Coloring your hair is a great way to upgrade your look. With proper care, hair dye can last a long time. If you don't take good care of your hair, however, even the best dye job can fade quickly. Knowing how to take care of color treated hair is important. Not only will it help the color last longer, but it will also ensure that your hair stays healthy and strong.

Part 1 of 3:

Washing Your Hair

Wait 72 hours after dyeing before you wash your hair again. One of the biggest mistakes people make is washing their hair too soon after dyeing their hair. After you wash the dye out from your hair for the first time, let your hair dry naturally, then leave it alone for 72 hours. If you wash your hair before then, you risk the dye fading.

You can use clarifying shampoos before coloring your hair, not after. They strip color too.

Use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners made for color-treated hair. Just because something is labeled for color-treated hair does not necessarily mean that it is good for your hair. Sulfates are harsh cleaning agents that cause hair to turn dry and brittle. They can also cause dye to fade quickly from your hair.

If you want to keep your hair healthy and vibrant, then any products that you use must be sulfate-free.

Most labels will state whether or not the product is sulfate-free. If the label does not say anything, check the ingredients for anything that contains the word "sulfate."

If you dyed your hair blonde, choose a sulfate-free blue or purple shampoo to keep it from turning brassy.

Keep punk colors vibrant by adding some dye to white conditioner. If you dye your hair an unnatural color, such as pink, blue, purple, or green, consider adding a few drops of your dye into your bottle of conditioner. Shake the bottle up so that the dye is distributed evenly. Each time you use your conditioner, you'll deposit a small amount of dye into your hair.

Don't let anyone else in your household use it—otherwise they'll end up with colored hair!

Only use white conditioner, otherwise you may end up with a different hair color than you desire. For example, if you mix blue dye into yellow conditioner, it will turn green.

Be aware that some of the dye may come off on your skin when you use it. Be sure to rinse your hair well afterwards so that you don't stain your towels.

Wash your hair no more than 2 or 3 times a week. This may sound less than ideal, but there really is no need to wash your hair more often than that. Not only does frequent washing fade color faster, but it can also cause your hair to dry out.

If your hair tends to get oily, use a dry shampoo on your no-wash days to soak up excess grease.

Wear a shower cap whenever you take a shower without washing your hair. This will keep your hair dry and preserve its color.

Use cool to lukewarm water when you wash your hair. Cold water would be the best, but you can use lukewarm water if you can't take the cold. Do not use hot water, however. Not only will this cause your color to fade faster, but it will also leave your cuticle open, causing the color to fade.

Wash and rinse each color separately if you have multicolored hair. This is especially important if you recently dyed your hair bright colors, such as blue, green, and purple. If you try to wash all your hair all at once, you risk the colors blending together. Separate the colors in your hair, then wash and rinse them individually to avoid color transfer.

Part 2 of 3:

Drying and Styling Your Hair

Allow your hair to dry naturally whenever possible. If you must use a hairdryer, apply a heat protectant and focus the heat on the roots. If you have curly hair, consider drying your hair using the plopping method instead. This is where you plop your hair on top of your head and wrap a T-shirt or microfiber towel around it.

Do not sleep with wet hair. Going to sleep with wet hair can lead to damage and breakage, so plan ahead when you wash your hair. Make sure that you give your hair enough time to dry before bedtime. If you must go to sleep while your hair is still wet, braid it first.

Don't pull your hair into a bun or ponytail before going to sleep, even when it is dry. This will damage your hair further.

Use heat protectants and low heat when you dry or heat-style your hair. This is a must, regardless of whether you are blow-drying, curling, or straightening your hair. High heat can damage your hair (especially if you bleached it first) and cause the color to fade faster. If you are going to straighten or curl your hair, be sure to blow-dry it first.

Apply the heat protectant before you blow-dry, curl, or straighten it.

Embrace your natural hair texture. Heat-styling tools, such as flat irons and curling irons, can damage your hair, even if you use a heat protectant. Learn to love your natural hair texture, or find no-heat alternatives to straightening or curling it. Use heat tools only for special occasions.

Use foam hair rollers in damp hair to create curls .

Braid your hair while it is wet to create waves.

