The Health Foundation Your trusted platform for partnerships to strengthen public healthcare in the Western Cape

The Health Foundation is an independent, not-for-profit company which mobilises resources and facilitates partnerships for priority projects that aim to improve the quality and patient experience of public health care in the Western Cape. Whether you are a family member grateful for lifesaving treatment given to somebody dear to you, who wants to show your gratitude by giving something back, or a

large corporate requiring responsible reporting on the use of your corporate social responsibility funds, the Health Foundation will assist you to make your planned donation a reality. Whether you wish to help by painting a clinic, or by donating a multi-million rand operating theatre, the Health Foundation will enable to make your gift a reality. The process of establishing the Foundation started in 2011, when research identified that there was a great deal of interest among corporates in making donations via a channel which would ensure accountable use of those donations and also visible successes which would be publicly acknowledged. A Memorandum of Incorporation was drawn up, a Section 21 Company registered, and a Board appointed. The Health Foundation is committed to good governance and transparent reporting, as demonstrated by the calibre of its Board of Directors and auditors. Corporates and citizens are invited to support the mission of The Health Foundation and to partner with us in achieving it.

This National Organ Donor Awareness Month, we recognise that South Africa has one of the world’s lowest organ donation rates—just 0.6%.

In a country where over 4,000 patients wait anxiously for life-saving organ transplants, a group of Stellenbosch University medical students has sparked a movement that’s changing the narrative. Their non-profit initiative, Save7, named after the potential for one donor to save seven lives, has partnered with The Health Foundation of South Africa to launch a groundbreaking project: the LifePod, at Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town.

Equipped with ventilators, monitors, infusion sets, and specialised beds, to preserve organ viability for 12–36 hours, the LifePod is expected to facilitate 1–2 donor cases per month, potentially saving 100+ lives annually, with the aim to replicate the model across South Africa.

The goal: a network of donor ICUs that can transform transplant care nationwide.

The Health Foundation proudly attended the Annual SAPRIN Conference held at Krystal Beach Hotel in Cape Town from 21 – 23 July.

The gathering brought together scientists, role players and stakeholders in the population science field to enhance research capacity, build capacity, promote collaborative networks, foster interdisciplinary approaches, showcase research and dynamic data utilisation under this year’s theme Advancing Health and Social Wellbeing through Population Science.

With delegates from all 7 SAPRIN nodes in attendance, the conference was also addressed by the Western Cape Department of Health Wellness head of department, Dr Keith Cloete and C-SHARP node director, Dr Hannah Hussey who both brought home the importance of science engagement on population issues, for greater health and social impact, highlighting the unique experiences and perspectives of the Western Cape node and communities.

SAPRIN acting director, Dr André Rose emphasized the need to go beyond data collection for the sake of science, but meaningfully ploughing back into communities that allow fieldworkers and community health workers into their homes, for benefit sharing.

In wrapping up Mandela Month, we acknowledge the efforts of our Scaling Use of Health Data: A Decentralized Approach project teams who generously donated and distributed essential food and clothing items to benefit patients at Elsies River Clinic and Karl Bremer Hospital, for many of whom the daily struggle to meet basic needs, especially food, is a harsh reality.

These heartfelt initiatives were made possible by joining hands with the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness (WCGHW) - Metro Health Services (MHS), Provincial Health Data Centre (PHDC) and City of Cape Town (CCT).

We are also reminded and remain encouraged by Madiba's words: "There can be no greater gift than that of giving one's time and energy to help others without expecting anything in return."

This Mandela Day, we showed up with open hands and open hearts.

Together with the Healing Hearts Initiative, we spent the morning listening to stories of love, loss, and resilience from grieving moms in Delft.

From sharing space to handing over care packs — it was all about showing that no mother walks this journey alone.

Let today be a reminder — that kindness can be quiet, but it is powerful.

18/07/2025

This Mandela Day, The Health Foundation team chose to walk in Madiba’s footsteps by supporting mothers at Healing Hearts.

We prepared care packs filled with essentials and encouragement — a small gesture to honour the resilience of mothers navigating loss and healing.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others.” – Nelson Mandela

Together, we honour that difference towards wellness.

World Population Day | 100k Stories, One Future

This World Population Day, we’re celebrating people-powered data and a major milestone for C-SHARP in Nomzamo and Bishop Lavis.
Over 100,000 individuals have been registered through the CHAMP app, a tool used by community health workers to collect real-time health and population data, since December 2023.

From births and household assessments to health referrals — this data helps improve services, guide policy, and strengthen Community-Oriented Primary Care (COPC).

Powered by local partnerships and part of the South African Population Research Infrastructure Network. C-SHARP is showing how population data can truly shape better futures.

As a platform that facilitates partnerships geared towards a healthier tomorrow for all, The Health Foundation is proud to be a grant recipient on behalf of the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness in this special initiative.

Non-profits are the backbone of our communities, but budget cuts and dwindling donations have forced vital services to shut down. The Cape Care Fund, launched on 6 June 2025 by the Western Cape Department of Social Development and The Health Foundation of South Africa, is stepping in to keep NGOs and NPOs alive.

In just three years, financial strain has closed 12 child protection branches, 3 homes for older persons, 18 senior community centers, and 4 youth care centers—leaving thousands without support.

Your contribution can make difference. Every rand helps protect children, care for the elderly, and sustain communities in need. Corporates, individuals, changemakers—let’s build a future that thrives, not just survives.

🎉 The Health Foundation is incredibly proud to be a part of the launch of the Organ Donation LifePod at Tygerberg Hospital — South Africa’s first ever dedicated organ transplant ICU.

This innovative unit, created by Stellenbosch University medical students at Save 7 organisation, in collaboration with hospital staff, will provide critical care to organ donors, preserving up to 100 life-saving organs each year that might otherwise be lost due to infrastructure shortages.

The LifePod offers a vital bridge between donor consent and successful transplantation, giving hope to over 4000 South Africans currently waiting for a life-saving transplant.

On 7th April, the Scaling use of health date: A decentralized approach team held an organized session at the 2025 PHASA conference with the theme “Partnerships for Public Health: Sculpting a Healthier Future.”

The session, titled ‘Working together for sustainable health systems through strengthening health services quality and health information and technology’, was facilitated by Bridgette Prince the Grant Manager at The Health Foundation and Hilary Goeiman: Director of Service Priorities Coordination (SPC) at Western Cape Government Health Wellness (WCGHW).

It highlighted how strategic collaboration between the City of Cape Town, WCGHW (Metro & Rural), the Provincial Health Data Centre, and The Health Foundation is enabling impact through data-driven decision-making. The partners utilised the session to showcase and emphasise that data is important but means little unless it's used.

Together, we’re building and using tools that:

📊 Strengthen health surveillance
📍 Support localised decision-making
⚙️ Drive targeted health interventions
⚡ Enable more agile, responsive health systems
