Infants choking first aid

Infant Choking:

How To Help

Choking is especially common in young children, but a person of any age can choke. Choking occurs when the airway becomes either partially or completely blocked by a foreign object, such as a piece of food or a small toy; by swelling in the mouth or throat; or by fluids, such as vomit or blood. A person who is choking can quickly become unresponsive and die, so it is important to act quickly.

Children younger than 5 years are at particularly high risk for choking. Infants and toddlers explore by putting things in their mouths and can easily choke on them. Even some common foods can be choking hazards in young children.

Emergency Steps

Check the scene safety, form an initial impression, obtain consent and put on PPE, as available.

Check for signs and symptoms.

Weak or no cough*
High-pitched squeaking noises or no sound*
Pale or blue skin color*
Unable to cough or cry*
Panicked, confused or surprised appearance*
*Note: Signs and symptoms with a * require immediate emergency medical treatment.

Call 9-1-1 and get equipment if the person requires immediate emergency medical treatment.

Give Care.

General Care: Choking Infant
Position infant face-down along your forearm using your thigh for support.
Keep the infant's head lower than their body.
Give 5 firm back blows.
Use the heel of the hand to strike between the shoulder blades.
Turn the infant face-up with their head lower than their body.
Give 5 quick chest thrusts.
Chest thrusts should be about 1 ½ inches deep.
Continue giving 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts.
Continue until the infant can cough or cry or becomes unresponsive.
If the infant becomes unresponsive, lower them to a firm, flat surface and begin CPR (starting with compressions) according to your level of training.
Trained responders: After each set of compressions and before attempting breaths:
Open the infant's mouth.
Look for an object.
If seen, remove it using your pinky. NEVER do a pinky sweep unless you actually see the object.!

Did you know ....

In 2009, ‘Mother and Baby Magazine’ fulfilled a Save A Life Survey; after this survey was conducted it showed that a massive 82% out of 2’000 questioned parents with young children would not know what to do if their child started choking, was burned or even stopped breathing, etc.

A survey found that in the event of a child choking 53% of parents would try to get the object out using their fingers; however placing fingers into the airway could cause damage!

Tell us what your views or reactions would be should you be witnessing an infant or child choking .

Note: overhydration

Overhydration is caused by drinking too much fluids, which causes water toxicity, an electrolyte imbalance, that can cause nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness and spasms.

In severe cases, symptoms could include confusion, seizures and unconsciousness may develop.

To prevent overhydration, use your thirst cues and urine color as a simple guide. Only drink fluids when you are thirsty, and until your urine color is light yellow to clear.

A decent first aid kit is a household must-have. Many kits on offer promise to stock everything you might need, but I'm sure you would want to assemble your own to your own needs or environment.

Here are some first aid kit essentials.

A first aid kit consists of medical supplies used to help stabilise a person who is sick or injured until they can be treated by a trained healthcare provider like a nurse, paramedic or doctor. You can also use these emergency supplies to treat minor illness or injuries that don’t require advanced medical care, like indigestion, headaches, minor scrapes and insect bites.

Whether you’re buying one and enhancing it, or building your own from scratch, here’s a list of basic supplies your kit should contain.

Equipment to consider including in your kit
A thermometer
Plasters of different sizes
Antiseptic ointment to prevent infection in minor cuts and abrasions
Gauze
Disinfectant
Bandages
A topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory gel, cream or spray
Products for burn care
Scissors
Tweezers
Wound-closing strips

let us provide with a first aid kit best suited for your office, workshop, home or outdoor activity, feel free to contact us on whatsapp on 061 449 0358
