Today we celebrate the nurses of Helderberg Hospice. The ones who hold a hand when words aren't enough, and who carry the weight of their patients' hardest days with extraordinary grace. Nursing in palliative care asks more than most people realise. It asks you to show up fully, every single day, for people and families navigating some of the most profound moments of their lives.

To our entire nursing team: thank you. What you do matters more than we can say! Happy International Nurses Day.

Families let us know that they want to keep their loved one at home for as long as possible and we do our best to help make that happen.

Caring for someone who is seriously ill at home requires the right equipment from hospital beds, mobility equipment, specialised mattresses and comfort support. These are not luxuries. They are what make safe, dignified home care possible.

Our equipment rental and loan service provides what families need so that the choice between proper care and staying home never has to be made, because home is where many people want to be.

If someone you love is living with a serious illness, support exists. Real, practical, compassionate support, right here in the Helderberg: www.helderberghospice.org.za | 021 852 4608

What does APCC accreditation mean for you and your loved ones?
It means every staff member is palliative care trained. It means rigorous quality standards - independently verified. It means you can trust that care is delivered safely and consistently.
This Hospice Week, we celebrate Helderberg Hospice Palliative Care, recipients of a 5-Star COHSASA accreditation in 2024, a milestone that reflects years of unwavering commitment to excellence in patient care.
All APCC members hold a Letter of Good Standing to assure you of the quality of their services. Find an accredited hospice near you: apcc.org.za/hospice-week-2026

Most people only hear about hospice when things are already at a breaking point. But Helderberg Hospice has been here for 40 years, offering something far greater than crisis care.
We are a palliative care organisation. That means that our focus is your quality of life: pain management, symptom control and a specialist team that comes to you, into your home and your life, during one of the most difficult seasons a family can face.

We are not here to replace your doctor, we are here to fill any spaces in care that you and your loved ones experience.

🧶 16,612 squares and counting!
As of 30 April 2026, our Squares for Care campaign has collected 16,612 crocheted and knitted granny squares from contributors across South Africa. Every single one represents someone who chose to give their time, their hands, and their heart to support patients in our care. We are genuinely moved by the response.

A very special thank you to Hoërskool Strand for their incredible contribution of 2,285 squares toward this total. That is community in action.

None of this happens without the generous support of our yarn and wool donors:

Behind every comfortable patient room is a team working quietly in the background to make sure everything is in good order.

Our maintenance team keeps our support centre running safely and with dignity. From equipment checks to repairs, their work is not visible to most people who walk through our doors, but it shapes the experience of every patient who stays with us.

Quality hospice and palliative care is not only delivered by nurses and social workers; it is built into every corner of Helderberg Hospice, by every person on our team.

When someone you love is seriously ill, the people around them carry a weight that rarely gets named. The exhaustion of caregiving. The uncertainty of not knowing what comes next. The grief that begins long before a loss occurs.

Helderberg Hospice works with families as well as patients. Our social workers provide structured support to caregivers and family members throughout their hospice journey, offering guidance on practical decisions, emotional processing, and what to expect at each stage of care. Bereavement support continues after a patient passes. Our team stays in contact with families during the period that follows, because we know that the hardest moments do not always arrive while care is still active.

You will not be left to figure this out alone. That is not a promise we make lightly. It is built into how our care is structured: www.helderberghospice.org.za

When a loved one is admitted to our support centre, it is not only the clinical team who makes a difference. It is the people who greet them each morning, keep their space clean and comfortable, and notice when something feels off.

Our housekeeping and carer staff are a steady, familiar presence for patients and families during what is often a very uncertain time. They show up every day with consistency and warmth, and that matters more than most people realise.

"Does medical aid cover hospice?" It is one of the first questions families ask us.
The honest answer is: it depends. Medical aid coverage for hospice and palliative care in South Africa varies widely depending on your scheme, your plan level, and the services you need.

Some medical aids contribute towards palliative nursing visits, pain and symptom management, and in-patient hospice stays. Others may exclude palliative care entirely or include it only under specific chronic illness or hospital benefits.
Read our full guide on medical aid and hospice coverage, or contact us directly and we will help you work through the details: https://helderberghospice.org.za/are-hospice-services-covered-by-medical-aid/
