What is Diabetic Retinopathy?
Diabetic Retinopathy is a condition that is brought about by diabetes which then affects the eyes. This is when high blood sugar levels cause damage to blood vessels in the retina.

These blood vessels can swell and leak, or they can close, stopping blood from
passing through. Sometimes abnormal new blood vessels grow on the retina.

The early symptoms of diabetic retinopathy can include but are not limited to:
• floaters
• blurriness
• dark areas of vision and
• difficulty perceiving colours
• having vision that changes sometimes from blurry to clear
• seeing blank or dark areas in your field of vision
• having poor night vision

All of these changes can adversely affect your vision. Controlling your blood sugar and blood pressure can stop vision loss.

NuEyes smart glasses may let you see better whilst wearing them due to their advanced image processing algorithms.

02/11/2021

Macular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a medical condition which may result in blurred or no vision in the centre of the visual field.
Early on there are often no symptoms. Over time, however, some people experience a gradual worsening of vision that may affect one or both eyes. While it does not result in complete blindness, loss of central vision can make it hard to recognise faces, drive, read, or perform other activities of daily life.
Because ordinary optical spectacles don't help, this has been the end of the road for most patients up till now. By using electronic computerised smart glasses called NuEyes, and by manipulating the parameters that govern vision, they allow many patients to see vastly better again and give them back some degree of normalcy after their vision loss.
Do you or someone you love have Macular degeneration?

NuEyes South Africa was born out of the exploration and investigation for a visual device that could potentially aid a low-vision patient after Sir Nicholas himself experienced visual problems caused by an unknown source.

For someone who had been a high definition vision optometrist for 40 years, it was a strange new world to venture into but an opportunity for Nicholas and Jeanne to set out to find a solution for him to be able to see again. After seeing (literally and figuratively) how well the NuEyes Pro electronic smart glasses worked for him, the process started of being able to be a distributor of NuEyes devices in South Africa.
As well as being able to possibly help other low-vision patients who had been told by ophthalmologists’ that there was nothing else that could be done for them. That is how the marriage of Sir Nicholas Rose Optometrist, NuEyes Smart Glasses South Africa and NuEyes USA came to be.

With the advent of NuEyes electronic smart glasses, patients with ocular pathology that might be legally blind with normal spectacles, are given a chance of seeing again.

They are essentially hands free wearable technology, with a camera and screens to manipulate images so that a patient is able to have improved vision.

The glasses use their built-in micro-computing power, together with their image processing algorithms to enhance vision.

Illumination, magnification, contrast, focus, exposure are all manipulated to enhance vision.

Conditions that can potentially be addressed:
• Macular Degeneration
• Diabetic Retinopathy
• Ocular Albinism
• Optic Atrophy
• Cone-Rod Dystrophy
• Forms of Glaucoma
• Stargardts Disease
• Optic Nerve Hypoplasia
• Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy
• Nystagmus
• Corneal Scarring
• Retinopathy of Prematurity
• Forms of Retinitis Pigmentosa
And other such conditions

Electronic smart glasses are head worn, hands free assistive devices that are capable, in many cases, of improving visual ability whilst being worn in conjunction with the refractive correction. Two styles are proving effective, the spectacles style and the virtual reality goggle style.

Their aim is to help the visually disabled patient to regain some measure of independence and enjoyment again.

Patients who have been told that they have reached the end of the road and spectacles, or surgery cannot help are the ones for which these glasses are recommended

Electronic spectacles were initially designed for the US Military at a staggering cost of 60 million US Dollars and 6 years of research. This Military grade device was one of the first sets of electronic spectacles to be customised for the low vision market.

In 2015 Edinburgh University published a comprehensive research study on using electronic computerised spectacles with image processing and visual enhancing algorithms for the legally blind.

The fact emerged that by manipulating various visual parameters, some subjects with 20/200 vision could see right down to 20/30 again.

The devices manipulate various criteria to improve the patient’s vision.

1. Illumination control of the electronic image. A constant and custom luminosity is possible.

2. Contrast adjustment. Colour saturation helps define objects and find edges more easily

3. Background inversion. The ability to change poorly contrasted letters on a similarly coloured background to white on black or black on white.

4. Magnification of up to 18X gives greater clarity of small detail. With electronic screens of up to 101 degrees field of view, written sentences are able to be magnified and still have 3-4 words visible at the same time promoting more fluent reading.

5. Autofocus. Being able to shift focus from far to near to far and having virtually instantaneous changes in focus provides the best opportunity for the Px to see clearly.

6. Auto exposure adjusting to your subject matter without being over or underexposed prevents silhouette vision and provides a constant opportunity for precise vision.

Corrected optical focus with supplementary spectacles to ensure that the electronically enhanced vision is at optimum focus are required

Conditions that can potentially be addressed:

• Macular Degeneration

• Diabetic Retinopathy

• Ocular Albinism

• Optic Atrophy

• Cone-Rod Dystrophy

• Forms of Glaucoma

• Stargardts Disease

• Optic Nerve Hypoplasia

• Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy

• Nystagmus

• Corneal Scarring

Technology is constantly evolving and improving… The future is truly here.

The first NuEyes device had been designed initially for the US Military. Six years of research and an astonishing R&D cost of > 60million US Dollars! NuEyes electronic spectacles were born when 2 military veterans realised that these augmented reality spectacles, which they had been using as soldiers in the field, could be adapted for low vision use.
