Muladhara (literally, “root support”) is located at the base of the spine. It is often depicted as a red four-petaled lotus, and it’s connected to the earth element.
Muladhara governs what are considered the four primal urges: food, sleep, s*x, and self-preservation. Its energetic function is to help us maintain a sense of groundedness and inner stability.
A blocked root chakra can manifest as physical issues like arthritis, constipation, and bladder or colon problems. On a deeper level a blocked root chakra manifest in the fight or flight response, anger, rage, controlling personality, being materialistic, selfish, impatient, insecure about finances, basic needs of well-being. When it’s in alignment and open, we feel grounded and secure, both physically and emotionally. We feel re-vitalized, energetic, we feel awakened, we have stamina and we have at our core a pioneering spirit.
