We had an amazing interactive panel today with the Honorable Justice Jody Kollapen, Commissioner Advocate Shafie Ameermia, Justin Tyvoll of USAID, Ancella Ramjas who is the National Executive Director of Downs Syndrome South Africa, and Becca Tyvoll of Peace Catalyst International in the US. The conversation ranged from discussing human rights in the context of South Africa, other countries in Africa, Palestine, and around the world, with a special focus on rights for those with disabilities. Most of all, the speakers and audience participants emphasized the need to address the real issues facing people’s lives and our communities right now, and to go from focusing on our rights people, to understanding and acting upon our responsibilities to each other as fellow human beings. As Justice Kollapen put it, “We cannot rely on the governments to do this for us- we have to be the ones to enact human rights within our own communities. Many of you are already doing this without realizing it.”

Several important inputs were raised by participants and it was agreed to have more of these types of interactions.

The Pretoria Legacy Foundation today co-hosted this Human Rights Day event at the Rasooli Centre in Raslouw.

Our Founder and Director Saadia Gani was the host and emcee. Thank you, Saadia!

In his closing remarks, Ismail
Abramjee, spokesperson of the Pretoria Legacy Foundation hailed the success of the event.

Thank you to all that participated in today’s event!! We will share the recording soon!
