Legally Speaking (Part 3)

The “ANC” Talk

Before the big day, you’ll need to decide on your marriage contract. In South Africa, if you don’t sign an Antenuptial Contract (ANC) before you say your vows, you are automatically married In Community of Property (everything you own (and owe) is shared equally between you as a couple).
Most couples today opt for an ANC (with or without accrual) to keep their financial lives clear and protected.
I bring a legal background to the table, so feel free to chat to me about the essentials of your marriage contract. For complex contracts, I’ll always recommend you consult a lawyer to ensure everything is watertight.
It’s best to get the marriage contract out of the way early so you can tick it off your list and get back to the fun stuff, like cake tasting!

-Divorce decree or death certificate if previously married.
-Decision on your marital property regime (In Community of Property by default, or Out of Community with an Antenuptial Contract signed before the wedding).

Let me introduce myself...
I’m Janet Askew, Cape Town-based celebrant, trainer and facilitator, and lifelong connector of people and purpose.
I’ve spent my career designing learning experiences, writing, coaching, and developing leaders. As a business consultant and public speaker, I’ve helped organisations shift culture and strategy. As a volunteer marriage counsellor, I’ve walked alongside many couples preparing to commit to each other.
And because love also lives in the practical, I offer guidance on (ANC) Ante Nuptial Contracts, helping couples understand their options and make informed decisions about their future. With my legal background (LL.B), I bring clarity and simplicity to conversations that matter.
I’m a single mom to two lekker young adults, a widow, a hiker, a wine lover, and a woman who’s reinvented herself more times than I can count. I know what it means to love fiercely, lose deeply, and rise again with laughter and grace. That’s the energy I bring to your ceremony.
Let’s co-create a moment that matters. One that holds your story, your values, and your joy.
