The hardest thing about asking for help with your mental health is often the quiet battle you fight before you even say a word. It’s the fear of being judged, misunderstood, or dismissed. It’s convincing yourself that your struggles aren’t “serious enough” or that you should be able to handle it on your own.

Sometimes it’s not even having the words to explain what’s going on inside you. Reaching out requires vulnerability, and that can feel incredibly exposing, but it’s also one of the bravest and most important steps toward healing.

Dr Shea Walls is beginning a 7-part series on anxiety - her favourite area of psychiatry, because of how common it is and how rewarding it can be to treat.

In this series, she’ll be breaking down the four most common anxiety disorders and the different ways they can be treated, helping to make sense of something so many people experience.

✨️ Part Two ✨️

Some patients benefit from a multidisciplinary approach because emotional, behavioural, and physical health are often deeply interconnected.

From a clinical perspective, therapy is most effective when it forms part of a broader care plan—working alongside medical practitioners, psychiatrists, or other specialists to address underlying contributors such as neurobiology, trauma, or chronic stress.

This collaborative approach allows for more accurate assessment, integrated treatment planning, and better long-term outcomes, ensuring that care is not only symptom-focused, but truly holistic.

Wishing you a gentle and restful Easter weekend.

This time of year is a beautiful reminder to slow down, take a breath, and reconnect with the people and moments that matter most. Whether you’re spending time with loved ones or simply giving yourself space to rest, remember that taking a break is an important part of caring for your mental health.

Bipolar mood disorder is a serious mental health condition that significantly impacts many around us. It can be a tricky diagnosis to navigate, for both the patient and the clinician. The right treatment balance is possible and a great quality of life achievable, but it sometimes takes time and a lot of commitment from patients.

At the practice today we honour every one in all stages of that process today: their courage, their struggles and their victories.

May World Bipolar Mood Disorder Awareness Day shed more light and attention to this important condition.
