Not all needles are created equal!

1. AHPCSA Registration: Essential for safety in SA!
2. University Qualifications: Look for a BCompMed or similar degree.

Does acupuncture really work, or is it just a placebo?

New research confirms that acupuncture is a powerful, evidence-based therapy for conditions like chronic back pain, migraines, and even fertility support. Studies show it triggers the release of the body's natural painkillers and helps regulate our stress response.
Dr Lynda Thompson (MSc Chinese Med) brings over 30 years of healthcare experience to her Blouberg practice, helping you find balance through a blend of ancient wisdom and modern scientific understanding.

New Research: The Acupuncture & Fertility Connection

Science is catching up to what we’ve seen in practice for years: Acupuncture is a powerful ally for those on a fertility journey.

Recent systematic reviews (2024–2025) have highlighted significant improvements in pregnancy rates and emotional well-being for patients integrating acupuncture with assisted reproduction like IVF and FET.
In my latest blog post, I discuss:

Why "dosage" and timing of treatments matter.
How acupuncture acts as a "psychological bridge" to reduce cortisol.
What the newest data says about frozen embryo transfers.
Whether you're just starting to track your cycles or are preparing for a transfer, a balanced approach is key.

"We’ve all been there: a deadline looms, the to-do list is growing, and suddenly—that familiar, dull throb around your temples is back.
Stress headaches (tension-type headaches) are the most common neurological condition worldwide. While painkillers are a quick fix, they don't address the root of the tension.
Acupuncture is a modern, science-backed way to help your body reset. By lowering cortisol and releasing natural endorphins, it doesn't just mask the pain—it helps your nervous system exit 'fight or flight' mode.
Most of our patients find the experience so calming they actually fall asleep during their session!
Ready to trade that tension for tranquility?

❓ “Are herbal medicines always safe because they are natural?”

Many people assume that herbal medicines are always safe because they are natural. However, plant-based substances can still have active compounds that affect the body.

Phytotherapy is a regulated allied health profession in South Africa that involves the use of plant-based medicines as part of a broader healthcare approach.

Herbal medicines may interact with other medications, may not be suitable for certain individuals, and should be used with appropriate professional guidance.

Understanding how and when to use herbal medicines forms part of preventative healthcare and informed decision-making.

Only practitioners registered with the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) may practise phytotherapy lawfully.

🔎 Verify practitioner registration:

The AHPCSA maintains a public register of practitioners who are qualified and authorised to practise regulated allied health professions in South Africa.

PLANTAR FASCIITIS
Struggling with that first-step-of-the-morning heel pain? You aren't alone—plantar fasciitis affects roughly 10% of the population. While traditional methods like rest and stretching are standard, acupuncture is a clinically backed, drug-free alternative that can significantly accelerate your recovery.
How Acupuncture Targets Plantar Fasciitis
Acupuncture doesn't just mask the pain; it targets the underlying inflammation and tension in the foot and calf:
• Reduces Inflammation: Needling triggers the release of adenosine and cortisol, the body's natural anti-inflammatories, to soothe the plantar fascia.
• Releases Muscle Tension: Specialists often use trigger point acupuncture on the calf (gastrocnemius/soleus) to reduce the "tug" on your heel.
• Speeds Tissue Repair: The micro-stimulation recruits fibroblasts to the area, which are essential for producing the collagen needed to heal micro-tears.
• Natural Pain Relief: Sessions stimulate the brain to release endorphins, providing immediate relief without the side effects of NSAIDs or steroid injections.
What to Expect
Most patients begin to feel a noticeable reduction in morning pain within 3 to 5 sessions. For lasting results, practitioners typically recommend:
• Frequency: 1–2 sessions per week for 4 to 6 weeks.
• Complementary Care: Acupuncture works best when paired with physical therapy, stretching, and proper arch support.

IBS and Acupuncture

A holistic approach to calming the gut

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common yet frustrating condition that affects the digestive system. Symptoms may include bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, or alternating bowel patterns. While IBS does not cause structural damage to the intestines, it can significantly impact daily life, energy, and emotional wellbeing.
Acupuncture offers a gentle, holistic way to support people living with IBS by addressing both digestive symptoms and the underlying patterns contributing to imbalance.

How Acupuncture Helps IBS
1. Regulates Gut Function
Research suggests acupuncture may help regulate bowel motility — meaning it can assist both constipation and diarrhoea by improving communication between the brain and gut (often referred to as the gut-brain axis).
2. Reduces Abdominal Pain
Acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins and modulates pain pathways, which can reduce visceral hypersensitivity — a key feature in IBS where the gut becomes overly sensitive.
3. Calms the Nervous System
Stress is one of the biggest triggers for IBS flare-ups. Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system (“rest and digest” mode), helping to reduce anxiety, tension, and stress-related gut symptoms
