Liudmyla Shulga Somatic Psychologist

Liudmyla Shulga Somatic Psychologist I am a certified body-oriented gestalt therapist, psychologist. I am helping people to cope with traumatic events though therapeutic conversation and movement.

Somatic psychology (i.e. body-oriented) is there to help to people who experience:

* stressful or traumatic events
* suffer from insomnia/nightmares
* lack of energy
* panic attacks
* difficulty concentrating
* chronic pain (fibromyalgia)
* post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Sometimes «talk it through» is not enough. There is a need to bring balance to your autonomic nervous system.

I am missing my boys ❤️🥰

Me and my friend had a conversation about traveling yesterday: it feels good to leave and it feels good to come back.

Traveling makes you happy twice. If you stay in one place, feeling of home is replaced with the feeling boredom.

Are you traveling somewhere now? Even if it is another camping site or a town nearby. If so, name a place in the comments 🥰🙌🌟

What’s the actual secret to happiness? Great memories! 🥰🌟

I would love to recommend you a lovely book by Meik Wiking.

He conducted research on happiness and how to make best memories ever. This book is more than dry facts. He shares some of his own experiences and personal stories.

Easy read to support your mental health. Especially now, when summer is approaching Cape Town 😍☀️👙

Right now I am creating some memories here, in Portugal and will share my experiences after the trip ❤️🌟

I love to stop and observe the details. Some colours look soooo tasty to me, like this glazed leaf.

In general I find this trip very sensual. Eyes, taste buds are constantly stimulated.

Vagus nerve has quite some job to do to absorb all new information and by the evening I get tired.

And than camomile is my best friend 🌟😜🙌

Each ethnicity has its own characteristics and this is how we learn to differentiate between different groups of people.

But this can also be a source of trouble. Through the body we translate ideas and behaviour patterns:

👉Some diseases that run in the families are not hereditary but are developed as the consequence of certain behaviours family members pass on. For instance, diabetes, heart diseases, colitis, etc.

👉We decide what we do to our bodies based on our belief system. For instance: Am I allowed to have a blood transfusion? Am I allowed to have pleasure? Is it a sin?

👉Do I have the right to my body or does the government or other institutions or people can override my decisions?

🌍The concept of body does not stop there and expands further:

🧠I think, therefore I am (Descartes)

🧳The chief function of the body is to carry the brain around (Edison)

❤️I feel, therefore I am (Damasio)

🇺🇳Your body is part of - an extension of - the nation (Hi**er, putin)

The big question is: How do you chose to live in your body as a
🌟 person who has the body?

🌟 person who has power over someone’s body? Maybe your child’s, your patient, etc?

🌟 person who is powerless to change something about own body?

I am exploring such things with my clients in therapy.

Sometimes we discover that SORROW that lives on the surface is deeply rooted in a survival mode of a whole nation multiplied by the belief system of the family.

Sometimes we have to dive in deep. But that makes diving OUT even better.

Have you ever thought about body that way? Pls do share in the comments ⬇️

Bodynamic is a wonderful method of developing our resources to cope with the challenges we have in life.

From the day we are conceived till the age of 12, we go through certain developmental stages. Bodynamics identifies 7 of them.

During each phase we learn something new: grabbing, walking, talking, reaching out, keeping our boundaries, etc.

Depending on what and how we grasped that new knowledge, we develop a certain type of character structure.

Character structure is coded in muscles therefore it changes our posture and shape of our body.

If something goes wrong during that phase we bypass the development of some resources that help us move through life easier.

Good news - we can have them back!

Have you heard about character structures before? Can you relate to one of 7 questions? Let me know! ⬇️

How would you feel had you become Queen at the age of 24? With all that responsibility for countries and human lives? International affairs?

I’d be terrified, for sure.

Some people adored her, others hated, no one was indifferent.

She was brave, had a sense of humour and invented Instagram-like marketing decades before Instagram was invented 🤣

She converted empire into commonwealth while Putin is doing exactly the opposite. And look where it takes us all…

I guess we can all agree that for better or worse, an era came to an end. How does it make you feel when you find yourself amidst the change?

An era is gone. Long and prosperous be the new one?

Don’t know about you but I felt a bit anxious today without the mask 😷🤦‍♀️ I am so happy we don’t have to wear them any more.

I remember how it was difficult at the beginning not to see each other’s faces. I could not understand the facial expressions!

But today I was pulling my neck a bit in 😳 a new body pattern must be unlearned.

How was your experience?

It doesn’t matter if one believes in resurrection of Mr J.

What really matters is the concept of love and care that this person brought into the world.

Humanistic approach that some societies are still failing to practice.

The biggest teaching we received is that no matter how many time one kills, love is eternal. Love is always coming back. Love always resurrects.

Today I have been pushed to the limits only to find that my mental character structure gives me sensitivity and makes the way I experience life more unique.

I have also confirmed once again that I am a survivor and fight till the end for my right for existence.

I am learning how to be in this world without fight and I achieved some good results. But today I received the missing part: it shouldn’t always be from inside out. For me, it is from outside in that does the trick.

Today is a Good Friday to commemorate the death of a body. While I am at the training to bring body back to life.
Indeed, everything is dynamic in the world around us, in the body & in the psyche.

Modern DNA tests can provide information about your ancestors 5-9 generations back.

Recent studies show that we can go back in time even further - about 14 generations.

With that DNA we pass on body memories. Our environment, upbringing, family and personal beliefs will activate certain genes and not the others.

I have studied family systems and generational trauma as a psychologist focusing on trauma. From this work I gained some insight into myself and gained resources.

At this phase of life I want to return the favor. The minimum I can do is to start narrating my cultural background.

In this I hope for two things. One is to have better grounding in SA with my true identity. Second is to talk about Ukrainian generational trauma and coping strategies, some of which are (not surprisingly) similar to SA.

Did you know that generational trauma impacts body types and how we physically carry ourselves though this life?

Psychoeducation sandwich I couldn't eat 🤣
Must you be honorable enough to get your degree? Why bachelors’ doesn't do?

No two countries or societies are the same. Just sharing my confusion because now I can laugh about it and it might be useful for other eastern europeans (and their partners 😉).

If you are a foreigner here, pls share your experience in the comment 🙌 If you are south african - just give me a supportive smiley face

Body/somatic psychology in a nutshell.

We recently visited the Dwarsberg Trout Hideaway farm - a lovely place! On one of the days we decided to walk on the dam.

While I was walking at that high I could sense buzzy feeling in my bum 🌀🤣🍑 I couldn’t even walk properly!

That's a normal body reaction to stress. The sensations disappeared when I moved to a safer location, but sometimes that doesn't happen: when we move away from events and circumstances, the body doesn't register that the situation is over and keeps holding tension.

It's not possible to live with that buzzing feeling forever. To make you feel more comfortable, your body hides it.

However, the energy that was generated keeps using your vitality in the background. In the long run, that can lead to anxiety, panic attacks, and chronic diseases, etc.

To mitigate the consequences there are special tools that help your body to process your emotions.

Any questions are welcomed in the comments 🙌
