A BIT OF REALITY...💕

I have started to treat patients who have been severely affected by COVID-19. They get hospitalized due to respiratory distress and then get transferred to Helen Zille Wing (Sub Acute Facility in Sea Point) a few weeks later, where I am lucky enough to be part of their journey to recovery.

Reduced lung function is no joke! Imagine how you feel after doing a 400m sprint. Now imagine that this is how you felt after taking a shower or walking up one flight of stairs.
Some of these patients rely on oxygen therapy to do their daily activities (ADLs) which pre COVID was no effort at all. This can improve slowly with pulmonary rehabilitation but we shouldn't forget how it can impact a patient's mental health too.

Don't get me wrong... I hate these masks, 😷I agree that Covid restrictions affects the economy and I can't wait for this to all be over.. But working with these patients has woken me up to the severity of this pandemic and remember..
😁It's not about you!

The article tells a story of a physio who personally experienced COVID-19.

Ana Carolina Xavier was helping as many as six coronavirus patients a day to slowly recover lung capacity when she began worrying about her own breathing.

| PHYSIO AND COVID-19 |

Respiratory (or commonly known as chest) physiotherapy plays an integral part of the recovery in patients with the Corona Virus.

Our role is mainly in the ICU, helping patients: 💥Regain or improve their respiratory function, 💥Remove their secretions in their lungs
💥Help the nursing staff position the patients in functional or drainage positions
💥Prevent muscle weakness or joint stiffness.

Our roles are patient specific but our goals never change. Improving the quality of life of each patient, is what we strive for!

| DONING AND DOFFING |

It is now compulsory for everyone to wear a MASK when you are in public. It is also important to put it on and off correctly as to not contaminate yourself. Washing your hands and sanitizing them effectively is still the best way to prevent the spread of .

Thanks to Mediclinic Southern Africa today for SHARING these tips.

MORE TIPS:

😷Cloth masks and surgical masks should only be worn once. Cloth masks can luckily be washed in 60°c (or iron it after washing) after use.

😷Cloth masks and surgical masks only prevent you from spreading the disease. It does not prevent you from contracting it.

😷The white side of the surgical mask goes on the inside as it contains the filter.

😷An N95 mask, that fits snug around your nose, cheeks and chin is the best protection.

😷Don't touch the front of your mask.

😷 Don't take your mask off and place it on counter, in your pocket or any other surface where it could get contaminated. Hold it by the strings.

😷Wash your hands or sanitize them before and after you put on your mask.

😷Keep your hands away from your face! The mucous membrane in your mouth, nose and eyes is where the virus will colonize.