Part 3 of 3:

Keeping Your Hair Healthy

Use hair masks once per week instead of conditioner. You can use store-bought masks or make your own using natural ingredients, such as coconut oil or shea butter. Apply the mask to damp hair, then tuck your hair under a shower cap. Wait for the time recommended on the label or recipe, then rinse the mask out.

Look for masks made for bleached or color-treated hair. Nourishing, deep-conditioning, or reparative masks are also a great option.

Most hair masks do not contain sulfates, but double-check the ingredient label.

Make your hair masks more effective by heating them first. You can do this with store-bought masks and homemade masks, including coconut oil. Heat the mask in a small dish in the microwave for 5 to 10 seconds, then use it accordingly. Alternatively, you can stick a bottle of conditioner in a large cup of hot water for a few minutes.

Apply the hot mask or oil to your hair. Tuck your hair under a shower cap, then wrap the cap with a warm towel. Wait 15-20 minutes before rinsing the treatment out.

Alternatively, you could apply a room-temperature mask to your hair, put on a shower cap, then sit under a hooded dryer for 15-20 minutes for a deeper conditioning treatment.

Continue to use your usual products if you have natural hair. Naturally curly or African-American hair is delicate and prone to damage, so it requires a little extra care. When you dye your hair, you shouldn't give up those other conditioning treatments and moisturizing creams. Keep using them as you normally would, but make sure that they do not contain any sulfates.

Wear your hair in protective styles as much as possible, such as cornrows or braids.

Protect your hair against the elements. Cover your hair with a hood, hat, or scarf whenever you step outside, especially if it is bright and sunny outside. If you don't like covering your head, apply a UV protection spray to your hair before stepping outside.

Cover your hair with a swim cap before getting into a pool. If you don't want to wear a swim cap, rinse your hair with plain water first, then apply some conditioner. It would be even better if you wait 20 minutes before stepping into the pool, so your hair can absorb the conditioner. Once you are done swimming, rinse your hair immediately.

Trim your hair regularly to keep it healthy. Plan on trimming hair every couple of weeks. How often you do this depends on how fast your hair grows and how healthy it is. If your hair starts to look ragged at the ends, it's time for another trim.

Take breaks from bleaching or dyeing your hair. The more you bleach or dye your hair, the more porous it will become, meaning it won't hold onto dye very well. If you notice that your hair color is fading or that your hair is starting to look fried, it's time to take a break. Let your hair grow out to its natural color.

If your roots are beginning to show, try a root touch-up kit instead of re-dyeing your hair.

Another option is to use a gloss every so often. It is not as damaging as hair dye and will revitalize your hair color.

Consume vitamins that are essential to hair health. Vitamin C is found in things like citrus, and helps keep your scalp healthy. Biotin is found in carrots, eggs (yolks), and salmon. It helps make your hair strong and glossy. If you cannot eat the foods that contain these 2 vitamins, then supplements are always an option.

Washing your hair with rice water is a cheap, easy, and effective way to improve the look and health of your hair. Rice water contains a particular carbohydrate that reportedly minimizes follicle damage and increases the shine, strength, and length of your hair. You can use rice water as a weekly hair treatment, or rinse with it every time you shampoo. Whether you purchase rice water from the store or make it yourself at home, it is simple to incorporate it into your hair-washing routine!

Method 1 of 3:

1 Making Your Own Rice Water by Soaking

Purchase some rice. While any type of rice will work, the most frequently used are white rice or long-grain brown rice. Whatever you have in the house is fine!

• Measure out ½ cup of rice and rinse it to remove any dust or impurities.

2 Combine the rice with 2-3 cups of water in a bowl. Set the bowl aside on the counter and wait!

• Soak the rice in the water for about 15-30 minutes. Let your rice soak until the water takes on a milky, semi-opaque appearance. That milky appearance indicates that some of the rice's inositol has been released into the water.

Inositol is a carbohydrate that gives rice water its milky appearance. When used on your hair, some research suggests that inositol helps protect your locks and add shine.

• Stir the rice water a couple of times while it soaks. Use a spoon or fork to break up any clumps of rice.

• Once the water has a cloudy or milky look to it, it should be good to go.

