Birth is a completely normal, natural, healthy experience with its own rhythm and flow. If mom and baby are healthy, free of fear, relaxed, experiencing a healthy labor and mom trusts her birthing instincts and the normal functioning of her body then a calm, comfortable, drug-free birth is achievable. "We believe that every woman has within her the power to call upon her natural instincts to bring about the best possible birthing for her baby and herself"
-Marie F. Mongan

HypnoBirthing® - The Mongan Method, is a complete childbirth education programme that aims to teach parents focused relaxation techniques through self-hypnosis, visualization and breathing, much like daydreaming. These techniques are used during birthing to allow the body to function as it was designed to, with the birthing muscles working in perfect harmony, to achieve birth calmly and easily. Mom is fully conscious and aware during the birthing.

Until recently, the prevailing scientific habit has been to treat the earliest period of human development – from conception to birth, as an insensitive, unconscious, period of physical growth.

What about my own healing?

One of the caveats of being in the healing calling or profession is that we are constantly feeling the pull, the need, the duty, the responsibility and the passion to be there helping someone else through the hard parts and challenges in health, birth, post partum, wellness, grief, depression and life in general.

We feel needed and that makes us feel of value.

In other words – we make sure we are feeling valued by being there in the need for someone else.

We get so addicted to feeling of value by being there for someone else we forget to apply the knowledge and healing to ourselves. We get burned out, we get irritable with our close loved ones, we skip meals, we forget to do the healing meditations and slowing down that we are advising others.

We get so high on the likes or external affirmations on our social sharing we forget to even actually do the meditation we set up the photo shoot for!

We start to look through everything through the lens of our own inner judgement of feeling of value, or worth, of feeling love-able through being there for others.

I have met this scenario too many times. And there is one truth I know. There is no one who is going to do your healing work for you.

No matter what you know, what you preach, what you share, how you care for others, which therapies you practice, which modalities you have studied, who you have apprenticed with, who you have birthed, how many mothers you have in your care, how many signed up for your course, how many students you have – there is no short cut.

For you to be the happy, thriving, shining, healthy, self you know you are – you have to do the being, living, claiming, experiencing it for it to align and flourish.

The battle is not out there. There will never be enough time. The battle is to set aside what we sacrifice for our external evaluation of our worth and actually claim our worth by spending time, energy, our healing, our being with ourselves.

Stop waiting for someone to come and dose out their medicine to you for your health and happiness.

Let's take responsibility. Let's take it deeper. Let's come back to ourselves.

This is the first part. I'd love to hear how you are claiming back your health and happiness too?

Gonna go do what I love now

Second Stage

Let's stop rushing it.

Let's stop the anxiety panic and rush .

Lets stop the pressure on the mom that is only adding to exhaustion and distress.

I think we need to desperately reframe second stage and bring it back to biology, rationality and trust in the birthing process.

Put the clock away.

Put your gloves down.

And sit on our hands so they don't wander into any vaginas to "just check if there is any progress. "

We are rushing a process needlessly.

I will be frank.

They taught us wrong.

They taught us time parameters.

They taught us to shout push and stare at the yoni with every contraction.

They taught us shouting louder and sharing the mom would make her push "better".

They taught us to put her in lithotomy and use all her energy even if the fetal ejection reflex wasn't there.

And then they taught us to do episiotomies, vacuum and forceps.

And then how to resist the baby after all that ....

I unschooled all this by sitting with a wise midwife after my studies and internship.

And I learnt about second stage by watching women's bodies work according to nature.

They taught us wrong

And its having awful consequences on out birthing mums, our yonis and our babies.

Let's reframe second stage.

Do you know that feeling when you wake up in the middle of the night and it’s cold and your nappy feels heavy. And there are so many strange sounds all around you, and it’s dark and scary. And you get a hit in your head and it’s your hand that’s on its own adventure. And you can’t control it at all and it flings itself around and scratches your face and pulls at your hair.

And your legs start kicking off the duvet, even though you’re cold as it is and you try to make it stop but they have their own will. And so you’re lying there completely helpless with flailing limbs that want to do everything, but none of the things you want.

And you can’t find mum. And you call for her and you find yourself feeling really scared. What if your beloved mum doesn’t come for you. You can’t imagine anything worse and you start to cry because you miss her so terribly. You have never felt as alone as this very moment.

And then she is suddenly there. Standing right by your bed and looking at you with worry and love. And she is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen. And you grin up at her with happiness and relief. You don’t think you’ve ever felt as happy as this very moment.

And she picks you up and holds you close. And she smells like herself, and also a bit like you. Like milk and safety and love. And it’s the best smell in the whole entire world.

And she is warm and safe and soft and her hands caress you and she feeds you and hums your favourite tune. And you love her voice. You’ve known it far longer than you’ve really known her. It has lulled you to sleep and made you laugh and calmed you when you were distressed. It is the most beautiful voice in the whole entire world.

And you get to lie right up against her and you feel your entire body start to warm up again. And your still cold hand starts stroking her and moves up towards her neck and accidentally scratches her. Stupid uncontrollable hand. But mum doesn’t get angry. She takes your stupid hand in hers and it turns all warm again. And this is the best feeling in the world. Right here in mummy’s arms, with your hand in hers. Even the nappy doesn’t feel as horrible anymore.

And you feel your eyes getting heavy and you know that everything is okay now cause mummy is here. Your mum. Your wonderful, incredible mum who always looks after you. Night and day.
You look up at her one last time before you fall asleep. She looks tired and her eyes are closed, and yet she is still the most magnificent thing you know. How amazing that she wants to sit here with you in this moment. How amazing that she will always sit with you for a bit when you need her to.

You smile to yourself. How lucky you were that she became your mum. The most perfect mum anyone could have asked for.

You knew, even before you saw her, that she would be the best thing in the world.

Oh how you love her. Your mum.❤️
