• Did you know that breastfeeding supports weight management in both mothers and children?

Breastfeeding mothers are more likely to return to their pre-pregnancy weight, and breastfed babies are less likely to become overweight children.

Breastfeed your child for 2 years and longer, give baby only breastmilk from birth to six months

Share the benefits with your families, employers and community, so they support you.

Obesity has many different drivers:
- suboptimal early childhood feeding practices
- poor diet quality
- biology
- stress
- insufficient sleep
- lack of knowledge
- the normalisation of obesity
- and insufficient physical activity all play a role.
- Underlying to this are a lack of physical and economic access to nutritious food, food marketing and the food environment, and a poor infrastructure, social services and water.

•Obesity is key underlying risk factor for disease such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

The United Nations has declared 2021 as the 'International year of Fruits and Vegetables'
So this year the focus of National Nutrition and Obesity week is 'Eat more fruits and Vegetables everyday'
Why do we need to eat fruits and vegetables?
✅They promote good health by strengthening the immune system
✅They may reduce the severity of some infectious diseases
✅People who eat more fruits and vegetables on a daily basis tend to live longer
✅Fruits and vegetables help with gut health
✅They actually contain vitamins, minerals as well as fibre and probiotics

The recommended amount to take in daily is 5 portions of fruit and vegetables (together). However in South Africa, people don't consume this recommended amount due to various reasons
It could be due to the increasing demands on time and life so ultra processed foods are more convenient, not enough access to fresh/frozen fruits and vegetables, affordability and the recent covid 19 pandemic.

While we understand that sometimes people don't know how to include more fruits and vegetables into their lifestyle.
So today we share some practical tips that you could possibly try:
🍒Including fruits and vegetables into meal planning
🍒Try eating just one yellow/orange and one green veg per day
🍒Canned or frozen vegetables are a good source if there is limited time to get fresh fruits or vegetables everyday
🍒Do meal prep the day before so that it saves you time and you can just add fruits or veg to meals
🍒Encourage children to eat more fruit and veg by making it a part of all of their meals
🍒Experiment with different combinations and flavors. Appearance is important, so make sure you present your fruits and vegetables in an attractive manner

Try out these tips and set a goal to make fruits and vegetables a bigger part of your life. Share how you use these tips above and tag us in your post 🙂

We are currently experiencing our 3rd wave of the covid-19 infections and since we are Health Care Workers we are so busy behind the scenes whilst adhering to covid-19 regulations the President has put in place.
Just a reminder that the spread of covid-19 can be decreased by a few simple rules:
✅Wearing a mask that covers your nose and mouth
✅Wash your hands and sanitize regularly
✅Maintain social distancing
✅If you feel unwell or suspect that you have covid symptoms OR have tested positive for Covid 19, you have to isolate from the rest of your family and society at large.
✅If you are a contact of a positive case you will have to self-quarantine. Familiarize yourself with the difference in terminologies
✅Cancel gatherings, don't visit people, only go out if absolutely necessary and maintain covid-19 protocols while out
✅If you are eligible for vaccination, get yourself registered. Vaccination is a guaranteed way to protect a population. Please educate yourself from a reputable source - preferably a health care worker.

We are open and willing to discuss any concerns you have

Please stay safe and keep warm
