In healthcare, it is paramount for patient and practitioner safety for professional bodies to monitor, progress, and implement processes to maintain their members' ethical and professional practice. Without a professional body, practitioners feel unseen and overlooked, which may lead to poor performance, minimal professional growth opportunities, and professionals choosing to leave the profession.

The ODA profession originated during World War I, but grew significantly in World War II when the UK utilised them to assist surgeons on the battlefield.

Informal training of Operating Theatre Technicians started in 1947 at St Thomas Hospital and in 1948 they were recognised as a category in healthcare.

What is a non-nursing Scrub Practitioner?

We are healthcare professionals trained in all things operating theatre this includes:
- Reprocessing of instruments and linens
- Receiving patients for theatre
- Expert abilities in the circulator, anaesthetic, and scrub roles during the surgical procedure
- Recovery of the surgical patient *
- Management of the operating theatre *

We often have no traditional nursing qualification and can work in operating theatre departments, procedure rooms in private practices, as surgical sales representatives, clinical support specialists, medical administrators, and many more.

*Multiple changes to the coursework were made over time, earlier courses did not contain these modules.
