REVIEW šŸ’„šŸ’„

The Yoga Sanctuary is truly a sanctuary that nourished me in every way - physically, mentally, emotionally, socially & spiritually. It is the most incredible & transformative yoga experience I have ever had during my 10 years of practicing yoga at many studios. The owner, Maxine, is so lovely & warm & welcoming. She is committed to each student having the most positive & fulfilling experience during every class, & I did! She has carefully chosen instructors who share her philosophy about yoga being a practice that is nourishing, healing & connecting. I cherished every moment I spent at this magical place. It was way more than a yoga studio with classes, but became my yoga home where I was grounded & strengthened on a daily basis. Most of the classes are 75 minutes which allowed me to deepen my practice in every way. My body was pain free while practicing there even though I suffer from severe arthritis, especially in my hips. It was a miracle for my body to feel so good thanks to the focus on proper alignment & the amazing personal adjustments. The vinyasa & flow classes, I can’t recommend The Yoga Sanctuary enough. Attending classes there will be a loving gift to yourself &, in turn, to everyone around you. I can’t wait to take my next class there!! Thank you for a beautiful & loving yoga retreat during my time in Cape Town. With much love & gratitude for your kindness & generosityā€

We are delighted to welcome Elvira Hatzinasiou to our teaching team ✨!

Elvira has spent many years working as an international singer, dancer and performer in Greece, the U.K. and all over the world on cruise ships. She is new to Cape Town but not to Yoga.
She found Yoga, or it rather found her, 10 years ago and she hasn’t left it since.

Mixing her deep rooted love for tradition (perhaps instilled in her by her Greek native heritage and upbringing) as well as her experience with music and dance, Elvira’s class will always be connected to breath, movement and sound and will always be anchored in authentic yogic practices, beyond just asana.

Chasing ancient wisdom and authenticity, she completed her teacher training in Rishikesh, India; the birthplace of yoga, with the holy waters of the Ganga flowing through it. Recently, she also graduated a Perinatal course and hopes to gain more knowledge in the field, in order to help more women come into their power through yoga.

Join Elvira on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7am for a Morning Practice.

ā€œI firstly want to express my joy , gratitude & admiration of been blessed to be led by the wonderful Gogo in last nights Friday Reset class .

What an amazing teacher he is , he was so knowledgeable in all the aspects he was teaching , his alignment , the interior body knowledge too , the slow vinyasa into postures , even the wonderful playlist .

His teaching method was graceful, gentle and just made the class special . You have got a great teacher with you .

The studio itself is truly lovely , small cosy & it was very intimate and peaceful last night . All the beautiful props, pretty back yard a great great space .

So šŸ’Æ out of šŸ’Æ in my heart & mind . I highly recommend you to all whom are Yoga students.

This will be a four-week program designed to give new students a well-rounded introduction to yoga and help them feel confident stepping into any class afterward.

Details of the series:

Duration: 4 weeks, 75 minutes per session

Rate: R1200 per person (Early Bird: R950)

Theme: Each week will be linked to an element and a corresponding yogic principle:
• Week 1 – Air: Breath, awareness of prana
• Week 2 – Earth: Foundations, stability in asana
• Week 3 – Water: Flow, moving with ease and connection
• Week 4 – Fire: Tapas, building heat and cultivating inner strength

Students are encouraged to attend all four sessions for the full experience. The series will cover:

Introduction to yoga, breathwork, and mindfulness

Basic foundations and key asanas

Sun Salutations and the building blocks of a modern yoga practice

How to safely and confidently explore their bodies’ potential in terms of strength, flexibility, and longevity

Tools for relaxation, stress release, and overall wellbeing through mindful movement

The aim is that by the end of the series, participants feel more at home in their bodies, have a basic understanding of yoga’s physical and non-physical benefits, and know how to practice safely and intuitively for their individual needs.

Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher | Somatic Decolonial Practitioner

For Gogo Khanyakude, yoga doesn’t start with perfect poses - it begins with the breath. Not as an order, but as a gentle invitation.
A registered yoga teacher and mindfulness coach, their teachings help people find their way back to their bodies - a radical act in a world that’s taught us to disconnect.

Colonialism messed with our heads, made us see our bodies as things to use or fix. But in Gogo’s classes, every mindful breath is a small act of defiance. We’re done living only in our thoughts. We’re taking back the right to feel good in our skin. We honour that this homecoming isn’t easy - it takes courage.

This isn’t just yoga - it’s embodied freedom. Not just exercise, but taking back what’s yours.

Gogo’s Ukudloza approach mixes trauma-aware yoga with Southern African healing wisdom, creating spaces where every pose is a conversation - ā€œHow does this breath feel today? Where are you feeling tight?ā€ Turning inward isn’t escape - it’s asking ā€œIs this tension really mine, or something I’ve been carrying for others?ā€ Rest isn’t lazy - ā€œYou don’t have to push. Their classes are all about safe spaces for q***r and Black bodies often left out of mainstream yoga. There’s real choice - ā€œYou can stop any pose. You know your body best.ā€ And rooted mindfulness that respects yoga’s Indian origins while weaving in African ancestral wisdom.
