A high percentage of the population experience neck pain at some point in their lives, especially office workers.
Fortunately, there is an emerging trend of increasing your daily activity, increasing the movement in the office and working from home which encourages more freedom of movement.
If you're suffering with neck pain with or without arm pain, it's helpful to be assessed and treated by a physiotherapist or other health care professional so that you can get back on track with moving and exercising!
Give us a call or email info@bodymoves.co.za to make an appointment or enquire about joining the pilates classes.

In a recent study, it was found that 76% of the global population have some degree of osteoarthritis (OA). That is a large percentage of the population and it creates a burden on the global health system.

With a multidisciplinary team approach involving doctors, physiotherapists, biokineticists, orthotists and dieticians, this condition can be managed and a patients' activities of daily life can be optimized.

At Body Moves, we have experienced physiotherapists and pilates classes to help manage this chronic condition and we work closely with a network of doctors and orthotists who are part of our larger multidisciplinary team.

1/3 of people over the age of 65 fall on a yearly basis. This can range from minor falls to severe falls with resulting consequences.
It has been found that increasing your activity level, strength and balance decreases your chance of falling.
Being stronger and more agile also contributes to less severe consequences and injuries if you do happen to fall. If you are stronger, you can more easily help yourself to get up again!

Balance exercises can easily be done at home with support of a chair or table nearby. Increasing the amount you move includes walking, gardening, shopping and home exercises such as calf raises, lunges and stretches.

In our pilates classes we strive to include balance and flexibility training as well as strengthening. Most classes involve getting down to the floor and up again!

Why not join in for a class and kick start your summer with improved strength and balance?

Most people will experience an episode of shoulder pain in their lifetime. It could have been caused by a fall or an injury or due to a sport requiring extensive overhead movement... or by none of these. The shoulder is a complex joint which has a large range of movement and requires a unique relationship to the adjacent joints, muscles and ligaments as well as the neck and upper back areas.

It is important to try to find the structure causing pain and then to address it through treatment, exercise and lifestyle adjustments (there is a strong link between chronic shoulder pain and smoking, alcohol use and diabetes).

Give us a call or make a booking to have your shoulder pain addressed.

At Cheryl Moolman Physiotherapists we work closely with orthopaedic spinal surgeons and therefore see a number of lower back pain cases.
Lumbar radiculopathy is commonly seen presenting with leg pain and/or numbness with or without back pain.

There are many causes of lower back pain and radiculopathy and each patient is different. Some may know exactly what triggered it and others may have a more complex history.

Similarly, treatment differs, but it is generally accepted that conservative treatment is tried first. If that fails (leg pain is unchanged or the patient is functionally impaired) then surgical options are explored, with great results!

Bunions (aka hallux valgus) are incredibly common and range from being painless to very inflamed and painful. They are a complicated condition to treat that involves more than just the big toe.

Orthotics can help reduce pressure and correct the biomechanics of the foot and Physiotherapists can guide rehab and strengthening of the intrinsic muscles of the foot, increase mobility of the calf and correcting gait deviations.

Surgery is also done with many different techniques to correct the structure of the foot.

Increasing your mobility has many benefits for your physical and mental health
* preventing injuries of joints and tendons
* releasing built-up tension in muscles (hello, stress relief!)
* improving the quality of specific movements and posture
* increasing body awareness

What is the best way to increase mobility?
Always use a graded approach. Start where you are and slowly incorporate movements that gently challenge your range of motion.
Don't stretch if your muscles or environment are cold and incorporate dynamic movements instead of static positions.
Incorporate strength training. Mobility and strength go hand in hand.
Ask someone qualified to help you improve your mobility, whether it's a physiotherapist, biokineticist or personal trainer.