3 Strain out the rice and set the water aside. Double check to make sure that the water does not have any lingering rice in it.[4]

Another way to do this is to boil the rice/water mixture. Just follow the same steps as soaking, but use slightly more water and strain out the rice once the water starts to boil. Allow it to cool to room temperature before using.

• Transfer the rice water into a decorative or practical container. It is now ready to use!

Method 2 of 3:

1 Washing Your Hair with Rice Water

Shampoo your hair as usual. Be sure to rinse completely with warm water. You may follow with your normal conditioning routine, or apply the rice water directly after shampooing. Try each method to see what works best for you.

• If you don’t usually wash your hair every day or have dry hair to begin with, you may want to skip the shampoo and proceed directly to the rice water.

2 Soak your hair with rice water after rinsing. Use a cup or a squeeze bottle to apply the rice water to your scalp. Then, thoroughly work it into your scalp and down the length of your strands.

• You do not necessarily need to be in the bath or shower to apply the rice water. In fact, many people soak their hair over a basin or sink. It’s up to you!

• Leave the rice water in your hair for 20-30 minutes. This allows the inositol in the rice water to fully coat each strand. After you rinse out the rice water, your hair will have a thin layer of inositol coating each strand, helping protect it from damage and breakage.

3 Rinse out all of the rice water using cold water. Gently comb or brush your hair to remove any tangles or knots. Now you are ready to style your hair for the day!

4 Incorporate rice water into your regular haircare routine. Washing with rice water can be used as part of a daily routine, every other day, or once a week. It really depends on your personal preference and the kind of results you hope to achieve.

• Many people find that washing with rice water every day can be a bit time-consuming and choose to use it less frequently and still get great results. Find the right routine that works for you!

Method 3 of 3:

1 Making Your Own Rice Water by Fermenting

• Gather up your ingredients. You will need 1/2 cup of rice, 2-3 cups of water, and a bowl to place them in.

• Don't forget to rinse the rice well before using!

2 Mix the rice and water together in the bowl. Stir the mixture to make sure none of the rice is sticking together.

• Soak the rice in the water for 15-30 minutes. The water should look murky or cloudy when it is ready to ferment. Strain the rice out and set the water aside.

• Place the soaked rice water in a container. Set it aside and keep it at room temperature for 24-48 hours to allow it to ferment.

Fermentation is said to strengthen the effects of rice water and help restore pH balance to dry or brittle hair.

3 A good way to know when the fermentation is complete is that the rice water will start to smell sour.

• Bottle the rice water in your favorite container. After the fermentation process is complete, transfer the rice water to a Tupperware or mason jar. A squeeze bottle also works very well and comes in handy when applying it to your hair later!

• Any rice water that you do not use right away can be stored in the fridge for about seven days.

• Adding a few drops of lavender or other essential oils is a great way to make the rice water smell pleasant!

5 Home Remedies for Dandruff (Or a Dry, Itchy Scalp)
Do you find yourself constantly scratching your head because of an itchy scalp? You’re not alone. Many people experience discomfort of dandruff, which could also be quite embarrassing in public. In today's post, we'll share 5 home remedies for dandruff that will help you reduce dryness and relieve your itchy scalp.

What is dandruff, anyway? Dandruff is basically flaky dead skin cells that come from a dry scalp. Technically, it’s just a cosmetic problem and dandruff in itself is harmless. But what is causing dandruff is worth some looking into. Some causes could include medical reasons such as eczema or fungus and bacterial infections on the scalp, in which case we’d recommend consulting a doctor. But it could also be caused by simple things like change of seasons, allergic reactions, overusing certain hair products, or simply lack of proper hair hygiene.
To relieve your itchy scalp, you can either purchase an over the counter anti-dandruff shampoo and treatment, or go the more natural route ( organic ftw ) and simply try some of these great 5 DIY dandruff home remedies.
Baking soda is not only amazing for baking cookies, but is also a powerful disinfectant when it comes to cleaning anything. We’re talking your kitchen, your bathroom tiles, and yes… your scalp, too! Baking soda exfoliates your scalp and prevents dandruff. To create this remedy, mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with water until you reach the perfect paste consistency. For best results, part your hair in sections and apply a few drops of olive oil before spreading the paste on your scalp, and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Then, thoroughly rinse. For best results, repeat this procedure regularly - once or twice a week.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has great anti-inflammatory properties that can kill viruses and yeast that cause itchiness on the skin. To create this dandruff remedy, mix ½ cup of apple cider vinegar with ½ cup of water. Massage it well into your scalp and then leave it in 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with cold water. Repeat this routine regularly every few days until you start seeing results.

