Understanding Superficial Parotidectomy 👩‍⚕️

The parotid gland is the largest salivary gland, located just in front of the ear. When a lump or tumour develops in this area, a procedure called a superficial parotidectomy may be recommended.

🔍 When is it needed?
• Benign (non-cancerous) tumours like pleomorphic adenomas
• Low-grade malignant (cancerous) tumours
• Persistent or growing lumps in the parotid gland
• Recurrent infections or suspicious masses requiring diagnosis

⚙️ What does the surgery involve?
The surgeon carefully removes the outer (superficial) part of the parotid gland while preserving the facial nerve, which controls facial movement.

⚠️ Why early treatment matters
Even benign tumours can grow larger over time and may become more complex to treat. Early evaluation helps ensure safer surgery and better outcomes.

💬 If you notice a painless swelling near your jaw or in front of your ear, don’t ignore it—get it checked.

🦷💊 Antibiotics & Your Teeth — What You Should Know
Antibiotics help fight infections… but did you know they can also affect your oral health?
Here’s what to look out for
▪️ Tooth discolouration (especially in children)
▪️ Weakened enamel
▪️ Dry mouth
▪️ Oral thrush (fungal infection)
Certain antibiotics, like Tetracycline can even cause permanent staining if taken while teeth are still developing.
🛡️ How to protect your smile:
* Only use antibiotics when prescribed
* Keep up with brushing & flossing
* Stay hydrated
* Support good bacteria (probiotics)
* Visit your dentist regularly

Your health matters, and so does your smile
If you notice changes in your teeth or mouth, don’t ignore it!

😴 Obstructive Sleep Apnea… Mouth Guard or Surgery?
You’ve been diagnosed, now what?
Mouth guard… or surgery?
🦷 Mouth Guard (Oral Appliance)
Best for mild to moderate cases
• Keeps your airway open
• Non-invasive
• Easy to use
🔧 Surgery
For moderate to severe cases
• Treats the underlying jaw/airway structure
• Long-term solution
• Improves breathing and sleep quality
💡 It’s not one-size-fits-all.
The right treatment depends on your airway and anatomy.
🦷 A proper assessment is key.

🚨 Head & Neck Cancer: Know the Risks
Head and neck cancers can affect the mouth, throat, and surrounding structures—and early awareness can save lives.
Key Risk Factors & Demographics:
• Gender: Men are affected nearly twice as often as women
• Age: Most commonly diagnosed between ages 56–60
• To***co & Alcohol: Leading causes, with smokers up to 15× more at risk
• HPV: Linked to over 70% of oropharyngeal (throat) cancers
These cancers often develop silently; early detection is critical.
🦷 If you notice persistent symptoms like lumps, sores, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained pain, don’t ignore them.

⚠️ Your Mouth May Be Trying to Tell You Something
STOP SURVIVING JAW PAIN OR DISCOMFORT!
It’s NOT “normal” - they are warning signals.
If you are experiencing:
• Ongoing tooth or jaw pain
• Bleeding when brushing or flossing
• Persistent bad breath
• Teeth that feel loose or shifting
• Sores that don’t heal within 2 weeks
• Clicking, locking, or tension in your jaw
These may be early indicators of periodontal disease, infection, impacted teeth, TMJ disorders, or oral pathology.
Many serious oral conditions develop gradually and quietly, until they become painful or complex to treat.
Early assessment by a Maxillofacial & Oral Surgeon can prevent long-term damage and more invasive procedures later.
