13 Days to go!
Today we’re looking at water and cooking.
Some legs of the trail have easily accessible water sources en route, on others, you have to dig to find your water depending on the time of year.
We trialed the Sawyer Mini filtration system on our Cederberg hike and it was easy and quick to use. We will also carry water purification drops for the more stagnant water sources that we may not have the opportunity or resources to boil first.
For cooking, we found a super convenient fold up pot/cup/bowl set that fits together as one unit. Its convenience makes it worth the carry despite it being slightly on the heavy side. Both of our collapsible bowls and cups fit into the one collapsible cooking pot.
Our trail guide said we should aim to carry 2 gas canisters to last the 6 days cooking and water boiling requirements for 2 people, they are surprisingly heavy when weight concerns are a priority, but as they are essential, nothing we can do in this regard!
Next- bush showers!!
Since an encounter with a croc is a valid concern (google the croc attack on the recent Leg 5 TKT expedition!🙈), a pocket shower is the way to go. Super light, small and easy to carry. We looked at a collapsible bucket but this is just a more pleasant option in my opinion! When water availability doesn’t allow for it, body wipes are the go-to. The guides will also indicate the “safe to submerge” water sources should this leg 1 expedition take us across any.
The excitement is building now!
