TEACHER FEATURE : JUSTINE BARNES

Justine became aware of the mind-body connection during her many years of dancing and she yearned to take it to a deeper level.
She began exploring yoga asana over 30 years ago and was deeply drawn to the essence of the practice which is breath.
It was through the understanding of breathwork that Justine began to experience presence in her own practice. This is the essence of her approach to teaching.

Justine’s intention for each class, is to facilitate self healing by deepening the mind-body connection, through threading breath with movement.
That sense of coming back to ourselves and tapping into our own innate powerful healing.

Justine offers 3 Vinyasa classes per week, each with different themes.
The Monday 9am focuses on the purification of body and mind utilizing the Ashtanga Yoga Method - Half Led Primary
The Wednesday 9am focuses on healing the energy body in a 7 week cycle working from root to crown. Cleansing, balancing and aligning the 7 main chakra points through a vinyasa practice, pranayama, mudra, mantra and sound.
Her Friday 9am sees a fun, peak pose prep using a dynamic vinyasa flow. Sequencing is arranged around intelligent preparation to master steps towards a more intermediate or advanced pose.
All her classes include intention setting, pranayama and a guided savasana.

Janet and Justine partner to create wonderful full moon healing circles.

Justine also offers workshops mainly focused on regulating the nervous system, imprinting the rest and digest state, stimulating the vagus nerve and regulating sleep patterns.

Justine also offers 1:1 healing sessions. She offers an initial assessment to get to the “root cause” of dis-ease and then works out an individualised programme, working physically, mentally and emotionally. The focus is to assist in guiding her clients back to their essential selves.

Not only is Justine a phenomenal teacher she is a much loved friend and trusted custodian of The Yoga Sanctuary. She offers vital support and we would be lost without her.

TEACHER FEATURE : SHEONA MITCHLEY

For Sheona, yoga has provided a means to feel and acknowledge the complexities of life, giving her a broader perspective and a greater awareness of self.  Her innate love and appreciation of the yoga philosophy informs her teaching which encourages a deep connection to self, using yoga as a tool to witness our reactions and responses and initiate transformation by working with ourselves from a place of compassion and understanding.

She holds a RYT-500 Vinyasa Teaching Certification from The Shala Yoga School in Cape Town and has trained under Ana Forrest, attaining an Advanced Forrest Yoga certification. She is also a certified Yin Yoga teacher and loves to share the more subtle practices of Yin and Restorative Yoga as well as the benefits of meditation and breathwork with her students. Sheona is also a mother, nature lover and advocate for living in harmony and balance with ourselves, each other and our environment.

At The Yoga Sanctuary, Sheona teaches a beginner-friendly class and an early morning Vinyasa practice. Her classes are guided by safe, supportive alignment and clear, accessible sequencing that builds stability, cultivates balance and creates spaciousness, while fostering inner awareness and ease within.

TEACHER FEATURE : MAXINE OLMESDAHL

Maxine re-discovered yoga in her mature years, in the practice of yoga asana, pranayama, meditation and yoga nidra. Through a dedicated practice over the last decade, she has been moved by its deeply transformative and healing nature. Yoga has enabled her to find a deep sense of connection to herself and to the world, as well as mental and physical stability when in challenging times, and with the everyday humdrum. Yin and yoga nidra practices have been her anchor over the last two years.

Maxine practices and teaches utilizing the techniques in Hatha, offering classes which are detailed and alignment based, utilizing multiple props, as well as discussing the physical anatomy and the benefits to the emotional, mental and spiritual bodies.
The digestive and lymphatic systems are also hugely important to her, and movements supporting these systems are taught in her classes.
She is passionate about assisting her students to find contentment in their lives through a healthy body and an open heart.

Maxine opened the doors to The Yoga Sanctuary 4 years ago. She is honored to pass the gifts of yoga onto her students as well as all those that call The Yoga Sanctuary home.

Her belief is that once you become a student of yoga, you enter into a life-long path of studying this rich and multi-layered practice. She immerses herself daily in studying the ancient yoga texts, self-study through journaling, as well as time on her mat and meditation seat. She is also constantly upping her game through studying with the world’s finest.

“The Yoga Sanctuary turns 4 this year and I am so proud. It honors authentic yoga practices through the dedication of the teaching staff and I am so grateful to each and every member of this beautiful team.”

Maxine also offers 1:1 sessions which allow for exploration of the lymphatic and digestive systems in healing, as well as incorporating breath-work, nidra, meditation techniques and asana into these sessions.

Yoga has been her life’s biggest gift, and has given her life purpose.

