In October 2024, Bergvliet Lions Club was delighted to have a visit from a former member of our club, Lion Meryl Ramsay. She is now a member of the Bexhill-On-Sea Lions club in the UK. She suggested that we work together on a meaningful project, which she would ask Bexhill to fund. That is when the Rosedon House Food Garden came about.
This food garden project will encompass two facilities of the Western Cape Cerebral Palsy Association.
The Village Work Centre is a protected work centre for people with cerebral palsy. They are building custom made boxes, which will enable those in wheelchairs to access the planters. A lot of work is going into getting the boxes at the right height. Some of the workers are also resident at Rosedon House.
Rosedon House is a 24 hour residential care home. They currently have 47 adult residents. The aim of the home is to provide a safe and happy place for the residents. They also have a life skills programme that helps develop their skills and gives them a sense of independence. As they get older, they also provide frail care for those needing it.
The residents will help maintain the food garden and use the produce throughout the organisation of the Western Cape Cerebral Association.
Lion Alison Arnott put together a comprehensive quote on what is needed and the cost. Quote included 12 planter boxes, garden tools, wheelbarrow, hose and watering can.
Compost and potting soil will be needed too. Once the boxes are made and filled with soil etc we will see to the purchase of seedlings. The quote included 12 trays of seedlings. Thereafter, the Bergvliet Lions will be responsible for replenishing the seedlings, according to the season.
Our quote was accepted and we were delighted to receive a donation of £1 500!
