🌬️ Asthma at School: Triggers & Management 🏫💙

Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions in children, and flare-ups can happen unexpectedly, especially at school.

🔑 Common triggers in school settings:

🧪 Chalk dust & classroom dust
🐕 Pet dander (from class pets or clothing)
🌸 Pollen and outdoor allergens
🥶 Cold weather during break time or sports
🏃 Physical activity
😷 Respiratory infections
🚬 Exposure to smoke or strong perfumes

✅ Managing asthma at school:
⭕Ensure your child has an up-to-date Asthma Action Plan shared with teachers & the school nurse.
⭕Keep a reliever inhaler (asthavent, venteze) easily accessible at all times.
⭕Encourage regular handwashing to reduce infections.
⭕Teachers and students should be aware of early warning signs (coughing, wheezing, breathlessness).
⭕Allow the child to take breaks during sports or activities if needed.
⭕Work with the school to minimize environmental triggers

With the right awareness and support, children with asthma can thrive at school without being held back. 🌟

☀️ Managing Eczema Flare-Ups in Summer ☀️

Hot weather, sweat, and chlorine can all worsen eczema symptoms. Here are some practical tips to help keep flare-ups under control this summer:

✅ Moisturise often – Apply fragrance-free creams or ointments immediately after bathing or swimming.
✅ Choose cotton clothing – Loose, breathable fabrics reduce irritation and overheating.
✅ Shower after swimming – Rinse off chlorine or salt water promptly, then moisturise.
✅ Stay cool – Use fans, light bedding, and avoid prolonged heat exposure to minimise sweating (a common trigger).
✅ Avoid harsh soaps – Opt for gentle, fragrance-free cleansers.
✅ Protect from scratching – Keep nails short and use cold compresses to soothe itchy areas.

✨ Consistency with skin care and avoiding known triggers are key to preventing flare-ups. If your eczema worsens or doesn’t improve, consult your healthcare provider.

🩺 Let's Talk About Adenomyosis
A condition many women live with, often undiagnosed.

📍 What is Adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis occurs when the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows into the muscle wall of the uterus (myometrium), leading to an enlarged, tender uterus.

⚠️ Symptoms & Signs

Many patients may be asymptomatic, but common symptoms include:
🔸 Heavy or prolonged periods (menorrhagia)
🔸 Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)
🔸 Chronic pelvic pain or pressure
🔸 Pain during in*******se (dyspareunia)
🔸 Enlarged, tender uterus on pelvic exam

🔬 Investigations

🧪 Diagnosis can be tricky but includes:
✅ Pelvic Ultrasound – may show a bulky uterus or heterogeneous myometrium
✅ MRI – more specific in identifying adenomyotic changes
✅ Histology – definitive diagnosis is usually made after hysterectomy
Rule out other causes like fibroids, endometriosis, and malignancy.

💊 Treatment Options

Treatment depends on severity, age, and fertility goals:
🌿 Conservative (Medical)
– NSAIDs for pain
– Hormonal therapy (e.g., OCPs, progestins, GnRH analogues)
– Intrauterine contraceptive device (Mirena) for bleeding control

🏥 Surgical Options
– Hysterectomy is definitive for severe, refractory cases

If you're experiencing painful, heavy periods that interfere with life, talk to your doctor. Adenomyosis is treatable, and you don’t have to suffer in silence.

You're pregnant! Now what?

1. Notify Your Medical Aid ASAP
Most South African medical aids (Discovery, Bonitas, Momentum, etc.) require early notification for maternity benefits.

2. Register for the Maternity Programme
You must register your pregnancy via app, website, or by calling them.

Required info usually includes:
Estimated due date.
Member ID.
Doctor's details (GP or Gynaecologist).
First scan or confirmation of pregnancy.

Benefits typically include:
A set number of GP, gynaecologist, or midwife visits.
2-3 scans (depending on the scheme).
Basic blood tests.
Antenatal classes.
Baby bag (with nappies, samples, etc. — depends on the scheme).
Hospital cover for delivery (check network hospitals).

3. Check Waiting Periods and Plan Coverage
If you recently joined medical aid, there may be waiting periods for pregnancy benefits.
Ensure your hospital and doctor are on your plan's network to avoid co-payments.

4. Add the Baby to the Medical Aid
Once the baby is born, notify your scheme within 30 days to avoid penalties or gaps in cover.

You’ve just found out you're pregnant, here’s what to you need to do 🙌❤️

1. Confirm the Pregnancy
Do a blood test (Beta-hCG) to confirm the pregnancy. Your GP will give you a referral for the blood test.
You may have already done a home urine test; the blood test confirms hormone levels and dates the pregnancy more accurately.

2. Schedule Your First Medical Appointment
Visit a General Practitioner (GP) or clinic to:
Confirm the pregnancy.
Get a referral to an obstetrician or midwife.
Start your antenatal care.
Discuss medications (e.g., stop harmful meds, start folic acid, iron supplements).

3. Book Your First Ultrasound (Usually 6–9 Weeks)
This confirms:
Viability (heartbeat).
Location (rule out ectopic pregnancy).
Dating (gestational age).

4. Antenatal Care Schedule
You'll be advised to:
Attend regular antenatal visits:
Monthly up to 28 weeks.
Biweekly until 36 weeks.
Weekly until delivery.

Monitor blood pressure, urine tests, blood tests, and growth scans.

5. Lab Tests
First visit bloods: Full blood count, Rhesus factor, HIV, syphilis, rubella, hepatitis B, blood sugar.

Urinalysis for protein and infection.

Later: Glucose tolerance test (around 24–28 weeks) for gestational diabetes.

Influenza: Symptoms, Signs, and Treatment

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness that occurs seasonally, typically during the colder months from May to August. The flu is caused by influenza viruses and spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. It can affect people of all ages but tends to have more severe consequences for the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses or weakened immune systems.

The most common symptoms of influenza include a sudden onset of fever, chills, body aches, fatigue, sore throat, dry cough, and headache. Some people may also experience nasal congestion, sneezing, and gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea or diarrhea, though these are more common in children. Unlike the common cold, which develops gradually, flu symptoms tend to appear abruptly and are often more intense.

Early recognition of flu symptoms is important, especially for vulnerable groups. Flu can lead to complications such as pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections, and worsening of chronic conditions like asthma or diabetes. Therefore, prompt treatment and preventive measures are vital during flu season.

Treatment typically involves rest, staying hydrated, and using over-the-counter medications to manage symptoms such as fever and aches. In some cases, doctors may prescribe antiviral medications, which are most effective when started within 48 hours of symptom onset. Annual influenza vaccination is strongly recommended, particularly for high-risk individuals, and is available through clinics and pharmacies across the country. Maintaining good hygiene practices—like frequent handwashing and covering coughs—also helps prevent the spread of the virus.
