There are several ways acupuncture relieves low back pain
(scientific studies)
1. Nervous System Modulation
• Needle stimulation activates A-delta and C nerve fibres in the skin and muscle.
• This sends signals to the spinal cord and brain, triggering the release of endorphins, enkephalins and dynorphins—natural pain-relieving chemicals.
• It can also dampen the transmission of pain signals in the spinal cord (“gate control” effect).
2. Neurochemical Release
• Functional MRI studies show activation of brain regions involved in pain perception and regulation (e.g., limbic system, hypothalamus).
• Acupuncture increases levels of serotonin and dopamine, which influence mood and pain thresholds.
3. Local Effects
• Needle insertion improves micro-circulation and reduces local inflammation by modulating cytokines and increasing nitric oxide.
• This can relax tight muscles and reduce tissue irritation around the lumbar area.
4. Central Pain Modulation
• Regular treatments appear to shift the central nervous system toward a state of reduced sensitivity to pain (lowering central sensitization).
5. Muscle and Fascia Response
• Needling may release myofascial trigger points, decreasing muscle spasm and improving range of motion.
Bottom Line
Acupuncture doesn’t just “block pain” — it triggers a multi-level physiological response (nervous system, chemical messengers, blood flow, immune signalling) that collectively reduces pain and improves function in people with chronic or recurrent low back pain.
