π THE 5 STAGES OF HEARING LOSS: WHERE ARE YOU? π
Think hearing loss is just "on" or "off"? It's actually a gradual journey through distinct stages.
π STAGE 1: MILD HEARING LOSS (26-40 dB)
People with mild hearing loss have difficulty hearing soft consonant sounds making words seem incomplete. Noisy environments make hearing more challenging.
β What you miss: Whispers, birds chirping, dripping taps
β Red flags: Asking "what?" frequently, turning up TV
π STAGE 2: MODERATE HEARING LOSS (41-55 dB)
You have a moderate hearing loss if sounds are closer to 50 dB before you hear them.
β What you miss: Normal conversation, phone calls
β Red flags: Avoiding social gatherings, reading lips
π STAGE 3: MODERATELY SEVERE HEARING LOSS (56-70 dB)
β What you miss: Most speech sounds, group conversations
β Red flags: Hearing aids become essential for daily life
π STAGE 4: SEVERE HEARING LOSS (71-90 dB)
Hearing loss at this level usually requires powerful hearing aids or implants to help you hear well.
β What you miss: Shouting, loud music, car horns
β Red flags: Complete reliance on visual cues
π STAGE 5: PROFOUND HEARING LOSS (91+ dB)
When you're in stage 4 (severe) or stage 5 (profound), you may notice that you rely on nonaural cues, like lip-reading, sign language, or a combination of methods, to communicate with others.
β What you miss: Almost all sounds
β Red flags: Only vibrations felt, not heard
β οΈ THE HARSH REALITY:
Degrees of hearing loss refer to the severity of the loss and are generally described as mild, moderate, severe, or profound. Hearing loss that borders between two categories is typically labeled as a combination of the two categories.
Each stage steals more of your world.
But here's the hope: Early intervention at ANY stage can prevent progression.
