We’re excited to welcome Dr Melissa Crestani (chiropractor) to the WL team!

Dr. Melissa Crestani graduated with a Master’s Degree in Chiropractic from the Durban University of Technology.

She is passionate about patient education and helping patients live a healthy, pain-free life so that they can get back to enjoying all the adventures that our beautiful Cape Town has to offer.

Although Dr. Melissa treats all neuro-musculoskeletal conditions, she has a keen interest in dry needling and treating patients with tension and headaches.

Dr. Melissa’s holistic approach to health and chiropractic treatment allows for muscle release techniques such as massage and dry needling, joint manipulation, and mobilisations. All treatments are carefully tailored to each patient and aimed at treating the cause of the problem and not just the symptoms.

Whether your goal is to get back to running, surfing, cycling, or getting out of bed without back or neck pain, chiropractic care is a drug-free, alternative approach to get you back to doing all the activities you love most.

Yesterday, our beloved practice manager, Moenierah, passed away. We are all heart broken. She came to WL, following the death of her husband, almost 2 years ago. Her life was a shining example of how gracefully one can overcome adversity. No matter what challenges she faced, she was always gentle, always kind. A rare soul that will be missed by all of us at WL. Our condolences to her family. 🌼🌼🌼

Inadequate consumption of prebiotics can cause imbalances in our gut micro biome

For every gram of fiber we eat, we can increase our stool by nearly two grams, due to the fiber fermentation process in our colon. Why should we care how much we p**p as long as we aren’t constipated? Well, larger bowel movements are associated with lower risk of appendicitis, colon cancer, and diverticulitis. By weight, the bulk of our stool is pure bacteria, trillions and trillions of bacteria. Fiber is what our good gut bacteria thrive on, their fuel source. When we eat whole plant foods, like fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains, we are telling our gut flora to be fruitful and multiply.

During the fiber fermentation process, our gut flora produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), which are an important source of energy for the cells lining our colon. So, we feed our flora with fiber, and they turn around and feed us right back. These SCFA help suppress inflammation and cancer. You can learn more about SCFA here: https://bit.ly/3u9O01w

When we don’t eat enough whole plant foods, we are, in effect, starving our microbial selves. A typical Western diet, one lacking in whole plant-based foods, results in dysbiosis, an imbalance where bad bacteria can take over and may increase our susceptibility to inflammatory diseases, colon cancer, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, or cardiovascular disease. See the video "Gut Dysbiosis: Starving Our Microbial Self" http://bit.ly/2G8y1fm to learn more.

**The Importance of Post - Workout Stretches**

MOVEMENT is your human right! .
But it is our responsibility that we make the effort to get moving..

Healthy adults should be making a point of getting at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity every week. That's just 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week!

Most of us need to be more active and fit. The first step may include slowly introducing an exercise regime into your daily routine. This is a great start! But it is important to finish your exercise routine correctly.
A few minutes of simple and gentle 'cool-down' exercises such as stretches can make a huge difference in how well your body responds to your new routine.

Here's why:
* Stretching helps to prevent post-workout injuries
* Stretching gets rid of Toxins
* Stretching brings your heart rate down gently

Neglecting post-workout stretches is a common mistake when you are not used to exercising. Make sure you do the correct stretches or seek proper guidance to ensure that you get the maximum benefits from your workout without any unwanted post-workout side effects.

Happy exercising 💪

We are so excited to welcome an excellent Physiotherapist to our team: Yeshodha Naidoo!

Yeshodha holds an Honours Degree in Physiotherapy and has a Masters in Early Childhood Intervention. She has gained experience in both the public, private, and educational settings of physiotherapy.

Yeshodha believes in a holistic approach to treatment intervention, placing the client first and taking into account all other factors, rather than treating just the condition.
She believes that listening to her client’s needs is key to successful outcomes. By doing so, every client is seen and treated as an individual, in which their goals, experiences, and abilities are incorporated into the treatment plan to ensure that they can have the best possible recovery.

Clients of all ages are treated, but she particularly enjoys treating children. She uses a variety of physiotherapy treatment techniques to improve treatment outcomes and believes the most important form of treatment is client education – encouraging client participation from the start and empowering them to be part of their own recovery.

She offers Physiotherapy at the White Lotus in Cape Town, for both adults and children. Other than her private practice, she also operates from schools and early development centers. In instances where the client is unable to travel to her practice in Cape Town, home visits are available in and around the surrounding CBD area.

For more information and to schedule an appointment with Yeshodha, you can contact our Practice Manager on (021) 4220011 or info@whitelotus.co.za
