Sometimes problems are just too overwhelming to handle on your own. The purpose of consulting a psychologist is to have someone who listens to you attentively. This does not mean that you are weak. Imagine blaming someone for going to a doctor to set a broken leg! The psychologist uses his/her knowledge of theory of personality, psychotherapy, and counselling to help you to improve your cognitive (or thinking) and emotional wellbeing. By collaborating with the psychologist, you may find solutions to your unique problems and circumstances. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
You may want to consult a psychologist to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of yourself and others. A deeper knowledge of yourself and how you interact with the world around you may increase understanding of your own behaviour. This knowledge and understanding (or insight) allows you to engage with your life, leading to fulfillment. HOPE AND OPTIMISM
Psychology, as a profession, is moving away from being concerned only about disorders and disease. When you consult a psychologist, he/she will also focus on what is right and what is currently working in your life. The psychologist works with you to find the best ways, based on scientific evidence, to increase your hope and optimism in your daily life - be it at work, in your social life, and in your love life. Psychology, like life, is really about finding what works best for you.