3. Lemon Juice

Have you ever gotten lemon juice on a recent cut? Did it sting like crazy? That’s because lemons contain antiseptic properties, which is why they are a great remedy for an itchy dry scalp. Massage fresh lemon juice onto your scalp and leave it in for 5 minutes. We recommend to test a drop of lemon juice on a small part of your scalp - if it really stings, then dilute the juice with water. Repeat this procedure at least daily until the itchiness goes away.

4. Banana And Avocado

Yum… sounds like a smoothie for your scalp. Bananas and avocados are very nourishing and moisturizing ingredients which can reduce the flakes, inflammation and dryness of the scalp. To create this mask, mash 2 bananas with 1 avocado and apply all over your scalp where it’s itchy. Leave it in for at least 30 minutes. Rinse it out with cold water and repeat this regularly until the itchiness subsides or goes away.

5. Tea Tree Oil

Not that many people know how magical tea tree oil is. It has natural anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which will help relieve your dry and itchy scalp. What’s even better: a little bit of tea tree oil goes a long way. Mix 3 drops of tea tree oil with 1 tablespoon of vegetable or olive oil. Massage it well into your scalp and then rinse thoroughly with water. The smell of tea tree oil is a little bit strong, so you may want to do this before going to sleep or on days when you’re at home.
Also, an off topic side note: if you ever get an unwanted pimple, dab a little bit of tea tree oil onto it and watch it dry out overnight. Magic.

Having trouble with split ends?

Split ends are a problem that haunts almost all of us. There are several causes of split hair; even if you avoid excessive styling tools and over use of chemical treatments; going out daily is something one can’t resist which leads to the environmental damage from heat, cold, wind and other climate issues. I constantly try getting rid of it through hair trimming but it leads to my hair remain short. Now that I’m trying to grow it longer, I looked into searching home remedies for split ends, and found some really easy concoctions that you can make with just a few simple ingredients.
Home

Remedy #1
Olive oil and avocado turn out to be a great remedy for split ends. Olive oil, being incredibly moisturizing for dry and damaged, makes hair silky and shiny. Avocado is also known to contain many nutrients and vitamins conducive to healthy skin and hair. Combined with egg whites, these ingredients make a wonderful treatment for split ends, and also serve as good natural nourishment for hair.
Ingredients:
1 avocado, pitted and skinned, 2 tablespoons egg whites and 3 tablespoons olive oil
Mash up the avocado and mix in the egg whites and olive oil. Whip until you obtain a creamy consistency like conditioner. Apply to your hair, cover with a shower cap and let sit for 45 minutes to an hour. Rinse thoroughly and wash hair with a mild, natural shampoo to get the mixture out but let the nutrients keep working.

Home Remedy #2
In addition to being completely delicious, papaya is rich in protein and amino acids, which can help to make hair stronger. Mixed with plain yogurt, it makes a luxurious hair mask that will make your hair silky smooth and strong.
Ingredients:
1 papaya, de-seeded and skinned, ½ cup plain yogurt
Cut the papaya in half and scoop out the seeds, then use a knife to remove the skin. Mash it up with a fork and then mix in the yogurt, whipping it until you obtain a smooth consistency. Apply to hair like conditioner, and put on a shower cap and let it sit for 45 minutes to an hour. Rinse thoroughly, but for this one you don’t have to worry about washing out the smell as it smell quite good!!

Home Remedy #3
Could anyone think that beer could be a remedy for split ends? Yes, it is!! The proteins and sugar in beer bonds to your hair, helping to strengthen and mend damaged follicles. You don’t need to mix it with anything else, just pour it into a spray bottle and spray evenly over your hair. Rinse thoroughly and wash with a mild, natural shampoo to get rid of the beer scent.
And now that you know it all and it’s so easy… what are you waiting for? Try these Split end removal remedies and experience the change.
