We are so excited to share the launch of Rise. Let share this song with all South African and unite our country through music 🌹❤️🙏🏾
Women of South Africa RISE in unity with the sounds of change.
Charmaine Soobramoney, change activist, independent director of the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA), and recent past chairperson of Business Arts South Africa (BASA) has amplified her voice of unity with the women of South Africa.
RISE, a song commissioned by BASA and the AA is sung by young, culturally diverse emerging artists and written by World Music Composer, Lynne Holmes (aka Desert Rose). These young heartfelt voices call on all South Africans to RISE and “remember who we are” and “remember where we come from”, showcasing the creative potential of South Africans to use the power of music to inspire the movement for positivity, courage and change.
“Music has been instrumental in keeping hope alive in our country throughout Apartheid ,” says Soobramoney, adding “it is vital we harness this medium to counter the voice of conflict and dissension”.
Soobramoney says RISE touches the hearts of all who listen to it and is a powerful reminder of the core qualities in leadership that brought about democracy in South Africa.
“We need these qualities to emerge amongst all our people and sectors of society to ignite change, cohesion and success. It is my prayer that this song inspires all those who hear it,” she says.
In July 2021, a wave of unrest swept South Africa, leading our country to the brink of civil war. The incarceration of ex-president Jacob Zuma, job layoffs and economic inequality worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic, fueled the riots and looting. The violence began in Kwazulu-Natal and spread to the province of Gauteng with the worst violence that South Africa has experienced since the end of Apartheid.
Charmaine Soobramoney, a multiskilled senior executive, is the creative catalyst igniting the desire of individuals and businesses to drive meaningful and sustainable value, to pay it forward. During her tenure as Chairperson of BASA, Charmaine in partnership with the AA (Automobile Association), commissioned RISE, a song that is aligned to the AA’s drive to unite our nation.
Willem Groenewald, Chief Executive Officer of the AA says, “Music is such a beautiful medium of communication, uniting voices and evoking emotion over vast spectrums. We are proud to be part of this movement to spread hope, care and encouragement and to be the change we all seek. We have seen time and again throughout our history that South Africans unite in the face of adversity. For us, this song symbolises the collective spirit of South Africans to rise once again.”
The song RISE is sung by Vuka Africa Collective, African voices for hope and peace.
“These beautiful voices are ambassadors of our nation, “says World Music composer, Lynne Holmes.
“Music is often a precursor to societal changes and shifts. As long as we continue producing music that reminds us of our humanity and shared journey, there is hope. I have personally witnessed the devastating impact of war, twenty years on, having given peace and reconciliation concerts in countries like Bosnia. There are no winners in separation and war. I love my country and all of our people; I believe South Africans have the creative power and resilience to unite and overcome our challenges. I will continue to write music that promotes a society of healing.”
RISE was composed and produced by Lynne Holmes at Rootspring Studios in Cape Town. The song features five singers from different cultural backgrounds, i.e., Mohau Moahlali, Thandeka Dladla, Seren Ariana, Asemahle, and Fancy Galada. They sing in English, Xhosa, Tswana, Sotho and Zulu.
