Dr Sonia Couto - Phytotherapist

Dr Sonia Couto - Phytotherapist This is an educational page created to teach viewers about herbal medicines and their uses. But does that mean it has no place in modern society?

Permanently closed.

The use of Western Herbal Medication has been discontinued in mainstream hospitals since the early 1950's. Most people view herbal medicine as a traditional form of medicine or as "old wives tales" that their grandparents live by. Furthermore, in many countries it is banned from practice because their governments feel as though they cannot standardise or control Natural Medicine practices. However, South Africa remains as diverse a country as ever and allows Alternative Medicine to be practised within the boundaries of the Allied Health Professions Council. Not only are qualified practitioners starting to diffuse their way through this country but masses of research are being produced on just how effective and profound Herbal Medication is. We no longer live in a time where our bodies and our health are an enigma, or where we do not understand anything about the pills chucked down our throats in the morning. Rather, we hope to bring this country into an era of educated awareness about all health care options available to the general public so that we might become a shining example of autonomy to the world.

My Story

Hi, I am Dr Sonia Couto, a Dr in Phytotherapy... otherwise known as a Medical Herbalist. I completed both Bsc Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Bcm Phytotherapy with summa cm laude at the University of the Western Cape in 2013 and 2015, respectively. Currently, I practice in Kenilworth, Cape Town (Reg no A11709).

The aim of my page is to provide regular and informative blog posts, tips and recipes. It is also my main platform for sharing updates on events. So make sure you don’t miss out! This year I will be focusing on “Tea and Clay” with @themuddies_ and various workshops on health topics.

I will also be sharing news on my work with Babylonstoren, Cabine du Cap and the Learn2Live centre in Wallacedene. As well as updates on my travels to Europe for workshops and seminars alongside Hk MK Karim from the Wellbeing Natural Medicine Clinic in Inverness, Scotland.
