πŸ›Œ Why Sleep is Your Secret Recovery Weapon πŸ’™

Did you know that sleep plays a crucial role in joint and muscle recovery?
While you rest, your body:

βœ… Repairs muscles and tissues after exercise or surgery
βœ… Reduces inflammation in joints
βœ… Restores energy for optimal mobility and strength
βœ… Supports overall healing and pain management

πŸ’‘ Prioritising quality sleep is just as important as physiotherapy or exercise - it helps you recover faster, protect your joints, and stay active!

πŸ”¬ Science Simplified:
Why Recovery Is Faster Today - Part 2

In Part 1 we covered modern anaesthesia and minimally invasive surgery. Now let's talk about the third game-changer in joint replacement recovery:

3. Improved Physiotherapy Protocols
Physiotherapy used to begin days after surgery. Today, it starts on the same day - sometimes within hours of leaving the operating theatre.
Early movement prevents stiffness, reduces the risk of blood clots, rebuilds muscle strength faster, and trains your body to trust the new joint sooner.

Combined with personalised rehab plans, better pain management, and a team approach to care, patients are returning to daily life weeks faster than previous generations.

Joint replacement isn't what it used to be, and that's a very good thing. πŸ’ͺ

🧊πŸ”₯ Ice vs Heat:
Which One Does Your Hip or Knee Actually Need?

It sounds simple, but reaching for the wrong one can make things worse.
Here's your quick guide:

USE ICE ❄️ WHEN:
πŸ”΅ There is swelling or visible inflammation
πŸ”΅ The joint feels hot to the touch
πŸ”΅ You've just had a flare-up or increased activity
πŸ”΅ You're in the first 48-72 hours after an injury or surgery

Ice reduces swelling, numbs sharp pain, and slows inflammation.
Apply for 15–20 minutes at a time, never directly on the skin.

USE HEAT πŸ”₯ WHEN:
πŸ”΄ Your joints feel stiff, especially first thing in the morning
πŸ”΄ You're about to exercise or go for a walk
πŸ”΄ The pain is a deep, dull ache rather than sharp or swollen
πŸ”΄ You're dealing with chronic arthritis discomfort

Heat relaxes the muscles around the joint, improves circulation, and eases stiffness. A warm shower, heat pack, or warm towel works well - again, 15–20 minutes is ideal.

Today is World Hemophilia Day πŸ”΄

- It's a topic close to our hearts as orthopaedic surgeons.

One of the most common pre-surgery questions:
"I'm on blood thinners - can I still have a knee or hip replacement?"

Yes - but it takes careful planning. 🩸

Before any procedure, we review your medications and work closely with your physician to safely adjust your blood thinners in the lead-up to surgery. Every patient's situation is different, and we never take a one-size-fits-all approach.

The most important rule?
NEVER stop blood thinners on your own. Always speak to your surgeon first.

If you've been putting off joint replacement because of your medication, let's have that conversation. πŸ’¬

πŸ§„πŸ«š Two ingredients. Centuries of use. And the science to back it up.

Garlic and ginger have been staples in kitchens and traditional medicine for hundreds of years.

Ginger 🫚
Studies show that gingerols and shogaols, the active compounds in ginger, inhibit the same inflammatory pathways targeted by common anti-inflammatory medications. In clinical trials, patients with osteoarthritis of the knee who took ginger extract reported significant reductions in pain and stiffness compared to placebo groups.

Garlic πŸ§„
Garlic contains diallyl disulfide, a compound shown in research to limit the effects of pro-inflammatory cytokines, the proteins responsible for driving joint inflammation. Studies also suggest garlic may help protect cartilage from damage caused by arthritis.

Together, they're one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory duos you can add to your plate and autumn is the perfect season to use them.

🍲 Stir them into soups. Roast them with vegetables. Add them to a warming curry.
Your joints will feel the difference.

πŸ’¬ Do you cook with garlic and ginger regularly?
Tell us your favourite way to use them! πŸ‘‡

🚫 MYTH: Hip replacement means you can't bend.

βœ… FACT:
Most patients regain a full, functional range of movement after hip replacement surgery.

While there are some precautions in the early weeks of recovery to protect the new joint as it heals, the goal of hip replacement is to restore your movement - not restrict it.

Tying your shoes. Getting in and out of a car. Sitting comfortably. Picking up your grandchildren. These are the everyday moments we're working to give back to you. πŸ™Œ

Every patient's recovery is different, and Dr Roy will guide you through exactly what to expect at each stage, so there are no surprises, only progress.

πŸ’¬ What other hip replacement myths have you heard? Drop them below and we'll set the record straight!

PART 1 OF 2
πŸ”¬ Science Simplified:
Why Recovery After Joint Surgery Is Faster Today

If you had a hip or knee replacement 20 years ago, you were likely in hospital for a week and walking with a frame for months. Today?
Many patients are up and walking within hours of surgery.

Here's what changed πŸ‘‡
1. Modern Anaesthesia
We've moved away from heavy general anaesthesia that left patients groggy and nauseous for days. Today, we use targeted nerve blocks and spinal anaesthesia that numb only what needs to be numbed - meaning less medication in your system, a clearer head, and a faster start to recovery.

2. Minimally Invasive Surgery
Smaller incisions mean less damage to the surrounding muscles and tissue. Less trauma to the body = less pain, less swelling, and a significantly shorter road back to normal movement.

The science is working in your favour. πŸ™Œ

Stay tuned for Part 2 where we talk about the role of physiotherapy in your recovery.