TEACHER FEATURE : DARJA O’DONNELL

Darja’s love for yoga began in her mid-twenties and has been a steady companion through life’s many seasons ever since. What started as a personal practice quickly grew into a lifelong devotion, with yoga supporting her through both the highs and the challenges along the way. Over the years, she has explored and practiced a variety of yoga modalities, deepening her understanding of movement, breath, and self-inquiry.

She completed her 200-hour teacher training at The Yoga Life Cape Town in 2018, followed by her advanced teacher training at The Shala Cape Town in 2022. Darja has been teaching at various studios for the past seven years, sharing her passion and experience with a diverse range of students.

Her primary love is Vinyasa Yoga, and she is also a trained Yin Yoga teacher. She enjoys weaving Yin elements into her Vinyasa classes, creating practices that are nurturing yet strong and dynamic. Darja’s teaching emphasises mindful movement, breath awareness, and intelligent sequencing, guiding students into a moving meditation that cultivates both physical strength and inner awareness. Thoughtfully curated playlists add a creative and inspiring layer to her classes, making each flow feel fresh and engaging.

Darja’s intention is for students to leave each class feeling centred, balanced, and revitalised—more connected to their breath, their bodies, and themselves.

We are so grateful to have Darja as a member of our team. Her quiet yet powerful contribution is deeply valued by us all.

TEACHER FEATURE : JANET DAILEY

Janet spent most of her life in New York City, traversing the fashion world she was also the lead singer of “The Pleasure Bombs” in the 90’s, and found yoga as she was coming out of a period of what she refers to as the dark night of the soul.

“In a world that promotes faster is better, I am happy to hold a sacred space for all of the individuals and groups that I work with to tap into our inner peace and joy.”
Janet believes that we are all spiritual beings having a human experience.

Music will always be a big part of her life. She loves chanting and introducing students to simple seed sounds that have profound effects on our health when we vibrate in a group.

Janet is also passionate about bringing women together to support each other and our dreams, by stepping into our divine mystic feminine and releasing guilt and shame.

Janet’s group class starts with gentle stretching, including restorative yoga.
breath-work and guided savasana to end.

Janet and Justine come together to offer Full Moon Healing Circles. Circles gather under the healing energy of the full moon. Class includes breath-work to release stress, exercises that help to unblock energy channels, sound healing/mantra, and yoga nidra.

Janet also holds private Reflexology Sessions - Private
Reflexology helps to balance the body’s systems by applying pressure to specific reflex points on the feet, hands and ears.

Janet also offers Root Wisdom for Women 1:1 and Online Groups.
Root wisdom was birthed out of needing to come home to her body, and listen, during intense personal changes and transitions in her life. She draws inspiration from her womb healing training with CC Treadway and all of the many phenomenal women that have supported her from her birth.

As you can see Janet has much to offer our beloved sanctuary, and our community, and we, for obvious reasons welcomed her with open arms when she immigrated to South Africa a little over a year ago. She is a crucial figure to our teaching team.

TEACHER FEATURE : ELAINE SEIDEL

Elaine’s Yoga Journey started over 20 years ago.
Yoga always served as her therapist and confidant, for many years before her teaching journey began. It then became her greatest Joy that she could share with her students.

The depth of its teaching’s keeps Elaine constantly interested as it moves through the 4 bodies, from physical to spiritual.
Yoga breathed life back into her most challenging health experiences.

Its wisdom informed deeper layers into her teaching, which she incorporates into her Fusion Vinyasa classes. They are a combination of focused alignment via the influence of Iyengar; safe spinal movement via Synergy yoga and Tai chi-like energetic movement, woven into a graceful Vinyasa flow.

Elaine’s practice constantly teaches her how to navigate life, herself and the world better.

The world needs more people like Elaine, soft and pure in spirit, kind beyond measure and deeply guided by her own healing.
We are beyond grateful that Elaine is such a beautiful, integral part of our team.

TEACHER FEATURE: ELVIRA HATZINASIOU

Elvira is originally from Greece. Yoga is not just exercise for her, it’s a way of life and a spiritual outlet. This is the reason she chose to study it at its birthplace, Rishikesh India. Whilst there, Elvira became familiar with the traditional ways of teaching and noticed the lack of tradition in modern yoga styles.

Her offering is a well rounded Traditional Hatha practice that includes Sun Salutations, Breathwork, Kriya (cleanse), detailed postural alignment; taking in the full asana benefits by holding a pose for more than one breath.. It’s a slower practice so it’s fitting for beginners but it also offers a chance for advanced students to go deeper into their practice. All aspects of their practice. As Elvira is also a singer, she often bring aspects of Mantra and chanting into shavasana and provides a unique auditory experience.

Her classes are well scripted, authenticity is key, based off her personal practices. She is a gift to our sanctuary and we are beyond grateful to have her as part of our beloved team. 🥹
