just after 2am. He said Stacey had a lot of pelvic pain and period cramps and wanted some advice. I told him I was at the birthing home, so they could come and I'd do some checks. But after an hour he messaged back, saying Stacey couldn't sit in the car. She was gonna relax in the bath and he'd keep me posted. After the other clients left, I told him I was gonna go sleep, but he should let me know if there's any changes.
Well, I woke up in the morning, no calls or messages, so I thought she probably fell asleep and was feeling better, and I'd check in a bit later. But just after 8am Shannon sent a WhatsApp picture....it was bulging membranes ๐Ÿ™ˆ
I immediately got ready, told them to come immediately, because she was probably fully dilated. I filled the pool and waited for them. And waited....and waited....๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…
Tried phoning....no answer. I thought OMG she's probably giving birth on the side of the road. Eventually Shannon phoned back. He was struggling to get Stacey into the car๐Ÿ™ˆ but they were on their way... Phew๐Ÿ˜…
On arrival, she was on the back seat and I could hear that it was time. I helped her out and she said she could feel something between her legs. I reached down to feel, and it was baby's head crowning.
We quickly walked to the room, Stacey got into the birth pool and with one push, baby Micah was born at 9:36. Weighing 4120g, proving that petite women can birth big babies. Stacey was in disbelief. She looked at us with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had done it!!
"When a woman feels confident in her body, well supported and able to express herself without inhibition, the pain that she may feel in labor and birth can become easily bearable and just one part of the process." ~ Sarah Buckley

Meet baby Olivia๐Ÿ’œ. Born 12 September. Marsha and Ruan 's second birth with Midwife by Nature. Olivia's brother, Elija, was the first baby born in this practice. How special is that!! Olivia was baby nr 156 โ˜บ๏ธ
When clients return for a second time, I feel the pregnancy just flies by ๐Ÿ˜„. Probably because we know one another much better, we're comfortable with one another. Antenatal appointments are more like catch up sessions. I do the checks but we catch up on what's been happening in our lives and how the babies are doing.
Its also truly amazing how different each pregnancy and birth is.
โ€œHowever much we know about birth in general, we know nothing about a particular birth. We must let it unfold with its own uniqueness.โ€ ~ Elizabeth Noble

With Elija's birth, Marsha's water broke first. Her labour started off slowly and she birthed the next day. She actually hoped that it would happen in the same sequence, but things were very different.
This time Contractions started first. Labour started on the evening of 11 August at 7pm. It started with intense back pain. She timed it and the duration and frequently was still irregular so I advised her to get some rest and time again when it becomes ones more frequent. Just after 11pm the surges were much stronger, very intense, so they made their way to the birthing home.
On arrival at 23:55 she was 5cm dilated. Marsha got into a comfortable position on the bed. On her knees, kneeling against the birth ball. And she stayed in that position. Helen, their doula, arrived shortly after, and 45min after their arrival, Marsha felt the urge to push. While in that position she trusted her body to birth her baby. Hubby by her side, Helen capturing the birth and I knelt on the floor, next to the bed, awaiting their little girl's arrival.
An hour after they arrived, at 00:56, Olivia was born. Healthy baby weighing 4035g.
Every birth is a unique journey. Your birth might be very different to a previous birth. It won't be like your mother's, or your sister's or your best friends'. It will be unique to you and your baby๐Ÿ’œ

Happy birthday to my husband Jeremy!! The man behind the midwife ๐Ÿฅฐ. My business manager, business partner, gardener ๐Ÿ˜, the one who would drop everything for me.
My biggest supporter, shoulder to cry on, the one who truly has my back till the end. The person I grow with. I'm okay with not having a group of girl friends because you are my absolute best friend!! May God bless you today and every day of your life. We love you and appreciate all you do๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

We keep getting asked: "How do I become a midwife in South Africa?"

The short answer is: You have to study Nursing first. Midwifery remains integrated into nursing here, with an optional post-graduate specialisation.

The rationale is sound: that all nurses should understand midwifery in a primary healthcare context. However, this integrated model is impacting the quality and practical experience of our midwives. For those who only want to be midwives, there is significant educational waste and a lack of focus.

Crucially, we are missing out on incredible talent because South Africa lacks direct-entry midwifery training! Many potential midwives, who don't want to be nurses, are turning to roles like Doula or other professions when they should be midwives.

*Please do study Nursing and Midwifery whilst that is the only option for now! We need you!*

Thank you to the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) and the PUSH Campaign for fighting for change. May this movement create better education pathways and recognition of midwifery as an autonomous profession in South Africa and globally.
