Benefits of Physiotherapy

There are many benefits associated with physiotherapy:

•You can return to doing activities you enjoy that you've stopped because of an injury, pain or surgery.
•You may prevent future pain and injury.
•You may be able to avoid surgery and the use of prescription medication. This includes addictive opioid meds.
•Your physical function, or movement, improves.
•Your ability to move more freely helps you to maintain independence, such as not having to seek help from others when you're standing or walking.

What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a treatment that helps you improve how your body performs physical movements. It can be part of a generalized pain management plan or a specific treatment for an injury or health condition. It’s common to need physiotherapy after many types of surgery, too. You might also need physiotherapy to help prevent injuries before they happen.
How long you’ll need physiotherapy depends on which injuries or health conditions you have and which area of your body needs help moving better. Some people only need a few weeks of physiotherapy to help with a short-term issue. Others need it for months or years to manage symptoms of a chronic (long-term) condition.

What does Physiotherapy treat?

Most people start physiotherapy after a healthcare provider diagnoses an injury or condition. Examples include:

Respiratory conditions.
Pre and post operative.
Sports injuries.
Neck pain.
Back pain.
Knee pain.
Hip pain.
Carpal tunnel syndrome.
Tendinopathy (including tendinitis).
Rotator cuff tears.
Knee ligament injuries (like ACL tears).
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
Concussions.
Strokes.
Spinal cord injuries.

Is Physiotherapy worth it?

It might not be easy (especially at first), but physiotherapy is definitely worth it. You might feel stressed, tired or exhausted after a physiotherapy session. These feelings are valid and normal. Your physiotherapist will help you set realistic goals and expectations.
Your strength, flexibility and mobility will improve over time. You might feel like physiotherapy isn’t working right away. But persevere, it is absolutely worth the time and effort!

Looking forward to meeting you!

How physiotherapy has shaped medical history

Physiotherapy is an age-old practice using physical techniques for patients' ailments, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. It helps to restore movement and function when somebody is affected by injury, illness, or disability. As a healthcare profession, physiotherapy has its roots in the 18th century, though history records early civilizations employing a variety of physical therapies for a number of disorders.

In the modern age, physiotherapy embraces a vast range of techniques designed to address conditions associated with different systems of the body.

Seeing that physiotherapy originated in the 18th century, just imagine how Liebel Physiotherapists can help you manage respiratory problems, pain, injury, illness and disabilities etc… in the 21st century!

PHYSIOTHERAPY FOR BABIES & CHILDREN WITH RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS DURING WINTER

Babies and children are prone to respiratory infections, especially in winter.
It is important to take note of the warning signs in children when immediate medical attention is required. These include continuous high-grade fevers, severe hoarseness and tightness of the chest, excessive coughing, lethargy, not eating/drinking and shortness of breath (fast and shallow breathing).
Inflammation and infection of the nasal passages, airways and lungs causes excess mucus secretions and spasms, and these conditions can be alleviated by respiratory physiotherapy.
Therapy includes nebulization, chest physiotherapy, naso-pharyngeal and therapeutic breathing exercises.
Nebulization is done with either saline to loosen and reduce the thickness and stickiness of mucus secretions or with prescribed corticosteroid or broncho-dilating medication to relax the airways and decrease inflammation. Chest physiotherapy techniques can help to drain various areas of the lungs with hands-on techniques, while therapeutic breathing exercises and techniques can assist in mobilising mucus secretions, improve breathing patterns, and optimise lung function.
Cough-reflex stimulation with manual airway clearance techniques is used to treat toddlers and young children (16 months and up), while babies (0-16 months) and children with neurological disorders (who often have weak breathing muscles and poor cough reflexes) can be treated with sterile naso-pharyngeal suctioning to remove mobilized lower airway and upper respiratory mucus secretions.
Physiotherapists are trained professionals and first-line practitioners, which means that you do not have to be referred by a doctor to make an appointment with a physiotherapist. Physiotherapists can play an important role in supporting and educating parents on dealing with children with respiratory problems.
Please make an appointment with us at 012 653 5115 for any respiratory issues this coming winter.

Liebel Physiotherapists wish all our patients a happy, healthy and prosperous 2025!

A New Year is a time to reflect on what makes life meaningful and a healthy pain free body is always on top of our lists.

If you’re recovering from surgery or managing a painful chronic condition or injury, physiotherapy plays an essential role in rehabilitation and pain relief. Our physiotherapists can help you regain strength, mobility, and function, getting you back to your daily activities and routines.

By assessing your current physical condition, our physiotherapists can identify any underlying issues, such as poor posture, muscle imbalances, or lingering injuries, that could affect your body’s healing process.

It’s always beneficial to address any issues as soon as possible, before they turn into bigger problems that could hinder healing processes.

Make 2025 your meaningful year.

Physiotherapy can help before and after surgeries

Most of us realize that physical therapy is an important part of recovery from surgery, but it also often helps to have this therapy before surgery. Physical therapy on the musculoskeletal system done before going into surgery is beneficial.

It helps relax muscles and ease tension, which is helpful when muscles and joints are to be operated on. Post-surgical physical therapy helps the body recover and heal.
