Psychology on Social Media is becoming a much talked about topic online. As part of my MSc Clinical Psychology coursework I am undertaking research with an interest in psychologists who use Instagram as part of their professional practice.

If you are a psychologist on Instagram (or know of someone who is!), please consider participating in the study.

Overwhelming sadness….

That’s the only way I can describe how this past week in SA has left me feeling. Sadness for those who believed this was their only option…sadness for all those who will suffer in the aftermath…sadness for the businesses that now have to rebuild and some that won’t be able to…sadness for all the destruction…sadness for all those that lost their lives and for those who lost loved ones…

I know there’s resilience amongst the South African people, they prove this time and time again. But today I’m just sad and that’s ok too.

Tomorrow is another day.

As I sit putting the final touches to my first Masters application for this year I’m thinking ‘Please just let me get through paper applications’.

There’s so much more to me than what I can say in a few pages.

There are so many things that make this process challenging but one of the hardest for me is being rejected before I can share my whole story.

What have you found is the most difficult for you?

Our body and mind are so closely connected. Take care of yourselves and breathe 🧘‍♀️

I find it so incredible how our vagus nerve is so related to our mental calmness - the very best way to tap into this calm mental state is to slow down and deepen our breath, focusing on a long exhalation.

Simply put - when we are feeling stressed and anxious we are being driven predominantly by our sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight), to lower our stress response, calm our mental state and move into more of a state of relaxation we want to tap into our parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest).

We can look at deep, slow breathing as a magical way to flip that switch to lower our stress response.

Stimulating the vagus nerve has a really powerful effect on slowing the heart rate, and this specifically, is what relaxes us. The vagus nerve is basically listening to the way we breathe, and it sends the brain and the heart whatever message our breath indicates. Breathing slowly reduces the oxygen demands of the heart muscle and our heart rate in turn drops.

Put another way - your body senses your breathing and adapts its heart rate in response. So when we breathe slowly, the heart slows, and we relax. Conversely, when we breathe quickly, our heart speeds up, and we feel stressed or anxious.

Try it a couple of minutes a day 🫁
