The iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator-Based Sciences is a multi-disciplinary research facility that is based on the development, operation and use of particle accelerators & related research equipment. The facilities provide opportunities for modern research, advanced education, the treatment of cancers and the production of unique radioisotopes. Our company's primary focus is on providing scientifically and medically useful radiation through the acceleration of charged particles using the Separated Sector Cyclotron, the Van der Graaff Accelerator and other appropriate technologies. iThemba LABS aims to be the primary centre of expertise in radiation medicine and nuclear science and technologies to advance the knowledge and health of the people of Africa.

Mr Sethosa Metuel Dipuo, an MSc-student registered at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, is conducting research on magnetic targeted drug delivery that uses bio-compatible magnetic nanoparticles that are medication loaded. He is currently making use of the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) at NRF-iThemba LABS to study the magnetic properties of his nanoparticle. His research is supervised by Dr Lebogang Kotsedi at NRF-iThemba LABS and Dr Amos Nhlapo at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. This is an example of how a national research infrastructure platform is used to advance knowledge through strategic and intentional partnerships.@

What an amazing experience to spend the morning at Hendrik Louw in Strand. Thanks Jacques Horne for facilitating access to your campus and for availing the senior student leadership (Joy, Nina, April, and Hudson) to serve as personal guides. I was able to see through their eyes as they celebrated commitment, passion, excellence, growth, and opportunities. It is clear that learning is an experience! Best wishes for 2026!
