Cervical cancer remains a large health burden and cause of death in South Africa. Partly due to high rates of HIV and HPV (Human Papilloma Virus - the organism implicated in cervical cancer) and partly due to improper primary screening protocols.

Papsmears (cervical cytology) are a gold-standard screening tool for Cervical cancer and can be performed by a General Practitioner. If need be, a patient will then be referred to a Gynaecologist for further management.
