Well done Milk Matters

World Breastfeeding Week reminds us just how powerful breastfeeding can be 🤱🏽

Protecting babies, supporting moms, and saving lives.
But it’s not always easy. That’s why we’re joined by Jenny Wright & Theresa Swanepoel from Milk Matters to share expert tips, bust myths, and explore how we can better support breastfeeding moms.

🍼 Plus, learn why donor milk matters so much for vulnerable babies. www.milkmatters.org

Breast milk is the ideal food for infants it is safe, clean, and rich in antibodies that protect children from common illnesses.

We are looking for more runners to join our cause and run for the Thula Baba Project at this year’s Cape Town Marathon. We’ll help you set up your fundraising page and provide a branded training shirt.

World Breastfeeding Week 2025

Expressing breastmilk to be fed fresh or to be frozen for use later on, is a wonderful way to keep your baby breastmilk fed and to support breastfeeding when you are separated from your baby or unable to breastfeed for a while for some reason.

If you have more milk than your own baby will need, please donate it to milk banks like Milk Matters to be screened, pasteurised and supplied to vulnerable premature babies in neonatal ICUs, Donor milk is a lifeline for these tiny babies.

If you would like to donate your extra breastmilk, please contact us:

World Breastfeeding Week 2025

We hear a lot about how good breastfeeding is for nourishing a baby and for mom and baby bonding, but there is so much more to breastfeeding and breastmilk than just those two things.

There are components in the milk to support the baby's immune system, gut maturation, and brain development, provide growth factors and protect against infections, diabetes and cancer and to reduce the risk of allergies and SIDS, amongst so many other things.

Breastfeeding has many benefits for the mother's health too, in the short and long term. Many benefits increase the longer you breastfeed for. And yes, breastmilk has loads of good in it after your baby turns a year old!

🧶❤️ In the spirit of Mandela Day, Mowbray Maternity Hospital was blessed with a heartwarming donation of beautifully knitted beanies for our tiniest patients.

A huge thank you to our incredible community for wrapping our newborns in love and warmth – one stitch at a time. 💛🍼

Breastfeeding week starts today

Tomorrow, 1st August, is the start of World Breastfeeding Week.

The slogan for 2025 is "Prioritise Breastfeeding. Create sustainable support systems."

In South Africa, as in many countries around the world, the initiation of breastfeeding rate is relatively high, but sadly rates of exclusive breastfeeding drop dramatically over the first 6 months.

Clearly more support is needed to sustain breastfeeding for longer.
